Really good balanced video. I’m getting an EV later this year (not a Tesla - too expensive) as a company car but can honestly say I wouldn’t get one as a private buyer yet, even a used one. I’m lucky I will have free charging at work (once a week) so 99% of the time will not need to use public chargers - just on the occasional longer journey a few times a year. I appreciate they don’t make sense yet for a lot of people but this will change over time as range increases, costs come down and charging infrastructure improves. A few years away until they overtake (excuse the pun!) ICE vehicles but having test-driven a few and spoken to many EV owners, I think the vast majority of people will love their EV’s.

Agreed. I've had a Tesla for a few months, now, and prefer the quiet smooth ride. I had it over 100mph on the open road with a passenger comfortably sleeping in the back seat. And, Tesla charging stations are so good and so common that I can't imagine long distance travel in any other EV. Definitely digging the Tesla Experience.

Travel sickness is due to mismatch between motion inputs from your inner ear and vision, modified by your brains anticipation and expectation of motion. Worst in back seat (you can’t see what is happening as well), front passenger seat better (vision better match for motion) best when driving yourself (brain has better idea of what happens next cos your in control and therefore anticipation of motion accurately matches inner ear measurement).

As someone in the US, there's literally no inconvenience when it comes to having EVs here, unless you're driving 300+ miles a day in road trips or something. And knowing how the majority of driving trips aren't even close to that, range anxiety literally can't happen with nearly anyone. We're littered with single-family housing with zoning laws literally everywhere making it illegal to not have massive driveways for no reason, garage obviously included, everyone can just get a charger in their house, which can literally just be a Level 1 charger for most trips, plug in your EV at night, and still have full batteries every day. You don't even need chargers at your workplace, unless you have a Nissan Leaf and cross state lines to get to work.

Good video but really misses a fundamental benefit of running an EV. If you're able to home charge then you'll hardly ever have to wait for the car to charge as you'll wake up to a full battery every day. Sure there will be someone out there that drives hundreds of miles every day but for most people, a 200 mile range is more than ample. After all, 12,000 miles per year is 230 miles per week, not per day. And when you do drive a long way, you'll only need to charge after driving about 3 1/2 hours. After that, 35 minutes at a Tesla Supercharger will give you another 3+ hours of driving.

It funny how so many new ev drivers don’t realise that if you treat it like a model phone (plug it into a power point/socket at home) before going to bed, you don’t actually go to chargers hardly at all. & it’s cheaper at home as well.

I'm glad you liked the Tesla. I used to call myself a petrol head but I think I'm just a car nut. I'm on my second electric car (neither are Teslas unfortunately, maybe one day?) and wouldn't go back. I don't miss the noise, but you made me realise that I did used to enjoy snicking through a nice gearbox. I also used to suffer from car sickness. It sounds like you are just the same as I was. If I kept my eyes on the road, I was fine. So, in the back, this was more difficult and so you and I suffered more. In the passenger seat it is easier to do, if you realise that it will help, and when driving, you have to do it so no problem. The re-gen braking? I love it, I want true 'one pedal driving' cars. My Zoe wasn't and my current car is closer but not quite. If the drive is jerky, it's the driver, not the re-generative braking. It's no different to lifting off the throttle on an ICE car and applying the brakes. It can be done smoothly or not smoothly. Great video, I'll be looking out for more.

Why don't you charge at home? Or use the Tesla network?
@colinjefferies40722 жыл бұрын
Enjoyed that video, I laughed when you saw the VW sign as it was first thing I saw 😇. Don’t know if that was your issue though. We have a Ioniq 5 (Wife’s car ) and had similar connection issues first few days. Love petrol cars all my life but free chargers at work so 7000kms since January 5th costing me €24 in town a few times here in Ireland. Trading my A7 for a Model 3 now so can’t wait.

I experience the exact same travel sickness symptoms too. Sitting in the back of a car is vomit-inducing whilst it's only marginally better in the passenger seat. Isn't it strange.

out of curiosity, did you change the power settings on the tesla before doing the drag? i'm sure this model came with the power adjustments in the computer and turn on ludacris mode - mine did.

