Let other people have cats and dogs! Jungle Bob is here to show you that owning a pet reptile or amphibian is not as complicated as you might think. In this video, he shares seven tips about caring for a leopard gecko.
An extremely popular lizard pet these days is the Leopard Gecko. They come in such a wide variety of colors right now. The ones way back when were always just yellow with black spots, but now we get a variety of different color patterns, eye colorations, pupil types, all different types that I won't bore you with here today.
But this is what I really want to stress with these is their calm nature and this is a great beginner lizard because it just stays in a very small enclosure. A 10-gallon tank is more than sufficient for its whole life. And it's a meal worm and cricket eater. It doesn't like greens, it doesn't like meat, it just wants to eat its insects. It's a hygienic little animal in captivity in that when it defecates, it tends to do it in one corner. It almost makes a toilet area. So, that pleases a lot of the owners. In terms of cleaning up after it, it's very simple.
Simple sand on the bottom, a pretty strong heat lamp on the top. They are more of a nocturnal creature so they'll stay inside of a hide spot. And if there's one mistake people make with these all the time it's keeping them too hot. They are an animal that comes from a hot area of the planet, no doubt about it. But they do not lay in a lounge chair and try to bask in the sun. They get out of that sun as fast as they can. And they do that by going underground.
So, to keep them happy and healthy, you have to give them, not only a hide spot, but you have to humidify it. What we use usually is clumped up moss. We run it under the faucet and make it very wet, stuff the moss inside of a hide spot, and that's where the burrow where the animal will stay most of the time. At night is when he comes out and forages, so we put usually a red light over his tank. So, if you own him, you can watch him eat at night. The red light not bothering a reptile. Hopefully, it doesn't bother you. But he can't see the red light. He can see the prey, he can sense where it is, and he eats. And you can enjoy the Leopard Gecko at night.
So, this is really an extremely popular animal, totally, totally captive bred. You do not see any imported ones ever because they're prolific breeders, that's for sure. The Leopard Gecko has also got one of the softest underbellies of anything I've ever felt. A female gecko, if it was to be a pregnant one or a gravid one, as we say in the reptile business, you would actually see the eggs. It's almost a transparent stomach. So very easy animal to keep and one I would highly recommend, the Leopard Gecko.

Can you fact check that or do you just assume "Dessert animal = Sad", because they don't live on sand. They live in hard packed dirt plains, and craggy rock heaps which they can hide in. They do NOT live on sand.

You can use sand, if you soak it, and let it dry untill it is one big hard piece of floor, like in their natural enviroment. Not the loose playsand some use.

i've kept them for 1. I'm Glad your animal is healthy but just because you happen to be lucky doesn't mean you are right. Its like getting bit by a rattle snake to see if you'll live without help and if you did going around saying its safe. Besides where you just too lazy to read cases of it happening and seeing the type of habitat they actually are thriving in? please don't go giving false information to ignorant people that would believe you.

Omg I'm definitely NOT subscribing! 1) Heat lamp? No way, you're supposed to have a heat map because leopard geckos take in heat through their bellies. It also can damage their eyes which is a BIG reason not to have them. Also when you said to get a night heat lamp so you can enjoy them late at night I was so mad, why would you say that? "So you can enjoy them at night" what a HORRIBLE thing to say. You're supposed to have an animal to love and care for them, not for entertainment! 2) Sand for a substrate! Seriously? That is so dumb to say that, there are probably some beginners out there who watched this and think sand is ok. When the gecko is eating the bugs will crawl/hop around the tank so when your gecko is eating them he'll/she'll will get a mouth of sand. And it gets in their eyes which is just as worse as a mouth of sand. This is NOT what you should do, EVER! Please don't listen to this dumb guy.

I'm in agreement with Eddie, for a lot of the more easy going reptiles like ball pythons and leopard geckos, sand or other kinds of substrate isn't necessarily the best thing for them, especially when they are small. newspaper and a heating pad will do just fine. hell, most people don't even put em in a tank, a tub will suit them just fine.

