7 CURRY in GUYANA | Learning to make seven curry in Georgetown

Seven Curry is a popular Guyanese Tradition and learning how to make it is a must on any trip to Guyana. I took a day class with Singing Chef Eon John and he taught me his recipe for the 7 vegetarian curries!
There are lots of different ways to make 7 curry and it was definitely a fun day out and a really great introduction to Guyana and Guyanese food.

7-curry dish is very famous in Tamilnadu in India. This is done during harvesting festival called "Pongal" in all villages. Additionally, there is a dish made of 7 vegetables and us done during a festival called "Thiruvathirai". I am from Tamilnadu.

That’s not 7 curry. It is not supposed to have okra and bigan. You need to go to a wedding or jhandi in the countryside to eat real 7 curry because town always change stuffs up.

Nice however it’s not the real deal. Okra isn’t part of 7 curry. 7 curry consists of: bagee(spinach), aloo curry(potatoes), katahar curry(Breadfruit family), bigan curry (eggplant), mango curry, pumpkin and Dhal. Added onto 7 curry or curries are rice, achar(made with green mango, scallions, garlic, pepper, masala, oil, salt). Traditionally 7 curry or curries are served at Hindu Weddings or Pujas.

1.I am an Indian who lived all of my life in guyana 2. I am a Hindu who go to jandi and Indian weddings and in all of my life I have never had 7 curry with Ocra in it. I am sorry to say this but that is not a true 7 curry. Just because you have 7 different curries does not make it a traditional 7 curry.

Oh my! This was not a proper representation of what seven curry is. The original seven curry doesn't have papaya, okra in it. If you ever get a chance to come again, you need to visit a 'wedding house' or a 'jhandi' to get the true experience. I didn't even see roti there nor achar.

7 curries is not a everyday cooking in Guyana it is only cook by Indo Guyanese Hindus when they celebrate or give thanks to their Gods yearly pujas throughout the country also in Trinidad. As the Indians was leaving from North India n South India to these new land they know nothing about they had to make use of what they have at that time in history the lotus leaf replace the banana leaf n the cooking remain the same for over 100 years and it is South Indian cooking
