A lot of people are still new to owning a fully electric vehicle and many just aren’t familiar with them. With that comes the charging habits for your Tesla. Tesla’s batteries are designed and built much different than the batteries used in most consumer electronics. The engineering and R&D that goes into Tesla batteries is second to none. In this video, I outline the top 7 things you can do to minimize battery degradation for your EV and what the best charging practices are.

I ordered my Model 3 last month. I cannot wait to get it. I am not able to charge everyday though. The Apartment Complex I live does have a Tesla Super Change Station though. The Mall down the street has free charging machines that are a lower voltage so it takes a long time to charge. I used to charge my BMW there, and would see many Tesla owners.

What amp should I set my NEMA 14-50 mobile connector?
@lawrencenovak5203
@lawrencenovak5203 2 жыл бұрын
Wiring and charge rate (amps) - check with your local building code. Generally: 1) an EV system should be on a dedicated circuit (have its own breaker) and not shared with a dryer, 2) wiring and breakers are rated for a certain maximum amperage and voltage, and an "80% rule" applies to continuous loads for safety. That means a 50 amp circuit breaker can safely sustain a continuous load of 40 amps, a 15-amp circuit can sustain 12 amps. Always check with your local building code.
@markm0000

Yeah that goes right out the window when the power cable on the street isn’t rated for half the breakers in your house.
@ryanmiller4096
@ryanmiller4096 7 ай бұрын
Tesla chargers automatically limit to 80% of breaker. Obviously sharing a breaker isn't optimal but it works. Most houses are 100 amps anyhow. Breakers are already shared in theory. I believe this guy has a sub box on dryer so he is absolutely ok.

I supercharge the car about every 3 - 4 days when it drops down to 30%. Would it be okay to charge up to 90% or 100% this often?

I superchargered twice and the first time It wasn’t preconditioned and the second time it was preconditioned and the charge times were about the same. The weather was around 59 degrees both days. Maybe, I would see an improvement when it’s colder or on faster superchargers? One tip for faster charging to not to share a charger with someone. For whatever reason, a lady parked next to me and charged. I saw my times increase and charge rate lowered. There were plenty of chargers available. Maybe, she felt safer parked next to someone.

Hey Matt, thanks for the helpful video. At first, I used to charge my Model Y up to 90% every day using the wall charger, just like the User Manual suggested. However, after about a month, I noticed that my battery had lost more than 3% of its capacity. I talked to the Tesla mechanics about it, and they recommended that I should only charge it when it goes below 20%. So, I started following their advice. In just five months and less than 4,000 miles, my battery degraded to 6%. Do you have any suggestions on how to prevent further degradation? By the way, I recently switched to using a 110V mobile connector since yesterday. Any thoughts on that?"
@sm753

From what I've read - that seems normal. In general, you expect to see about 5%-10% degradation in the first year. But after that, *significantly* less.

Model Y performance- I only drive it on weekends, and typically for short stints around town. The battery has never seen anything below 60% SOC (probably because I’ve only had it for two weeks) I leave it plugged nightly during the week with charge limit set to 90%. What are the charging recommendations for this scenario? Or am I already adhering to best practicce? HELP
@ANDYANDREWPro
@ANDYANDREWPro 29 күн бұрын
Based upon my research, the state of charge should be below 80%. But, the closer to 50% you are the better. Leave it sitting at 55 to 65%. And charge it up to 80% when you are ready to use 8:32 it. I only charge 70% at home in the morning just before I leave. Depending what I do, I will come home with anywhere between 40 to 60% left of the battery. I plug it in and program it the charge up the next morning over and over again. It is perfectly fine to run it down to 5% or charge it up to 95%. But it should not sit for extended periods of time at those percentages. The battery enjoys the state of charge closer to 50 for the duration. -MYP

