Another great video, thanks Richard. I have a 2018 MS, my mate has a 2021 M3 LR . I have driven them both and been driven in both as passenger. You just hit all the key points so beautifully for both cars. My MS is on 19s and I indeed get about 10% more range than the MS in the video. Can't touch my mate's M3 though, it is amazing for economy. I don't know how you survived on MCU1 which was on my car when I bought it from Tesla. I used to regularly drive off the 'map' and be on a blank white screen, especially on the less travelled roads like the A361 in your video. The MCU 2 upgrade fixed that and now I enjoy the screen the way it was intended. I think the car struggled on 3G but works properly on 4G connectivity. Back to the 2 cars, the MS is significantly bigger in the back which is pivotal for me for when I carry my son, his 'ample' wife and our granddaughter in a child seat. Rear width is so important for us (and clearly for my son...). For me it is MS all the way.

Great video as always and nice comparison. We have a Model S here in Australia. It's an older 2015 85D with free supercharging/connectivity, MCU2 upgrade and CCS charging. Brilliant car, fantastic for Mountain bike riding and camping it's unbelievable how much storage space it has. It's only downside is it's external size, but we live in a fairly rural area and are picky where we park. We sometimes have to park a bit further away to avoid door dings, but have always done that with any car we've owned anyway.

I have an S85 RWD and an M3P. They're entirely different cars and I love that. There is a sense of plushness about the S. Our M3 is the daily and it's great around town and you don't need the Performance really. But each time I get back in the S, generally on the weekend for trips to Ikea, put our bikes on the roof, or just out for dinner. The S is not as fast, but it has more panache and still looks like the $150,000 we spent on it. The airsuspension, sunroof, seats, carbon fibre dash and heads up just complete it. They also don't look like an Uber.

I prefer the Model S. Looks, feel, presence, driving dynamics (the model 3 is a sportier drive, but the weight of the S makes it feel much more stable. I don't like the way it feels when a semi truck is next to you in the model 3). The sound system, the center pod behind the steering wheel, the hatch.....the model S was designed to be a better, more luxury experience and it shows. To be fair....I'm biased. I own a 2014 Model S. I'll be moving on from it in 2024 to buy a newer, used P100D or 100D. I'm hooked and am addicted to my free supercharging and free data. With that said, early 2017, late 2016 cars are my target for the next one.

Which one would I prefer ? Probably the MS, though I do have fairly limited personal experience of one. I have driven a couple of M3s (LRs both), and generally agree with your opinion. However, my buddy from Netherlands brought over to FC Live his 2023 M3 Std, and I was surprised how forgiving his suspension was. The car still steered very nimbly, was very comfortable and the seats were fine, though the headrest did hit me in the back of the head until I inclined the seat far back enough - something I hadn't noticed before. It was great once set properly. And another thing - this was the first M3 Std I'd been a passenger in where the owner had stomped on, err... demonstrated the performance. And whaddya know? The slow Tesla isn't that slow. In fact it's pretty bloody quick. And the overall efficiency beats my ID3 P-Pro. I can get there in mine, but the M3 can do it all day. Really nice car. Like practically everyone realises once they get in one. 😊

I have both in the family MS 2016 facelift and M3P 2020 and i did drove both for long trips (5000+ KMs roundtrips from Netherlands) and I must say that S is a better cruiser indeed, but it has 2 major drawbacks compared to Model 3: missing door pockets (with kids is a big deal) and the fact that you need to cary the CCS adapter and make sure not to loose it every time you charge. On the other hand M3 charges faster on V3 superchargers but at higher speeds (over 120KM/h) the windnoise is pretty loud compared to the S. But i must say I enjoyed driving both precisely because they are different. Hope it helps somebody!

I owned a 2018 model 3 lr for 3 years and I loved the efficiency and speed & clarity of the infotainment system. I currently own a 2017 100d and love the hatchback feature & smoothness of the suspension. Those are my two biggest observations and I certainly prefer the model s over the 3 now. I used to own manyyyyyy BMWs before and the model 3 tried to imitate the handling as much as possible but wasn't quite there yet. You can feel each and every bump on the road which is somewhat expected from a sporty car but you'll never feel a jarring bump in a bmw 3.

