I have only caught one musky in my life and it was by accident. Was smallmouth fishing the nolichuckey river here in Tennessee and hooked into a 40” and somehow landed it! Now 40” may not seem that big to you but when your reeling in 20” tops small mouth and suddenly you hook into a musky in that moment it feels like your reeling in a whale especially on light/medium tackle. A retired game warden was fishing beside me that day and said had he not seen firsthand he would have called bullshit! He also suspected the musky may have been sick or weakened by the current from recent rains because they normally fight way harder than that fish did! Our river is fed from the mountains of North Carolina and in heavy rains it can get up to ten times faster current overnight and can really tax fish and affect fishing a lot! Without the rains there are sections with fast undercurrent giving the river its name Nolichuckey translates to river of death in Cherokee!