I live in a condo. Daily 'at home' charing is not available. Internet is also not available. Personally, I don't like (feel left out?) the most common advice everywhere is 'charge at home'. I think more and more multi-family unit owners are/will become Tesla owners. I'm grateful the charging grid is expanding!
@michaelsmithers4900
@michaelsmithers4900 Жыл бұрын
I have a friend who lives in a condo with the same situation. No plugs at the parking spaces. It’s going to take some work to make that happen. One thing I recommended to him was, if running 220 all over the parking areas is to expensive they could consider 110v. 110 is far cheaper to run could be decimal points difference compared to 220v. Think thinner wires, more circuits on the same supply. The tradeoff of course is that 110v charging is abysmally slow. But if you’re plugged in for 12+ hours/day and you’re commute is less than 60mi round trip(common in the us) then you could do the majority of your charging this way and greatly reduce your reliance on superchargers.
@michaelsmithers4900
@michaelsmithers4900 Жыл бұрын
Another avenue may be to look into destination chargers tesla and non tesla. Tesla has and email address on their website under charging. I think you’re condo can make some money off these and this might be an incentive for them. It would definitely make the condos more attractive as many EV owners won’t buy in a condo or would buy in a condo if there was good charging👌

Just charge every day at the end of your commute. You can schedule for it to start charging at a specific time so you can take advantage of off peak charging rates. You can also set a charge limit as well.

I'm thinking of buying a Tesla Y, it would be stored in the summer months (June thru September) in a garage in Tucson AZ. Should the battery be on a charger at low amperage the whole time or does it make more sense to have a timer allow charging for a set period of time. How does the car setting for this length of time affect the battery life?
@carljaekle
@carljaekle Жыл бұрын
Leave it plugged in, but set the maximum charge level low, like 50-60%. You could lower amperage of charge if you wish, but it should need very little charging on a daily basis. If you don't leave it plugged in you may end up with a zero SOC, which as stated is bad for the battery. Make sure sentry mode is off, and I would also turn off cabin overheat protection, assuming the car is in the shade in a garage. Check the car occasionally on the phone app just to confirm all is well.

I have a Tesla wall charger at home and usually charge at lower amps (8-12) unless absolutely necessary! liked the tips, Usually it is normal for Tesla's to have about 10% degradation...Charging between 60% and 75% is a also a sweet spot however, this is practical only if you drive distances between thekms for that range. I am trying to get more range its cold in Canada and I used to have the car preconditiion for departure at 8.00am however I lost about 20 kms (degradation) in 2020-2021 I was at 7% before this!......any tips to bring it back to 95-97%? This is a 2019 and came with 386 kms but now is at 347..

Try charging to 100% and then driving immediately and getting the battery down low (maybe 10%ish) this will help recalibrate battery management system. If you’re charging to 70% or 80% nearly all the time, the BMS will “think” that’s the max capacity of your battery

Is there a technical reason to not charge at higher amps at home? 32Amps seem like pretty low when talking about a car that can fast charge to 250+KW(around 400+amps). Level 2 charger is limited to 48amps on most Teslas now via its onboard charger, I mean I agree that most of the time you don’t need to charge at 48amps, but is charging at lower amps really technically better for battery health? I’m really curious about this, I think your house electrical system might benefits more from it? 🤔
@carljaekle
@carljaekle Жыл бұрын
As was stated in the video, some of this is degradation, and some of this is your particular driving style. I leave mine on percent instead of miles and don't worry about it. Avoid Supercharging unless necessary. And don't charge over 80% unless you really need the range. Both points made by the presenter.

I think you mean NEMA 6-50 for EV charging. NEMA 14-50 is for an oven or an RV that requires a Neutral conductor. EV charging uses only two “hot” conductors and a ground. Thus, NEMA 6-50 is the proper outlet.
@Got2BNoel
@Got2BNoel 2 жыл бұрын
Either or works, the only difference is the ground and neutral. “Proper” outlet is subjective and it depends on the situation for the individual. You want to power an RV, or appliance or charge your EV then 14-50. You want an EV charger only 6-50 or even better just get an actual EV charger not a outlet.

@@club3g82 the battery cells have a voltage below which they become damaged. the CAR when it says 0% is a little bit above that, to help prevent this scenario. So yes it is fine to drive to 0% as long as you charge back up relatively soon. How soon? I don't know, probably a couple of days would be fine but I wouldn't risk that. The longer it sits the more chance of dropping below that critical *actual* minimal cell voltage.
