Another tip: when you forget their name, you can ask them in a roundabout way! Ex: "What's your name again?" "Rose...?" "Oh, I meant your /last/ name." "Ah. It's Potter." Hehe. That way, you can get their name again without looking like you forgot!

Lmao I always ask them to spell out their names. And even asking for pretty standard names like "Rose" is excusable for me since I'm Dutch and the English and Dutch way of spelling the same name can be pretty different (e.g., Rose with a typical Dutch spelling would become Roos) and both variants are often used in The Netherlands.

If I forget someone's name, I say, "What's your name?" They say their name and I say, "No, I meant your last name." Because then they aren't offended because they think you remember their name and you get both first and last names.

Salem K Yeah, I don't care about offending someone I ask their name out of courtesy and then right before we part ways I say "I'm going to forget your name by the way." So the next time we meet it's not as offensive as it is predictable. It has taken me a year, but I finally have names for my college friends. Only one acted offended because I have been around him more often, but I found out his name is Brandon. P.S. I say acted because he didn't seem all that serious, but you can tell he was just a little.

If it's a social setting, I usually repeat their name "Nice to meet you _____" I then follow that up with "FYI, I'm terrible with names, and there's a good chance I'm going to forget it, I'm not trying to be rude, I'm better with faces." They usually follow that with "Oh my God, me too." Then I don't feel bad when I make them repeat it a few minutes later. 9 times out of 10, I have to repeat mine as well. Usually by the second time it sticks cause I'm not thinking about having to introduce myself and I can focus on their name.

@undercoverduck

imo the best thing to do is repeat their name right after they introduced themselves. So: "Hi my name is Schmerkteldorf" "I'm Kutzlibchen" "Kutzlibchen" and maybe point at them or re-shake their hands along with it. I've seen people do this often and it's really helpful because 1. You have to focus on their name when they say it the first time 2. You'll create muscle memory 3. You'll also further enhance the auditive memory 4. You'll have checked if you even heard it right in the fist place (getting somebody's name wrong can be just as awkward as not remembering it at all) 5. It will give the person you're speaking with a good feeling, like, hey they actually cared and listened to me
@undercoverduck

If just the name appears awkward to you, you could also try "Kutzlibchen, nice to meet you"

Yea the first two are what I started doing and I remember names WAAAY better than I used to. I often have to ask people to repeat their name, because I forget to listen, but then I say their name back to them, like 'pleased to meet you NAME'. Just that alone helps me remember names 50-75% of the time when I used to forget them 95% of the time.

Great topic! Good job, guys! When I worked in a café a long time ago, one of my co-workers and I would compete to see how many of the regulars' names we could remember. Making it into a kind of game was quite helpful. It's been many years since I've seen the people who frequented the café and yet I still remember several of their names. Also, I've decided to risk embarrassment on multiple occasions by asking a familiar face if s/he could tell me his/her name again before the conversation gets too deep. To my relief, many of those people had also forgotten my name.

