In 1984, I put a video camera on a small tripod, extended the center post, spread the legs at the bottom and ran down my dorm hallway pretending it was a Steadicam. Fun to see the same concept come back 40 years later!

Great suggestions. It reminds me of when I was in college many years ago. I shot a short film for Cinematography class using a Super 8 camera. I had one shot where I wanted a Steadicam effect as I followed the main character up a long set of stairs and onto a patio. I used my tripod fully collapsed, and held the top of the tripod as I walked. My teacher was impressed with the smoothness of the shot, and I ended up receiving a B+ for my short as a result. At the moment, I have a Benro fluid head and a monopod which I believe will work well together. Thanks for another inspirational video.

Wow, I've never used a monopod before but it looks incredibly versatile. Reminds me alot of my glidecam days, I use gimbals for work frequently now but i miss that organic feel you get from non motorized stabilization.

@@MJDreams I haven’t yet, no. I’m thinking that it might be a bit too unwieldy for all the moving around we do at a wedding. I have found that using a camera strap and not moving much does a pretty good job, though. This would still be interesting to try… 🤔

I use the fluid head and handle as a shouler rig, it works very well, and the monopod itself for interviews were I don't have room for a tripod (traveling+ confined space).

Honestly I can get the same effects without a monopod. It's all about Rig weight and balance, wide to normal focal length, good technique and some post prod. That girl is really hot though

Great video and technique. To my eye, these moves look better than many gimbal moves. I think that having an anchor point on the ground goes a long way to more stable-looking footage. Can’t wait to practice these moves.

Awesome! The Manfrotto 234RC has a 1/4 thread and the K5 head has a 3/8. I'm assuming you use an adapter? I'm trying one out but it doesn't seem to hold that solidly. Thanks!

Great tip with the 90 degree tilt head. You're right, it's quite challenging finding the right tilt head to match with the video pan/tilt head and monopod. I found the Sirui L-10 tilt head, and it worked great. 😅

Yeah you can actually use a ball head as well if yo want, but that SIRUI also works perfect!

Fantastic video. While it was focused on not needing a gimbal it occurred to me that the monopod would be good with a gimbal too. Combined the video is completely smooth and is a cheap substitute for a slider amongst other things.

Absolutely, again I’m not trying to say a monopod can replace a gimbal, I’m just saying that many gimbal movement can be done with other tools, such as monopod in this case. Monopods are super versatile honestly and they’re not given the attention they deserve

Fantastic video explaining all information without coffee drinking clips or dogs in the videos like most have some weird things going and showing lol. Anyways everyone got their style but I truly love how well your videos are showing most important information. Watching hundreds of youtube videos all the time and looking for good piece of information really drains your brains out lol. Subscribed!

I totally and absolutely hear you, I also find those “coffee moments with friends” unnecessary. But that’s me (guess that makes 2 of us), that’s why I never include them in my videos and just go straight to the point. Really happy you enjoyed the format then. Thanks again for your support

Again, excellent tips. For my kind of videos (moving bikes), the stabilization has always been a problem. Unfortunately, the best solution to me are the action cameras, but they are not exactly at the image quality I surch for.
