Here's the deal, I think it has more to do with the flavors. My bet is that they're not "vanilla" and "chocolate" and "rocky road" but like they're almost like those stories of drinks at magic bars or whatever where the drinks are labelled for what they do. And as such, I think by the dude requesting "the best flavour ya got", he got, well, the best of the best, something so perfect that there is no match, addictingly heavenly, and by proxy, even the man himself said it, "make sure you savor it, because it's the only one you'll get." or whatever. Quite literally saying that it's the top of the line and the only time he'll enjoy it. When you taste something better than the thing you're used to, you don't find the original thing nearly as tasty. Imagine that times infinity, and I feel like that's what the ice cream situation was.

@@kiralonely i thought the whole thing was a metaphor for drug addiction, opiates in particular, chasing the high and the way it rewires your brain and sends signals to your body stronger than food and water signals telling you you need it, wanting relationships or other interests but pushing them away in search of the next one, that mania is literally identical to being an opiate addict, id bet anything the person who wrote that is in recovery.

To be fair, I was addressing the concept of why the words and specifics could play into the situation in the world of this story, but the inspiration feels very based in addiction. I think that whole concept of story we see in other places pulls from that concept.

The hotel story was irritating, with the hotel being nearly empty as the desk clerk told the man in 317 there is no reason he couldn’t ask for another room and the whole story was just irritating because this thought kept coming back up….Just change rooms. I’d have written that the hotel was a 5 room roadside inn or something and all the rooms were booked, other than that these were all great though!