I know it’s been like 6 years since this video came out but, 1) 10 gallons is not sufficient, Adults need at least 20 gallons 2) NO SAND 3) they need under the tank heaters, not heat lamps. If you need more heat use a ceramic heat emitter, they do not give off light so they won’t damage your Leo’s eyes

@kabe1498
@kabe1498 8 жыл бұрын
+XxBeautyNerdsxX first, your gecko understand what you are saying, if it's pupils just got bigger because it is adjusting to the light. And if your gecko licks your finger when you put your hand in its tank that just means that it is trying to clean its nose or it is feeling its surroundings. And you should feed your gecko once every two days, it with calcium powder. And put a small bottle cap of calcium powder without D3 in its tank for extra calcium that his body needs. hope I helped.

Leopard geckos are nocturnal and spend all day hiding from the sun so a bulb beating on them all the time is really stressful and it can burn out their corneas. Also dont use loose substrate it will get eaton in small amounts and over time it will build up in the geckos stomach causing a condition called impaction this is extremely deadly for leopard geckos. You can however keep you gdcko on tile, reptile carpet, and even paper towel. With the lighting issue because leopard geckos dont get vitamins from sunlight/uvb light there diet needs to be supplemented with pure calcium, and a multi vitamin powder containing vitamin d3. This is not all the information of corse so do a ton of research and find out what your animal needs to stay happy and healthy.

I approve of people keeping leopard geckos as pets mainly because they, as well as bearded dragons, American corn snakes, and red-slider turtles, are getting close to being fully domesticated. In fact, research shows that there have been some significant changes in modifications of these creatures in captivity. And this is probably how all domesticated animals started off as; wild animals that have some changes in their modifications while being raised and selectively bred by humans in captivity.

As someone who’s had plenty of experience with geckos and other lizards. Heat lamp is fine as long as you don’t intent to have a heat pad. Still leaving the lamp on one side of the tank. The side you intent to be hotter leaving your two hides on that side. A nice normal hide (normal a flat top to sun bathe) and a humidity hide. ( I use poster towels and a container) hidden away from the light and I burry my so it’s like a little borrow. And one other on the cool side ofcorce. Red lamps are fine as well. If you decide to use a heat pad don’t use a heat lamp. Any LED lamp will do as long as there is no heat. Or a LED red light. If you have your tank near a window or natural lighting a heat pad by its self will do.

Please do not listen to this guys advice. No sand, no sand at all. Doesn’t matter what sand, no sand. You do not need a heat lamp, and if you want one, don’t over do it and only have a seven watt heat Matt. A 10 gallon tank is actually pretty small for a leopard gecko, if you want them to be happy I would definitely get a 20 gallon for an adult

I'm a Leopard-Gecko breeder since sme Years. I agree that Leopard-geckos are really gently, and they can become hand-tame if u like. Make them some caves with humid moss where they can sleep during the day and shade is also very important. BUT. I don't agree with those points: 1. A 10 Gallon Tank is sufficient??? ARE YOU SERIOUS??? 2 or 3 Geckos (never hold them alone!) need a Tank in minimum 1m20 x 50cm x 50cm! 10 Gallons are sufficient for the Winter Calm-Down! 2. Red Heating Light? Do you like your Geckos blind??? Heating Lamps are inefficient and dangerous. Use a dull blue or white LED-Light instead. 3. Use Heatsones instead of Heat-Mats or Heat-Lamps. Leopard Geckos in wildlife take the Heat from heatened stones. A Heat-Mat heats the whole Terrarium. This isn't needed, bcs they need Temperatures between 23 and 30 degrees (nearly room-temperature), and in the caves nearly room-temperature of 20°C. 4. DON'T USE PURE SAND as substrate!!! They will become constipated, wich is harmful to they'r life! Use instead a substrate - mixture of 1 part sand and 4 parts loam. Leopard Geckos can digest loam but not sand! With this mixture, if they eat some substrate while hunting a crick, they can digest the loam with in. And a big point, that you didn't told: THEY DON'T NEED UV-LIGHT! It's a real big missunderstanding. In all Leopard Gecko Forums there is a real battle against or for UV - Light... THEY DON'T NEED UV. If you like, do it. But they don't need it! Don't waste your bucks into an expensive, Metal-Halide UV-Lamp! Use normal LED-Spots. Those are more efficient. Also forget the special Energy-Saving UV-Lamps. The needed UV-B radiation wont reach the bottom of the Terrarium. Leopard-Geckos sleeping all the day in they'r caves. They hadn't no touch with UV-Light in wildlife. So they can't produce the important Vitamin D3, who prevents from Rachitis. Powder the food (mostly Cricks, not only mealworms) with an additional Vitamin-Mixture with Calcium and they'r fine. I never had problems with my set-up, and I'm breeding sucessfully without any sickness to my lil treasures.

