As a gardening noob, could I make a humble request of you? Instead of doing "what to plant RIGHT NOW" videos, could you do "what to plant NEXT MONTH!" videos? It would give knuckleheads like me the time to figure out what I need, where it can go, and run out and get it.

This was my first year gardening, and I definitely suffered from doing everything too late. I've decided instead to take notes so I know what to do next year! ...though with my ADHD, who knows if I'll remember. 🫠 I agree with you though, that it'd be more helpful to get a video like this even a week in advance!

My mother/gardening companion passed last August. So I didn't plant my garden. Just couldn't. But I took chicken poop and mixed it in with soil, thinking it had a year to become less acidic. Ended up with a bed of potatoes, a bed of squash, and a bed of tomatoes. Like crazy growing better then if I had of planted them myself. Tomatoes have fruit, just still green, up on Vancouver Island so just hitting our hot hot temps about now... lol hot hot 85ish, 29c today whatever that converts to. Lol

So sorry for your loss & glad you are taking time for yourself. I lost my mother & sister both in May 2022. I was going to ask my sister to teach me to garden that year. Just this year, I am learning and just planted heirloom tomato plants from my grandfather’s seeds which my sister had carried on for 30 years. My turn now. All going to say, it is proving very healing to be in the garden doing the work my family has done before and makes me feel closer to them. Gardening without your mom will be so hard, but I hope in time it can provide you a continued connection to her. So wonderful you two could share such a beautiful thing. All the best to you.

Existing plants: Mildew- trim all old leaves to trunk, fertilize 7. Tomatoes: limp old plants along if not diseased. New early girl, juliette, ..., fertilizer neptunes harvest.

When younger and planted my garden in the ground, now is when the weeds took over my garden as high 90s with 80% humidity was just too much. However, this year I planted in small 4' beds and only planted tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers, and accidentally let them get so thick that they aren't getting many weeds. I also put pine needles and bark on top which I am sure helped, I still got good production though. I did the aspirin spray and more calcium but still had a few bad tomatoes, and birds got to a few. I cut the bird pecks out and still froze them though.

SoCal gardener in Zone 9b, here. 👋🏾 This is my first time having a summer garden (my one-year gardenversary is Aug 26). Unfortunately, this summer, my garden hasn't been as successful as I was hoping it would be. Many of my plants are not producing as successfully as I am hearing that other gardeners' plants are producing. I also had to pull up a few that died on me due to either extreme heat or pest pressure. It's a little disappointing, but I'm not discouraged. 🙂 I will try again next summer, God-willing! I have a few seedlings in my mom's GreenStalk that are still thriving, so hopefully the season isn't completely over for me yet. Based on your suggestions, I may try to plant some more zucchini/squash, but I'm personally ready to start on my fall seedlings! Great video, Brian. 👍🏾

Now 3 years in a row, I sowed cucumbers in the spring, and I'm harvesting them till the end of October..I'm in a northern Croatia, but that doesn't matter, found a way to keep them healthy the whole season - LOCATION! I have grape vines crawling over them, making a shade throughout the year! I have grapes and cucumber hanging next to each other, and now, even tomatoes, both started climbing, and reached the grape vines, and from there, they support each other! I think that shade is the most important thing in growing cucumbers, cause I planted one bed on the different location, just to see if shade is the answer, and it is! I had healthy and plentiful harvest from other bed too, but when the first heat wave came, that was it for them! But the ones under the grapes, are THRIVING!

I've watched your video on what to plant in July and tried some summer squashes, cucumbers and basil. I can't wait to see how they're gonna do. Depending on the weather, squashes here can become sick quite fast. I think I'll try your idea of planting them in August (like this week or they won't not have enough time to produce) and see where it gets me. As for tomatoes, we're usually doing good at this time of the year but in a couple of weeks, they should be full of diseases. I've tried to put some of my plants in Smart Pots this year, hoping they'd do better than the other ones. For now, the plants in Smart Pots are gigantic and beautiful while I've seen a few sick leaves on the other ones. We'll see.

I use to garden in ground but got tired of the pest’s like gophers, slugs and snail. I now have four 10foot rain gutters with up to 32 buckets (5 gal). Each rail has a float valve that maintains the water level. I also made earth box’s for squash etc. I’ve grown beets, peppers, spaghetti squash (vertically ) lots of various tomatoes, cucumber’s, broccoli, eggplant, green onions, and even corn. There are many benefits to growing as I do but primary is water usage. When the plants are really growing and producing fruit the water usage is about 55 gallons in 4-5 days when it is hot. The water is held in a 55gal container and gravity feeds to the rails. The plants get as much water as they need and no more. I’ve been growing in buckets on rain gutters for 5 years.

