2 yrs ago, I was restocking my canned food. I came across 3 cans of clams, expired 2012. I was ready to chuck them in the trash can but I was curious about how the clams held up , 12 yr old clams…. Here's a tip: if you have a choice between a regular can and a quick open flip-top can, choose the regular can. The seal is better and they have a longer shelf life. I recently opened a can of beans and found dark spots inside. The can was not dented or compromised in any way, stored properly and not expired. I contacted the company (with photos) and they immediately replied. DO NOT EAT. THAT IS MOLD. I had purchased a case of these beans, so they all got dumped, and company sent a refund check. This is not something you want to experience in a grid down situation. Judging by the company's swift response, this is not that uncommon.

Also, those pop tops, can easily open just a little when stacked and moved...... just be careful. Food poisoning can kill. Back in the 1990's I actually called Del Monte foods here in the USA to ask about how their expiration dates and best by dates worked. She was very nice and answered all my questions. She said simply put, they both mean the same thing, but people were looking at "EXPIRATION" as being past the date of being safe to eat, and they were throwing out perfectly good food and wasting millions of pounds of food every year. So, they changed it to "BEST BY" date. She said we have regulations by the FDA that say the label has to be within 2% of food and nutritional value from the label to what is in the can. She said so we have to take into account the fact that people are storing cans in their kitchen where the temps vary when cooking and not cooking and that effects the food in the can over time, and that time becomes the BEST BY DATE. So if you buy a can and the best by date is two years from the date of purchased, that means in two years you have lost "ABOUT" 2% of the food value, from what the label says, and worse case scenario you continue on a 2% per year loss of food value, BUT if you store the can in a cool place like a basement, she said that date can be many YEARS further into the future, but they always go by worse case scenario. She said as long as the can isn't bulging or you have liquid squirting out when opened or a bad smell, the food is safe to eat. She said the only foods that you should eat within reason after the best by date, are cans with acidic foods like tomatoes, pineapples and things like that, because while they're still fine, they can tend to start having an off taste to them.

For general information, I've been hearing about "when SHTF" since 1961 (Cuban Missile Crisis). 63 years later it still gets tossed around. Back in the day folks were stocking food and building bomb shelters. A lot of money was wasted. These days everybody's still talking about bugging out when SHTF.

In fact my go to meats are some of the ones you stay away from (I’ll trade when TSHTF) I’m actually on prescription sodium nitrates because they work different in me. Super Beats heart chees have a different nitrate = do not mix with visgra ☠️ except for me Dr said I’m built different. Only thing I will say for LTS is stay away from pull tab or ribbon roller open keys = swak spot. Get old school cans and use a can opener.

This is one of the best overview on canned meats I have seen. It covers all the high points. Sure prepper meats is not as exciting as a photo spread on RIB EYE or PORTER HOUSE, YUM, we have never had a love with canned fish. Fresh salmon or faux crab seem to be it for us. And since I live on a major trout river in Tennessee I should do more fishing, foil wrapped trout and a little lemon salt is my favorite fresh fish, but it’s not a HighSierra trout stream where you can catch your fill of trout getting them to hit on a salmon egg. Most of my good back packing gear is at the California property. Erik, Thank You

I like the Tuna can-sized cans of chicken meat. I'll add one to a bag of Chicken Ramen. The larger roast beef cans work good too. There's enough there to add to two seperate bags of Beef Ramen. If you also stockpile chicken and beef bullion, and plenty of pasta, you can even make your own ramen from scratch (the best feature of store-bought ramen is that it's pre-cooked). Corned beef is good when you add in your own garden-grown diced potatoes and other things to make real corned beef hash. For fish I like those little cans of herring. I've loved those since the old KMart days. My favorite place to buy this stuff is Bi-Mart. It's a department store for Survivalists.
