I have used the Buck 119 to process a deer a few years back. Such a great knife, held an edge well but it was just a little bigger than I like when processing. It was good for skinning but a little bulky for the rest. I love the review, keep up the great work!

I bought the Ka-bar Turok several months ago - my first fixed blade and second knife of my collection. Went camping and had to try battoning . It worked well and was fun as Hell. Effed up the black finish of the knife but I got over it quickly as this knife looks better with use. Got a rise out of everyone looking at me as if I’d lost my marbles. Want to try my hand doing other bushcraft stuff asap. Just bought a Lionsteel M4 in Magnacut and looking at getting the Demko Free Reign in Magnacut when its rereleased. This is turning into an expensive hobby/addiction 😂

I have used a Buck 119 many times on elk. Everything from field dressing to processing. The one I used was a brass and cocobolo version with the standard 420HC blade. It is special to me because it was owned by a friend of mines grandfather who had passed away and left it to her. He taught my CCW class and knew my family for years. It is also from the first production run when Buck moved to Idaho as it has the Idaho tang stamp. My other 119 I have left is a July of 2022 Buck of the Month run. It has a red micarta handle and a flat ground S35VN blade. I haven't used it on anything yet but hope to someday.

I had the Buck 119, I had to hand checker the black handle so i could grip it with blood on it. It also took a lot to sharpen it. The Cold steel has a nice blade and I loved that handle. I have the Turok, but I need to change out the handle.

Wow, $75 for a San Mai Recon Tanto is a good deal. I have one that was a "second" from Cold Steel when they used to sell them through the mail. My mother bought it for me and it is my highest priced blade to this day. Whatever the "fault" is, the knife looks perfect and flawless. I have the $50 Recon Tanto and SRK made in the SK5 carbon steel so I can keep the one my mother gave me in pristine condition, but I like them too. I don't have the "Hunter" but would like to. They're all nice knives and good deals even in today's economy. I have seen some super cheap ones and I avoid those because they're probably some of those counterfeit knock offs. I would be cool paying $75 for a San Mai steel knife. I recently purchased a couple of Steel Will knives since they seem harder to find and cost more. I paid a fair price and they're very nice looking, well made knives. I have a 305 and a 315. Both had for less than $70 with shipping. Good steel, but San Mai for $75 is a sweet deal. I have not asked or checked recently, but WalMart still sells the Prodigy for around $56 or $59 which is a slight increase, but still cheaper than the Strongarm and really pretty much the same knife at a lower price. I know one WalMart that carries them and yet the Super WalMart nearest my home only has 2 or 3 in stock at anytime. Weird, but that's how it is with Wally World.

I would recommend buying a Becker and stripping the coating, honestly. I have 3 Beckers and they’re best naked, with a developed patina and less drag from the coatings. If you’re wanting something more robust, of course. Moras are great at what they do, just a different animal. My Becker knives are some of my most loved and used.

I'm intrigued by Becker knives. Which one would you suggest I pick up? And what do you think they are best for? @@GhostManCutlery
@GhostManCutlery
@GhostManCutlery Жыл бұрын
@@samueljlarson Honestly, one of the mid-size line to start with if that’s the knife size you’re familiar with. So the bk16, bk18, bk19. I myself have the discontinued bk17 that I decided to strip and make ebony handles for in that mid-size range. It’s not too large for most tasks, but chunky enough I feel I can use it for things that with a Mora is risky. I can baton a little harder, the wood splits a bit easier with the thicker stock, and if need be I can pry a split apart without excessive blade flex. If I were to choose from the available in that line, it would probably be the bk16 or Nessmuk. I usually carry a Becker when I’m only bringing 1 knife into the woods without an axe, etc. i think that’s the strengths of some of the larger knives in the line as well. They have the ergos to do the finer tasks but also chop, split, etc. In the right hands any knife can work, but with a Becker I’m never concerned about the knife failing.

Thanks Aaron, great recommendations. On the sheath noise front, I don't think the rattle when you shake it holding the blade area of the sheath transfers realistically when you are wearing the sheath on your belt. Mostly, I think retention is the most important factor, not noise, like when you shake it from the blade area on the sheath. Thanks again and keep up all the good work!!

Aaron-as always-good work. I have knives in several price ranges but for me, as well as many that consult with me about knives, this range is a prime area that many want to stay in. And I agree 100% about the Gerber but I'm seeing "the Internet" start to tell me it's dated. It's NOT...regardless of the Internet bushcrafters saying different. I have one as a loaner that I would NOT feel any anxiety having as a main knife if circumstances materialized that necessitated it.

Not sure how they did the range testing. But a 5 watt Handi Talkie, on 2 meters with a good long antenna, has a range of maybe 5 miles on Simplex. I've actually got five of the nine knives on your list. Lol. I've got the original USA made Coldsteel Master Hunter with a nylon sheath which I've owned for about 25 years. That's pulled a few deer apart over the years. Next is the Gerber Strongarm which is one of my general purpose knives I use whilst camping and hunting. The second Coldsteel product I own is the Recon Tanto in San Mai, I liked this so much I bought it's little brother the Kobun. Next on the list isn't the Morakniv Garberg but also it's little brother the Kansbol. This is a sensational tool and weights next to nothing. Finally the Joker Campero which I've only had since earlier this year and have yet to use to process a deer, however it is in my pack and will get a work out in the future. As a by note though I haven't got a Buck 119 but I have thought about the 120 often but it's too similar to the classic K-Bar USMC that I've owned for over 20 years . Great channel though I'm in Australia and the price of some of these knives come in at way over $100us equivalent but luckily some do. Keep it up.