See ppl don't seem to get that 80% of all info U hear about proper reptile care is totally based off opinion and personal preference and experience, if u go to a reptile store and a guy there tells u this or that it's not because he is a researcher or a biologist but because he owns and or breeds reptiles and is telling u what works for him. I use both a heat lamp and sand for my leo, under tank heaters like heat rocks can malfunction over heating without your knowledge causing the animal to become uncomfortable, also they will not get eye damage from an above lamp unless u do not provide a proper dark hide as U always should, a comfortable gecko spends the nights hunting and roaming and then retreats UNDERGROUND for the deration of the day, above lights assist in creating a proper night and day cycle ALL reptiles require. Now idk about most ppl but I enjoy actually seeing my gecko via a weak red night light that GECKOS CAN NOT SEE, their eyes dont have the necessary cones required to see the colour red, this means the gecko sees nothing but for instance a dark room, when in fact U get a perfect shot of him/her hunting or etc. Leo's love nice humid hides and large tunnel systems made via Zoo med Excavator works amazingly to create underground retreats for your gecko during day time hours. Impaction is a real issue but many fine grade sand substrates used correctly for a gecko 7inches and up are normally fine, that said it is based also on your gecko, some simple have better aim then others. If U do not believe in sand then simple use paper towel, either way I know of geckos that are currently 15 years old or plus that have spent their entire lives on sand and have had no issue to date. Remember especially as a new reptile owner that a lot U will come to know is based off of experiences U have mixed with information given to U by breeders and etc.

Not to be rude but they don’t need a lamp as they can see in the dark and sand is a no no

Actually they don't neeeeeed the heat lamp and the sand is bad. You need an undertank-heat mat and a reptile carpet, no sand. If you give them a night heat lamp.. just leave it on for 12 hours a day.
@nicolerogers7544

If geckos can't see red, then what does red appear as? White? With a red lamp, you might be blinding the lizard. Use a black lamp. It's best at night even if it's in your room because it has a soft glow that gives a night affect and it won't bother you or the gecko
@Matt-xe5dc

They really can't see red, they don't have light receptors in their eyes to perceive the colour red so they would perceive grey and don't get them a light, just the light in your room will do for viewing.

sand is a horrible idea from all the research i've done. and a heat lamp is pointless due to it collecting it's heat through the belly. heat mat at around 90 degrees F on one third of the tank with a hide on that end, and a cool hide on the oposite (double as a humid one with moss is a-okay)