Big issue is charging like with the time it takes to find a working or suitable charging station and then the Time to Charge. It’s ok if you commute in the range of the battery or have the free time waiting. The other issue I personally buy secondhand cars and the recommended battery life is around 8Y and batteries on decent evs tend to cost more than the car is worth at that stage of life or at best well over half the value. Witch I can see this corsing issues with the second hand market where the average road user buys. Openly emit I am not a Fan of EVS but they are suitable to those who like or afford them and have the luxury of free time.

Most people laugh when you say your car is high mileage at 138,000. Some people claim a Honda isn't "broken in " till about 200,000 miles. Also most BEV owners charge their cars at home at night. The supercharger network is mainly a big convenience when traveling.
@ELITEDEMON9912 жыл бұрын
Wouldn’t worry about the mileage, my neighbours got a model x, 150k on the clock, next to zero service costs, and it’s still on its original brakes.

I would recommend you to try the Model S P85+ , same age, it has a Mercedes AGM setup (the + only), so it is more fun to drive.

You hit the nail on the head, Performance without drama is not enough?it would be like making love without 4 play or getting drunk at the flick of switch.I personally think is all about how you get there.
@JakeJoris2 жыл бұрын
If you didn't know, Teslas have an insane/ludicrous mode, which is much faster than the sport mode. The model s p85d(the slowest one) is supposed to do a 0-60 in 4.2sec.

Great open minded review. I can’t think why you didn’t go to use a supercharger but you must have had a reason to make life as difficult as possible for yourself. The sound that you like from a petrol engine is the sound of parts wearing and cost building. Change to an ev, won’t regret it.

I think he just didn't know how to charge the car. it would have been nice if someone had told him what to do instead of waiting to the last minute to find out. but maybe that was just to make the video more exciting.
@aaronshornyk83682 жыл бұрын
Fantastic video, I think at this minute in time most of us have contemplated going electric its just the constant range anxiety that would do me....its bad enough when the Mrs takes the car and empties the tank and doesn't fill it! Imagine that with an electric car....you have a full hour to argue about it while its on charge 😂😂

I’ve lived with a lower range EV (BMW i3) for two years without a garage. In those two years I was always thinking about where my next charging opportunity was going to come from. I now have a garage so I can charge overnight and the experience is night and day. I wake up with a full battery and give it no thought. With the infrastructure being what it is, as much as I love EVs, I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone who doesn’t have access to off street parking. But if you can charge it at night then I think that they are brilliant.

@@ewadge mate it's really not as bad as you make it sound no offence. My brother in law is a Uber driver and charges twice a day, for some one like him yes I too wouldn't recommend and Ev unless home charging is possible. But for the average Joe like me once a week charging is nothing unless you purchase a non efficient low range Ev. I've got Hyundai Kona 64kw and my only headache is waiting while it charges. I got low patience barrier 😂

So does the Tesla have a break peddle or just an accelerator pedal?

my old P85 had a slight noise on the motor and had 90000 miles and they replaced the motor under warranty

The first mistake made was not plugging the car in overnight at home using the granny charger (any 3 pin socket). Charges at 3kw and would've topped you up about 50%. Highly convenient and most likely cheaper then Ikea. Second mistake was not driving to the red dot charger at Newport Pagnell. That is a Tesla Supercharger and you'd probably get free charging if you were sold a car with free supercharging.
@honesty_-no9he2 жыл бұрын
The recent TESLAs have a CHILL MODE so when you bring friends who are not used to heavy regen you can ease them into the experience. Then go into sport mode when you want to show off 0-60. CHILL MODE is also good for around town driving and saves energy thus extending or retaining range. I also suspect that when you have been in a TESLA as a passenger your carhead friends are more likely to have maxed out Performance versions and frankly I agree that level can make anyone sick. So standard and long range versions of TESLAs are a better choice they are fast enough and cost way less than the Performance versions.

Even if you plug into a standard outlet at home/work, that would get you through the week easily. You would charge slowly over night but you would get like 30-40 miles of range in a night

Battery lifespan of early Teslas of this vintage was much lower than your have from a modern example. This was early tech. Modern Model 3 are built to have a lifespan of 1 million miles.