I've had my Buck 119 since the mid 80's. Used it mostly when camping. But, I have broken down deer to package. Its a good solid knife. I also have the Cold Steel Recon Tanta. I bought mine way back in the 80's, when they where made in the USA out of CarbonV steel. I've never really used it for much. Because I've never had too. Besides, I consider it more of a Tactical knife. I believe the Navy Seals even used them for a time back in the 80's, but I could be wrong.

I have the lionsteel m4 It has “hard” m390 steel I use a diamond plate tough at first so I had to have resolve to figure out how to put a edge on. The water stone i have was simply not hard enough. I replaced the g10 scales with bocote wood which made the knife lighter and in my opinion looks nicer. The knife sheath is nice . I have used the design to make a sheath for another knife. I bought the knife because I went on a hiking trip with a enzo badger d2 steel blade and the next day after it got wet it had some rust on it. I sold that knife. Its a good smallish belt knife. Problem with having six fixed blade knives is I only backpack once or twice a year. I think the 5 inch indy hammered knife blade and my battle horse Smokey Mountain razor are better for batoning. I would use the Lionsteel M4 to baton too it’s just not as long. I think you bring a knife because it’s fun and sometimes useful. In my opinion not a necessity. A small pocket saw and pocket knife is actually more practical for what I do. Knives are still cool though. That’s the problem with growing up watching westerns the knife is part of my DNA haha I had Cowboy boots at one time in my life My hunting partner says you can’t have too many knives. I have 3 pocket knives and 6 fixed blades. some fall in the tool category and one in the novelty category. The m4 is kind of a hybrid it’s looks nice and is a good tool.

I just finished deer hunting season with my Joker Campero. That thing field dressed a couple deer, cut through the breast plates, and skinned like a dream. The best part, it was still hair popping sharp when I was done! I was glad to see it on your list. I own the master hunter too, but it stayed home in favor of the joker. Instead I replaced the dangler with ulticlip and use it for my daily carry.

I bought the Joker Campero earlier this year and have yet to christen it, though it sounds by your account like it can easily handle the job on large deer . I've also got the original USA made Coldsteel Master Hunter and though it's not actually retired I thought I'd give the Campero a run this last (Australian) winter, just didn't manage to bag a deer. That's hunting.

I know that no deer feeling. The 2 deer it dressed were my buddies. We still have an extended elk season here, so im hoping I get the chance to use it on my own animal! I'd say if you get the chance, bring the Campero into the field. The reason I liked it over the master hunter is the tip is a little more forgiving when trying to avoid opening the gut sack. Still enough there to get the job done, just not as likely to over penetrate.

I have 5 of your 9 and Ihave several other knives under $100 that I use and love. Like you said I prefer a knife that can do multiple things I always have a hatchet/axe or saw nearby so I don’t really need a big machete type knife.

I have 4 from your list, likely on your recommendation from individual reviews. I would definitely recommend the SRK in there too.

Hi Aaron, My Turok has been used a lot and I love it, your review of it was one of the main reasons why I brought it, thanks I’m very happy with it. I did rap the handle with the rap that they use for tennis rackets, and with that it’s great for me ( thanks to Chris Tanner for that) Are the new scales bigger than the original ones? I saw a comment about the hardware, is it okay in your opinion? Take care & a great week to all.

Best budget is the cold steel gi tanto. $20 on Amazon. Can beat the heck out of it and it just keeps going. Very basic steel, design and probably not great or ugly in most minds but for the price point it cannot be beat. Sharpens up really easily too.

Okay I have a hunting story. I am reasonable at sharpening knives. I promised my neighbor I would sharpen his 119 and never got around to it. Hunting week comes and I was all like oh s*** ,opps,well take mine. They did 3 deer and one moose on that trip with my 119. They said no problems whatsoever and it was still pretty dam sharp when it was returned to me. And yes I did give them there's back all sharpened. All was good.

I’ve got the Gerber prodigy , I like the strong arms sheath better , but I can’t tell any difference in the blades , please tell me if I’m wrong on that. But honestly I carry the little cheap buck lite fixed blade a whole lot more, takes and holds a great edge , and I don’t think I paid 30.00 bucks for it .full tang , but I don’t think it’s more than about three inches long . Love the mora though , I use em both camping and fishing , for what I do both are perfect.

@gideonstactical

Depends on what you want that I have to do for camping. I would way rather have the master Hunter than the SRK. For general utility go bag situations SRK is all you need.

I was jumping around looking at fixed blades for a bit, and Midway had deals on Cold Steel and snagged the AK-47 Field knife in 3v for about 120$ after tax and shipping. It's a surprisingly great feeling knife. Good balance despite the thick stock, the contoured grip is surprisingly good and locks the hand in. Unlike the Harpoon or BK7 I've had, I don't feel like I have to change anything which makes me super happy.

@@joshuanapier855 Oh yeah, was considering the SRK, but preferred G10 scales and the more aggressive grip style of the Field Knife. Few ounces heavier than the SRK, but it balances beautifully with it's slightly shorter blade and more substantial grip. I imagine the weight difference also comes from the less substantial tang for the SRK as it's similar to a traditional Ka-Bar tang where the Field Knife is the same front to back as the grip and not overmolded.

The gerber strongarm copies are over an 1 1/2" shorter, so that should make it easier to tell the difference. real one is 9.8" and fakes are right around 8 1/4"
