Old Boy is one of those movies that does the “1 vs. 100” extremely well. Showing the hero physically exhausted after just a few seconds of fighting but still pushing through the horde of bad guys. The back and forth of each party getting the upper hand on each other. Until the point where each side is literally just tired and throwing stuff at each other. It’s just awesome. That movie is awesome.

It's logical that the first script idea you think of is cliché, because other filmmakers probably also thought of that idea first, so it gets overused. The problem is you mostly don't realise it's a cliché until it is too late. For example, I just realised the first two clichés mentioned, are in some way in my shortfilm from last year 😬

I'm surprised you didn't use "No cell service". Although, it's one I'm definitely guilty of overusing because of the ubiquity of cell phones and the question "why can't they just call the cops?"

Add to that ' no battery' - way more realistic, because people do tend to forget to recharge in time. And if then there's no access to a charger...

My favorite part of the “enhance” cliche is that it’s always said by the boss person. It’s said as a good idea, something that the silly tech wizard was not thinking of doing. “Oh wow, enhance? Why didn’t I think of that?”

The "English please!" cliche is one that I've not had much trouble with when writing, but now after what you said about using cliches and turning them on themselves, I think I have an idea of how to incorporate it into the international film I'm making: Instead of somebody speaking English with technical terms and somebody else saying "Speak English" as in "Dumb it down for me", instead it'll be someone literally speaking in another language and somebody else saying "Speak English" as in "I genuinely don't understand what you're saying, I don't speak that language". XD

For me there are clichés that have become very annoying these days because of the frequent repetition 1- A person in the subway or train kills all criminals 2- A man who hits or kills a whole team of people and they attack him one by one instead of a group 3- An unhandsome and foolish man gets a wonderful girl that everyone wants 4- When the hero falls under the threat of a weapon from the main villain and can kill him easily the main villain starts talking about several things while another person sneaks behind him to distract him to make the hero kill him while the main villain had the opportunity to kill him all the time 5- That there should be a boy from the age of 13 to 15 who is capable of hacking and can access confidential information quite easily, and yet he is in high school!!! 6- The hero is subjected to fatal blows that no one can bear, yet the main villain who is not injured by any scratch is killed with ease. 7- The main villain can't fight like the hero and doesn't know martial arts like kung fu or any sport, yet threatens the hero throughout the movie and in the end fails to fight I mean why doesn't the main villain know a sport or some moves to takedown or end the a hero ! 8- The bully boy who teases and insults the shy hero of the movie all the time and then the best girl in school loves him, whom the bully wanted for himself and then either the hero kills him or becomes his friend and this is rare 9- That the genius is a shy and eccentric person and is always killed in the last half of the movie 10- When a place is bombed nothing happens and then suddenly after a moment of silence the place explodes and then everyone looks at the person carrying the detonator and says something silly as usual 11- That rain, thunder and lightning begin to fall at the moment of fighting with the main villain 12 - the villain must be Russian and the hero is American

Some of the clichés,like the 100 to 1 or the car won't start are almost unavoidable because they are too central to storytelling in my opinion, many of the other can become annoyingly predictable which leads to the question why wasn't ,the walk in slow motion , walk cool and trip or the superheroes just posing then rushing to battle not on the list, these definitely deserve a spot on the list.

"Enhance" is definitely the worse cliché especially and often used in tv-series, I always thought that it is complete nonesense and have seen it way to often. But as you said it definitely is getting more realistic with ai upscaling etc. that is already possible, even tho not in the way that it is shown in the movies. I can also think of the clichés "timers run out but can be stopped in last second" or "loading screens that finish just in time". EDIT: And also: "person is nearly getting shot by bad person, you hear the gunshot and then its the good guy who came in the last moment to shoot the bad guy" (also often seen this with a knive/sword/... instead of a gun)

The biggest movie cliche is a female character's personality based on their hair colour. With blondes being slutty or dumb, black hair for villains/bad girls, brunettes are dependable/girl next door and redheads are smart/nerdy. Another is that every smart character will have a Rubik's Cube on their desk or use one , because only smart people can memorize an algorithm?

I think Back to the Future gets a pass on the car not starting because the entire premise of the film is built around it, it's an annoying cliche when its just a throw away moment to create some uninspired suspense. A few really basic cliches that I thought of, which are more common in amateur films, but equally frustrating when they're in big budget films: 1. Leaving the door unlocked or totally open on a car or into a room - sometimes not even in a horror film, but just a basic drama where any normal person would do it. 2. Scenes/films opening with an alarm clock going off. This screams student film and despite seeming pretty harmless, it's just so uninspired. 3. Characters hanging up the phone without saying goodbye. Certain circumstances this is fine, and I get not wanting to waste screen time, but its literally a one word exchange to make it feel less like a movie scene. 4. Characters falling over when they're being chased - come up with a unique way for the villain to catch up with the protagonist. 5. More of a character/plot structure issue - but characters constantly making stupid decisions simply because the plot needs to move in the direction the writer wants (literally every episode of ObiWan Kenobi). Have plot naturally unfold based on decisions the characters make, not the other way around.
