The reason the wages are so low are the combination of the popularity of the GAA and the fact people sit at home instead of getting involved at a local level and the FAI don't put much effort into the league. Its a constant struggle for fans and stay afloat so maybe consider this before joking about pub leagues etc. I've been watching LOI football and Irish League (Northern Irish league) all my life and their is nothing better than supporting your local side.

Ross Currie Agree. Im from Finland and there is a bit of a same problem. Majority of fans whore out to teams in Prem, Laliga or Bundesliga. Attendaces average at 5000 a game, although Helsinki derby is a sold out always meaning 10 000 fans. Top earnear gets 120k a year, meanin about 3k a week. It annoys me so much when people dismiss other leagues as pub leagues. There is no better than supporting the local side, and even though the fanbases of these club arent big, they are so much more passionate than these people being fans of teams 5000 miles away.

Completely agree, nothing beats being at a real game and the people who go to these games are real fans and the passion is real. I have been living Galway and supporting the local team. We got relegated last season and the ground was heart breaking as we were crying for the club.

I absolutely hate the way the LOI is treated by the FAI in terms of investment and prize money. However due to the low wages I actually feel that the players play better because either a) they want to climb up the football ladder and have to prove that they’re good players or b) they play for a team because they genuinely have a passion to play for them

The FAI don't have any spending money because they spent far too much on the vastly inflated salaries of Trap. ONeill and now Mick Mac and their management teams!! And still they can't qualify for the world cup!! Fans need to support their clubs in their Tens of thousands not waste their cash on Liverpool Man City Man U Arsenal Spurs Celtic and various other overseas teams!! Aviva should be full for all the Dublin derby matches involving Shamrocks, Shelburne Bohemians and St Patrick's Athletic plus Cork City should fill 40,000 and play at Pairc Hi Chaoimh and Limerick fc should sellout the 26,000 Thomond Park for every game!! The FAI can't force people to watch League of Ireland and they can't stop the top league of Ireland clubs selling their best players overseas or indeed letting their best players leave on a free transfer!!

None of them , I'm a Dundalk fan(Who you got Horgan and Boyle from) and 1. This list is very bad , Dundalk would have a good few more players on more than 2k in this list and 2. The players in this are all bang average or ageing like O'Donnell and Finn. The most realistic player you might sign here is Graham Burke as he's been on fire to be honest and players not on this list you might be looking at Daniel Cleary from Dundalk , he's a great CB we only signed him in February and he's pure class only 22 years old.

You would think the same in the United States too, but it's not the case. Just as with rugby being much more popular than association football in Ireland, same in the U.S. with American football vs association football. Yes, indeed there are some high wages in the MLS, but the quality of football is much lower than our European counterparts. MLS is like the retirement home for former European and South American greats like Beckham, Rooney, and way back in the NPSL days, Pele. They have alot of cash to throw around because they have big investors, but nobody young and promising wants to play here. Look at the likes of of Donovan, Howard, Pulisic, some of the all time greatest American players, who played/play in England. MLS is at best equivalent to a second tier European league, and even at that their best teams would probably do well to even finish mid table in a league like the EFL championship.