Well, it's July '24 & I just found this video of the fantastic MS100D I bought from Richard a year ago! I love the car, especially this one with the Obsidian paint job, the trick suspension which remembers where you lifted and especially the 21's which look brilliant. You might have noted the little after-market carbon boot spoiler the first owner added, which looks great too. It's a superb ride, quiet and comfortable and the economy/range is better than I need (over 11K miles, it has cost me around 2.5 p per mile when charging at home on Octopus Go). The Superchargers are more of course but it's less than 10% of my mileage. I looked at MYs both new and used and couldn't find anything that matched the S. I believe that good ones will age well and become a classic. So glad I bought it and very happy to see it featured in the video.

Great video Rich. Model S was/is my choice out of the two. The S has the looks, the hatch, the closer normal car feel (not just a single screen), portrait mode (I prefer for all but watching video), more space …and did I mention looks? 😜 However, the 3 is not a huge compromise. I’ve not had the pleasure of driving the performance or long range 3 but my SR model 3 experience was better than expected. Steering felt more solid, interior felt better built, less rattles, less noise, good economy and faster charging at a supercharger. I did pick a model S with a pretty high spec though and premium interior plus UHF sound were a must for me. I’d need at least the LR model 3 to keep me musically happy. I could live with a LR model 3 …but I’ll always look more fondly at an S (beauty and beast) 😎

Great comparison. On a similar theme, I've been thinking of replacing my 2018 Model X with a Model Y. The main thing that's keeping me from doing this is I've got free Supercharging on my X. I'm also a bit worried that I'll miss some of the quality features in the X such as auto door closing, soft closing, 2nd screen, and the large front windscreen. Also I think the X is also just a better quality car. The reasons for getting a Y would be having a new car and warranty, better efficiency.and upgraded chip and screen (although no issues yet with my X). Edit: over the lifetime of my X I'm getting around 350wh/mile which I don't think is too bad for such a big, heavy car.

@TraderJono Жыл бұрын
@@raheeb1 I have completed my comparison! There are positives for both. I will not be switching at this point I still believe I have the right car. I have listed the positives of each by comparison. M3P 1. Better handling on country roads, the steering is more "direct" at higher speeds. It's a small difference but enough to notice 2. Narrower and more nimble this goes with the above point. The M3 really does do better on English tight country roads. 3. M3P tech is slightly better even though most of it is in my car which is 8 years older! The infotainment system is snappier albeit all the same features. It has the Ryzen chip making it quicker to load things and fewer freeze moments. 4. The big arm rest is very nice and better than the pre 2021 (US plaid) MS however I will say I like that my pre 2016 MS has a big open space in front of the arm rests because I put my daily work bag there and I always keep my car clean because I don't have much storage to dump crap in! I genuinely feel fortunate to have the option of not having extra storage which I could add whenever I wanted to. 5. For those who like storage the M3 comes with the traditional door bins and the pockets on the back of the front seats 6. The M3P feels like a sports car when driving at high speeds, going round sharp bends and accelerating hard out of them. 7. What I like about the M3P is one moment I can be driving super efficiently because the M3 efficiency is sooo good especially over my MS. And then the next moment driving like a rally driver on country roads 🤣 the contrast is awesome 8. This M3P has the newest autopilot whereas my 2015 MS has AP1. One thing I did notice I couldn't use my wheel weight to do hands off driving on the M3P whereas on on the MS I can be hands off for hours 😆 I know I shouldn't use one but I do because the amount of times I don't see the "keep hands on warnings" and get kicked off AP for the rest of the trip was getting annoying. I still keep my hand gently on the wheel I promise 😜 Model S P90DL positives in comparison 1. Launch mode is so good I was very underwhelmed with manually launching the M3P it takes a split moment for the power to really kick in which imo loses some of the fun but then again I'm used to my P90D. 2. Ride comfort in the MS with it's air suspension is noticeably better it effectively floats over the roads, pot holes and because of it's width it also moves over most speed bumps with a lot more ease and I don't have to slow down so much unlike the M3P. The smart air suspension feature I'm the MS is very much appreciated. 3. The boot hatch and boot space is so good in the MS I forgot how much I appreciated it. I once drove a M3 SR+ for a week and I had to take my wheel off the bike to fit it in the boot. Whereas the model S it'll fit in no problem. 4. I know this is a vanity point but I get way more "looks" in the MS than I did in any of the M3s I drove. 5. The tech in any MS that came with the premium packages like subzero, lighting etc are now only just recently matched by the M3P 2022 onwards because previously it didn't have the heated steering wheel which now experiencing having one in my MS I don't know how I lived life without it before Tesla 🤣 6. My high fidelity sound system is better than the premium one in the M3P 7. This one's opinion however the MS looks better from the front and the back 😬 8. The MS even as old as mine still feels like I'm driving a more premium car whereas the M3P does feel really nice but not quite as luxurious, in fact I can't quite put my finger on it. 9. Less phantom braking on my MS. AP1 isn't as jumpy in stop and start traffic or brakes randomly as the new version sometimes does.

