How would you repair credit?
@maduross2 жыл бұрын
@@justjojo1666 Same basic way it just takes exponentially longer. Also try to negotiate with creditors to get negative items off your credit report so you don’t have to wait 7 years for it to fall off. If you have an account in collections, never make an promise to pay, implicit or otherwise, bc it will restart the 7 year clock. And finally hope your creditors don’t sue you for the debt. This can mean “laying low” on some debts, ie you have a 5 year old account in collections and you wanna do the right thing and pay it so you call in to ask about payment plans. They could refuse and sue you instead. It’s shitty but it’s all a game to be played in the end…

Be advised though, Chase pre-approval still gives a hard pull and dropped me 5 points on my third and final Chase card. I am getting a new mortgage in 6m (moving) and fear I have to tap the brakes due to average age of account, etc Now barely over 800. For the Aussies out there, not all of this impacts you. For example, our credit scores do not look at utilisation (it's not reported) but your address and loan vendor does impact your report. Your mobile provider probably does report info though (Optus yes, others, I the future). Additionally, getting a new job or home doesn't rely on this score and can't check or add to your report

Hi Sebby, very informative content! We are in escrow and trying to maintain and boost our credit score. Out of curiosity, when's the best time to pay the "minimum payment or due date?" I've always paid mine at least 2 days before the due date. Is there a sweet spot on when to pay it each month? Thank you! I just subscribed from your channel:)
@theonlybuster2 жыл бұрын
The main thing is that it takes **TIME**. So many people get discouraged when they don't see big results in a week, month or even quarter. For many of us, our credit history starts at 18, and for some of us it's even younger. So if you're 24, you have at least 6 years of various good and bad data collected already. That's at least 72 months! 2 months of good behavior is a drop in the bucket in the grand scheme of things. This is how I explaind it to a buddy who was discouraged when he didn't see and major improvement after 3 months. Best advice if you're trying to fix your credit. Pull your report once, make necessary changes, then wait 6 months to a year to check the report/score again.
@savkalipez2 жыл бұрын
This is so true. I'm 24 , I got my first card at 18 and I've had car loans, etc. since 19 and even now still don't think my credit is generally considered very "established" by the bureaus 🙃

A lot of older people like my parent's generation have some wonky or outdated thoughts about how credit works. They think I'm nuts for how often I apply even though most of my cards are no annual fee cars and I've never paid a late fee or interest. I've tried to help encourage them to get some nice sign up offers when they hit historic highs, but they're very resistant because they think opening new cards hurts your score a lot. I've had to explain to them multiple times that it's only a small, temporary drop.
@sschwartz14882 жыл бұрын
Does cancelling or opening new credit cards have a big impact on your score? I never usually apply for more then 3-4 credit cards every two years, but I find myself wanting to cancel them after hitting the bonus for the following year's annual fee. Is it okay to cancel and churn credit cards like this or will it have a huge impact on your score?
@davidboeger67662 жыл бұрын
The effect of opening cards is negligible but can matter if you're expecting to apply for a mortgage or some other big loan in a few months. Closing cards doesn't technically have any impact in and of itself. However, the biggest impact is on length of credit history. Your credit score benefits from the oldest open account as well as having a high average age of account, so the impact of closing any account depends on the relative ages of your accounts. You wouldn't want to close your oldest account, but for example, if you have many old accounts and you just close a much newer one, your score may actually improve if your average age of accounts goes up. This is somewhat complicated by the fact that credit score also improves with number of accounts. In general, you want to create a base of older accounts before closing a bunch of new ones, but after a certain point, the difference is negligible.
@sschwartz14882 жыл бұрын
@@davidboeger6766 thanks so much for the reply. I've kept most of my accounts (CSR, Chase Freedom, Discover It) over 9 years now but I'm always concerned churning the new bonuses will impact my score cancelling after a year. Great to know it doesn't make a difference. Would it matter if you close too many in too short of a time or does that only apply with opening too many at once?
@125henni2 жыл бұрын
I mistake I've made and learned from is asking for a credit increase and taking a hard pull instead of just applying for a new card and exchanging that pull for a new bonus on a new card. Never again

I'd imagine my credit score would be a lot better if I didn't have high balances reported so often, I use the interest free periods fairly well, but once I pay everything off, I'd imagine things would be quite a bit better. I set up autopay for the minimum payment every month so I don't miss any payments, it would be much more ideal to pay interest on a card than to receive a late payment (though you would end up doing both if you missed a payment). Set up autopay, make sure you pay off statement balances as they're reported so you don't pay interest, and just enjoy the rewards that you get from the cards.

Because they're worried about mortgage insurance. . and now they got to put all their expenses on a 24% APR credit card. .. drives me nuts. Go FHA and invest your money!! It's kind of like asking a morbidly obese doctor for advice on losing weight. Kids in school don't want to get lectured by civil servants/public school teachers. Also credit algos change semi-frequently, we're up to like fico 10. It's not a good idea to tell people "keep CC balances low" and then they take a personal loan to pay it off, and then FICO hits you hard for having a personal loan rather than a CC balance at 0% for 18 months with a 7% Utilization. That exact situation happened to a few people. It's better to teach people about credit, and how banking works and the differences between banks and credit unions, and teach them about retirement(401k/IRA/403b/SEP IRA) and taxes and social security, rather than some encompassing class with tests and study guides. A lecture series once a month with Q/A is probably all that's really needed for proper education in the school system. But you have all of this stuff on youtube to accomplish that via Khan Academy and various major banks.