I've been travelling in many countries a lot for 3 years now, I'm used to meet new and very different people everyday. With time, I've become what you could name as a "Social Cameleon" because I adapt myself pretty fast to any given situation, and any person I'm talking to (adapting my body language, conversation subject and attitude to always be genuine and build the best relationship with each person I meet). So what I can tell from my experience (remembering sometimes 25 or 30 names in the same night isn't as hard as it seems) is that those tips are really good first, and I would add 2: 1/ Don't be afraid to say "Excuse me buddy, what's your name again?" with an honest smile (he will probably ask you for yours again, and you'll laugh together because you felt stupid, and if he doesn't, just thank him for helping you, and ask him for something, a drink, a lighter, what does he like to do, his passion, whatever, and the conversation has started...) Everybody forgets names, and the guy you're talking to has probably forgotten yours as well, so, while most people would feel bad to ask, it's actually a pretty good manner to enter in a conversation and make new friends. Plus, people like their name ("the best sound in the world to your ears"), and like to feel others are interested in them. That's why you should always ask questions and really listen to the answers, more than you talk about yourself, which would sound boring to everyone even if you really are a very interesting person (and by doing that and asking the good question, you can learn a lot of things about a lot of interesting subjects) 2/ Don't be afraid to play this little game I've found: When I'm partying in a flat with a lot of new people (which happens really often as I said), I'm sitting in the main room with a drink, and start asking for a name again (with a smile) to the person next to me. I repeat it out loud with my finger pointed on the person. Then I start repeating every name out loud, pointing my finger on each person (the more person there are, the better the game is) and the first person I asked becomes implicitly and naturally my partner in helping me learning the names (better to ask to a guy who seems to be familiar to most people in the room). If you don't remember some of the names, just ask your new partner with your finger pointed on the people, if he doesn't know, ask someone else (knock an arm next to you, and ask "hey, what's your name? Nice to meet you Cathy! I'm Paul! Hey, do you know this guy there?) or try to attract the person's attention with your hands and a smile (or catch the attention of his friend next to him and ask him his name and his friend's name, with a smile or a wink). Then, repeat the name(s), and continue the game until you've got them all. Repeat them all over again with your smile and your finger. People will smile and tell you you won't be able to memorize them all two hours later. You've got a bet! Talk to the people and enjoy the party (everybody has noticed you now so feel confortable to move, and engage conversation). And win the bet two hours later, because you're a cool guy with a super cool game. Yes it sounds weird, but believe me, it is not, as long as you do it with a smile, like you are playing a game you like. If someone looks at you weirdly at the beginning, just say (always with a smile) "yes it's a trick I use to help me memorize every name". People will be like "Oh, this guy actually cares about us, and he's capable of memorizing our names, that's cool, because I don't even know his name, and I suck at remembering names. By playing this game people will notice you, they will help you if you're wrong, and some will even play with you (or thank you mentally for helping them in learning the names they don't know). And when you're trying to remember someone's name, pointing your finger on him while he's talking, you grab his attention, he will ask you for your name, or smile, or help you. People feel afraid of others reactions, when human beings are more opened to new positive people than they think. The most important things with this game are to always be positive, to always smile, and to feel confortable with what you're doing. You own the room, and you are not afraid to meet new people because you're a cool person, so you're giving them the favor to know you, and you'll learn a lot from this new people with their own life experience. That is the needed mindset in life and relationships, because positive attracts positive.

When I first met my friend, I didn't know his last name so I asked, "Hey how do you spell your last name again?" So I got him to tell me. Lol!

Best tip to use at a party: Other person: Hi, I'm John. You: Oh, me too. The next time he comes up to you saying "Hey, John..." you'll know what THEIR name is.

Honestly for me, I remember people by associating them with someone that I already know with the same name. Works most of the time

Great ideas. And what a stunning room. I'm going to be meeting about 25 people tomorrow for the first time, and I'll be with them for 10 days. Your ideas will come in very handy.

I remember people's names ten times better if I also read it. In school sometimes when I meet someone I glance over at their paper to their name to make sure I have it right in my mind. I met a girl named Aja, pronounces Asia, and I struggled with her name for close to a week and was too scared to keep asking her to tell me again, so I looked at her name on her paper and it suddenly clicked in my mind.

My ability to remember names used to be horrible. I would always remember faces, but not their associated names. After working in hospitality, it now feels very natural to commit everyone's name to memory after the first encounter. A lot of people comment on how good my memory is . . . its not, but I remember people very well, at least, hahaha. It helps to associate their name with characteristics. Or mannerisms. Anything unique about that person (maybe they wear a certain style of clothing, or they always say a certain phrase, etc.)

The language part of my memory is a bit slow to the uptake when speaking and I often have a hard time recalling words, especially nouns and doubly so for proper nouns which obviously includes peoples names. I find that most names don't really stick until I've heard someone else calling them a couple times but sometimes mnemonics or associating with someone else works. I've gotten really good at just not using names, I just smile and say "Hey! It's been awhile, how have you been?" Most of my friends are aware of how bad my vocabulary memory is so they aren't too offended if I'm in a situation where I should know but forget their name.

I'm actually better at remembering names and information about the person than recognizing their face. There's a good chance I just won't recognize someone I barely know as a person I've ever seen/met, but if I realize it or someone clues me in, I'll remember their name and all the info I learned about them, where we met, what we talked about, etc. It's actually the same with non in person stuff. Like if I'm watching a TV show and there's a new character or several new characters, it's tough for me to tell them apart at first or recognize them as a regular character instead of a rando extra/guest star. BUT I'll know their name, all their character info, and the plot details/relationships surrounding them once I realize, "Oh, that's the new neighbor/boss/girlfriend/husband character." After I've gotten used to seeing someone - IRL or on TV - I'll recognize them easily, but yeah, it's faces that are harder for me to learn than names/info.