This is not right at all. A 10 gallon tank is MUCH too small for an adult leopard gecko. They can generally be pretty active, and giving them an enclosure as small as a 10 gallon is not going to work. I recommend something that is around 20-40 gallons long, because they will use all of that space. Do NOT use sand for leopard geckos. It can (and more than likely will) cause impaction in them. To answer any questions, no, they do not live on sand in the wild like we give them in captivity. The “sand” they live on outsideThis is not right at all. A 10 gallon tank is MUCH too small for an adult leopard gecko. They can generally be pretty active, and giving them an enclosure as small as a 10 gallon is not going to work. I recommend something that is around 20-40 gallons long, because they will use all of that space. Do NOT use sand for leopard geckos! They can very likely have impaction issues from swallowing that sand and not being to digest it. To clear up any questions, no, they do not live on sand in the wild like we give them in captivity. The sand we give them is a loose sand (basically what you use for kid “sand pools”). What they are on outside is a very compacted sand, and is mostly made up of rocks. They have little to no chance of getting impacted in the wild. Do not use heat lamps for leopard geckos either. You literally said they are nocturnal and don’t bask, so I don’t understand why you say to use heat lamps. They ARE nocturnal and do NOT want to come out to warm up. A heat mat is a MUCH better option for leopard geckos. As far as the hide goes, you are more than welcome to use a humidity box (to help them shed, as they often can’t get the shed of their toes and can cause loss of blood flow and possibly they limb falling off as a result), but FIRST off make sure there are regular hides in their enclosure (on the cool and warm side, so they can thermoregulate as needed and still stay hidden). After you gave that (as long as it’s not cramped) THEN put in a humidity box. Because too much humidity can cause scale rot and things like that. Also how you said to make it “very wet”, do NOT make it wet at all. Like I said earlier, being too wet (or only being able to hide in a constantly wet hide) can cause scale rot. Make the moss damp, but NOT wet. There should be no standing water inside. Also never use red “night” lights for reptiles. Even though the light is dimmer, it’s still a light, an to the animal, it’s just another light in its enclosure, putting them in a constant state of daytime, which is not good. He can definitely see the red light. Hope this could help anyone, have a blessed day ❤️

Please use compact dirt safe for the animal or better yet a terrarium liner. Even napkins works. Sure u can put em in a 10 gallon but 20-40 is best. Heat mat under the liner is best for warmth. 75-80F is best. Plastic containers r best for ur humidity! With moist moss or napkins! Please keep ur bbys safe and happy. DONT FORGET CALCIUM! I saw that was never stated. e-e;;

I am so sorry to hear that: MY AUNT has a lot of leopard gecko she loves them dearly! I need help between a leopard gecko or a bearded dragon if you think any one is better then another please tell me! I want a leo gecko or bearded dragon which is easy to care for? thanks!

@epicRMiddleton 10 жыл бұрын
Well I have never owned a breaded dragon before , but I do know that a breaded dragon is a lot more expensive to keep as they need a bigger vivairium more extensive heating and more food, but ln the up side they are more active than Leos an also a lot more interactive as they prefers to be handled more than Leos. Even so Leos are wonderful pets but their are still over options. At the moment I have a crested gecko which needs no lighting or heating as they prefers room temperature, they do need a bigger cage than a Leo but no where near as big as a beardy, and they love to be handled but at first they are skittish and will jump away from you. But it's up to you, out of the beardy and the Leo I would go for the bearded dragon but over all the crested gecko is probably your best option. Do your research first so what ever you pick has a happy life . Can't wait to know what you pick. From epicRMiddleton

@The5thorseman
@The5thorseman 9 жыл бұрын
Ty young Films I don't recommend it. It's too bright for them most of the time so it damages their sensitive eyes, messes with their sleep cycle, and the heat doesn't come from the right direction and there's not a very good gradient. I recommend getting a heat pad and hooking it up to a thermostat to regulate the temperature. That way they get heat coming up from their belly, there's a better gradient, and there's no light to mess with their eyes/sleep.

Heat mats are worse than heat lamps because they don't heat up the tank enough
@The5thorseman
@The5thorseman 9 жыл бұрын
Reptile Z Yeah they do. They heat up the floor of the tank, where the gecko will actually be. Anyway, it's better for geckos to get their heat from their belly rather than their backs. It's how they naturally do, and it helps with digestion. They're not a species who likes to bask in lights. Their eyes are also very sensitive to light that heat lamps would be putting out.
