For open aggregate base, what kind of edge restraint do you recomend?

Great points in this video I am doing a flagstone patio. Using 4 to 6 in sub base and 1 in bedding layer. Since the flagstones have irregular bottoms, setting them in the beddng layer is key. So I will use a soft mallet to settle the stones against the bedding layer. But when you put down polymeric sand, do you consolidate it? Pretty sure you can't run a tamping machine on top of flagstone because it will break the stone. Even with some protection. What's your recommendation on consolidating the poly sand in between the stone joints? underneath of it. Saw your other videos on bedding layer material. But, some manufacturers have recommended using stone dust as the bedding layer for a natural stone. What are your thoughts?
@iamahardscaper2 жыл бұрын
You can use a rolling compactor on it, but if you do not have access to one you should still find a way to consolidate the jointing compound with some sort of vibratory force or use NOCO by Techniseal as the polymeric sand. If you are using polymeric sand as your jointing sand, do not use stone dust it will cause it to fail.

What is your opinion of contractors that break up and using the old pavers under the new pavers?
@iamahardscaper Жыл бұрын
Oh I can’t see that working well…
@johnoliver9885 Жыл бұрын
@@iamahardscaper Nor do I but it is a thing here with contractors… saving shifting, saving fill.
@iamahardscaper Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't count on a contractor to get the right gradation necessary for that aggregate.

I'm doing a Flagstone walk way on clay soil. I have excavated down 8 inches from the top of concrete entrance. The area is 8 feet out from entrance, turns right, 5 feet wide and runs out 32 feet. I would like to grade of 1/8 inch per foot. I had planned to lay down landscape fabric, base corse (crusher fine) 4 inch, and sand for bedding 1 inch. On one side I have a flower bed running the full length of the walk way, the outside edge I had planned on running drainage pipe. I have cut my flagstone into different sizes squares and rectangles, I want the straight edges to come together and had planned to use sand to fill in the joints. will my walkway project fail?
@iamahardscaper2 жыл бұрын
Do you experience freeze thaw cycles? Clay is a weak subsoil, I would add some 3/4” crushed stone to it and compact it, then fabric. Is crusher fine chips and dust? Don’t use that. You said 8” excavation but only 4” base? What will make the rest of the height up? I would do a minimum 6” base if you are in a climate that has freeze thaw.
@antonioarael92712 жыл бұрын
@@iamahardscaper yes freeze and thaw. I will take your advice and add the 3/4" crushed stone. I went 8" to have enough base course to make up for the various thickness of the flagstone 1" to 3". so now Im thinking. Compact subsurface adding the 3/4" crushed stone, fabric, 6" base course compacted (can I use 1/4" crushed stone here or what would you recommend) because the crusher fine dose have dust in it, then lay down the flagstone (do I want sand as a bedding for the flagstone? ). Since the edges of the flagstone are coming together tight 1/16" or tighter, I was going to use sand. Then vibrate the sad as shown in your presentation. will this give me a long lasting walkway.
@iamahardscaper2 жыл бұрын
I would prefer sand setting bed. In that case I would use a 3/4" minus base at 6" and then a 1" sand setting bed for the flagstone. It sounds like you are on the right path.

When installing pavers next to existing concrete , how high should the pavers sit before final compaction?
@iamahardscaper2 жыл бұрын
I typically go 1/16” to 1/8” above when using HPB as my bedding. 1/8” to 1/4” when using concrete sand.

Question: I want to relay the pavers around the inground pool of my parents and I want to know how you would do it ? If i want to do a full repair can I use 3/4 clear with hpb. can i use a plate compactor around a concret pool ? Thanks !!
@iamahardscaper2 жыл бұрын
You could use Gator Base. Remove pavers, remove the bedding layer, scrap off enough from the base to make room for the Gator Base, compact, install non woven geotextile, bedding layer, gator base, pavers. You should be able to compact. Is it a pool with a liner with like 3’ of concrete around the pool?
@chatderue2 жыл бұрын
@@iamahardscaper Good !! thx They pour concret in the base of the pool. For the walls its like a plastic mold that they pour concret in it. The liner seems in vinyl. On the top of the edge of the pool there's concret caps and pavers. But the for the bedding layer can i use hpb or concret sand would be better ?
@iamahardscaper2 жыл бұрын
I can’t say what shape the pool is in, but you should be able to compact. I use HPB rather than concrete sand. We also have a video on installing synthetic base that may help

The number one failure I see with paver installs in my area is people using dinky little plate packers that put down enough force for 1-2 inch lifts, and doing 10 inch lifts. I get it, not everyone can afford a Weber CR3 at a price of $8800 but damn, go to princess auto and buy a reversible packer for $1000 like I did. Works just about as well until you can find a second hand machine. The prices in Ontario are psychotic but there are work arounds. The second most common failure I see is incorrect polysand installation and after that is using bloody limestone screenings. Horrible product lol.
@iamahardscaper2 жыл бұрын
Definitely! Even if you can’t buy one, they can be rented. Delivered and picked up. There is no excuse for poor compaction. And yeah limestone screenings suck 👍