I having terrible year with cucumber plants. I used all kind of organic sprays and DE dust and Sevin dust. Even my Korean melon plants were growing good. But it seems to me, after I used all the organic sprays, especially Sevin 500 hose spray, my plants started to died. And also when I removed damaged leaves or the bottom leaves. I seen on another KZbin video, gardener had used peppermint oil and dish soap and it worked well for cucumber beetles and lantern flies. Help. I am doing what you are doing. Keep on growing more cucumber plants

Cucumbers: Look up Lofthouse Landrace Gardening and get seeds from several sources and then save seeds from plants that survived. Replant saved seed for two to three years and the pest and mildew problems reduce/vanish. This works because survivor plants have higher brix/sugar levels that ward off insects and disease.

I am redoing mine. Too Many fixes and connections that just pop open during our 115 degree heat here in the low AZ desert! Looking forward to my fall and winter garden. I HAVE to remember, grow nothing in our summer. Plants that like it hot don't like our temps!

Seeing seeds sprouting in August is keeping me going while everything looks tired. Our green beans survived sow bugs and slugs in the spring and Japanese beetles in June. Ugh! Gratefully other veggies are rocking with tomatoes in particular, starting to explode!

I used a thin layer of seeding hay over my carrots … and my yellow squash is going crazy and my regular green zucchini is good this year… I planted less this year, but there is still like moving across the garden going crazy… (7A) however this year we have cicada 6:32 killer bees they’re not exactly pollinators, and they attack every time I go to my garden so it’s not been fun… And yes, the end of July and August I’m about finished except for my tomatoes. I got to jar, tomatoes… still waiting on my sweet potatoes and butternut squash although I think sweet potatoes should come out by the end of the week…

Glad to hear I can still grow tomatoes. All mine were killed by the extreme heat in the North this year even with heavy watering. This has been one of the worst/hottest summers in the far North of the USA in decades. There were probably more 90-100 deg F days in previous summers. But, they were spaced out so the plants had time to re-hydrate and recover. It's just been like 20+ 90-100 deg F days in a string this year. I lost all my cabbage to sun scorching, too. The animals are all hurting for water. So, I lost my peppers to either baby rabbits, squirrels, or mice. I tried to put out traps in my garden. But, I just kept catching sparrows in them. All of my blueberry and raspberry bushes are half dead too. I think I am just going to give up on outdoor gardening for a few years... at least until this terrible weather ends. I have a basement where I could hang growlights and grow in pots. So, I think I will just do that next year. I don't understand how anyone can garden in multiple years of drought when temps are 10-15+ degrees above average almost everyday. We haven't had a significant rainstorm, or even any cloud cover, in over a month.

Alot of my direct sown seeds or seedlings that are too small here in Georgia don't survive. They either damp off because they're so close to the ground or get eaten by bugs. Now I'm even making sure I keep beans in pots until I'm sure they're established enough to survive in the ground. This humid and rainy climate has made it very hard to grow things to the fruiting stage. It has finally been dry all week the first time in this whole summer and now some thins are beginning to fruit that weren't before.

You are correct....I'm over it! Tomatoes are terrible after waaaay too much hot sun, now wasaaay too much rain. Unsalvageable. Onions didd pretty well. Only lost 3. Peppers are still putting up a terrific fight, tho they are smaller. I only got 3 eatable cucumbers off my one plant. Sun was just too powerful no matter how much water i gave. No man, I'm done. And carrots? Yeah I would try them again if i could find more organic seed, but thats doubtful too. I just cannot afford more fertilizer, soil and mulch as I'm all out of everything this time. Bummer, but thanks

Hmmmmmmm....I planted my zukes in a different garden this year - not only was it "too late" but they for sure dont get enough sun there. Been in for almost two months, are tiny as f and havent produced anything. May have to throw caution, dig them up, and move them to where theyve succeeded before...🤔 There's really nothing to lose at this point and it would be like starting with a mature transplant if they survive. 😄🤞🤞

I will not do any work outside after 10 am in the summer. I'm heat intolerant and I just can't. Menopause + life-long heat intolerance ... just no. This means I have to have a pretty well drought tolerant planting. I will water late at night or early in the morning so that there is maximum water retention. But I will NOT work in my garden space after about 10am here in Oregon. I HATE hot.