Anybody any tips or guidance on this, is there a battery and drive chain health check or diagnostics I could get done?
@mondotv4216 Жыл бұрын
There is a self diagnosis you can run through the app (but apparently doesn't work for everyone) and on the Model3/Y there is also a service menu where you can run a physical charge and discharge test (doesn't help with the Model S). There's also Tessie which is a paid subscription app that details your batteries health and overall range. There are also a number of providers offering pre purchase EV battery evaluations. Some require an OBD dongle which is a problem on a Tesla. The other method is a simple range test. Charge the vehicle to full and see what range it says you have. Drive it around for say 10% of the battery - some mixed driving, motorway and city. Multiply the number of miles by 10 and see how much range you would have got from full to empty then check it against comparable vehicles.

I test drove a Y ( no appetite for a 54k new car)….test drove a model 3, nice but not worth it for a new nor used one (used are more expensive than new 😅). For a 3.9 sec first time EV that’s cheaper than a new Camry but was north of $94k new…it was a no brainer….I drive 2k miles a month. MCU is fast enough, next year I may plop $2250 on MCU2….but as is I charge at home and although I wish I found the performance version I am very satisfied with everything.

I have used / owned both of these and my preference would be the S, but not with that awful wood dash they put in it (alcantara or carbon fibre all the way - I think Richard still converts these?). The 3 has a more modern interior and the screen functionality is better, it has sharper handling and is easier to drive around town and park. The 3 also has faster charging and a heat pump. The S though has a much better exterior look (with chrome delete and bigger 21" wheels), and the ride comfort is much better, especially on the later performance Raven models. If you are just getting I to EV's then the S will be less of a jump and is more conventional, the 3 is modern and will appeal to a person who likes minimalism.

Larger wheels increase the area in contact with the road. This increases the rolling resistance. In turn this increases the amount of power required to move the car. This reduces efficiency. Likewise larger tires are usually performance based for extra grip over the (smaller) standard wheel / tires designed for efficiency at the cost of grip. Larger tires are also often more expensive as a byproduct. Larger tires and sports ties as well can reduce efficiency (even on gas cras) quite significantly. Combine the two and it's a double hit.
@Ben-gm9lo Жыл бұрын
Richard does cover that in the video. He reckons about 10% efficiency loss with the 21s vs the 19s.

One thing that doesn't seem to have been mentioned in the comments is that the Model S doesn't always have CCS charging so you either need to have the car upgraded, or use an adapter to use V3 Superchargers, or third party chargers such as Ionity.
@patriciazoerner Жыл бұрын
Are you kidding me? Tesla's supercharger network is leagues ahead of any of the ccs networks and is vastly more reliable than any other charging network. (Of course, I am speaking of the US charging network. Are things different in the UK and Europe?)
@peterwilliamson1825 Жыл бұрын
@@patriciazoerner Yes. In Europe the Model 3 and Y only have CCS. V2 Superchargers have two leads, the original Tesla lead AND CCS. However V3 Superchargers only have CCS leads. Hence, my comment that to rapid charge an original Model S or X anywhere other than a V2 SC, you either need to use an adapter or pay for the CCS update. It's not a big deal, it just hadn't already been mentioned.

I totally agree with you about the negative points of Model 3. Lack of hatchback functionality and poor seats. Actually these are some of the most important necessities. Regarding minimalist design, I am very happy with one single touchscreen 😀 Anyway, I have 2022 M3 LFP. Can drive about 440 km. I manage the trunk. But next car must definitely be an electric SUV. Even I like sedans

I have a question about 100d and 90d a charging test . Is any different between ? Both 17,18 plate and also any option to found do they come with free supercharge the same year? Can check in any website or anywhere?

The only thing I've found in my S that is actually inferior compared to the 3 is that it can't reasonably be tracked as both motor and brakes overheat quicker. But the plaid seems to fix that too.

I have the s75d and looking at the s100. Is it worth spending the extra money or just keep the s75? My 75 is 2017 and the s100 is 2018

I have a Model,3 LR and love it, but the proportions of the S are in my opinion more pleasing. The S also has the liftback and more comfortable suspension. Those two features let the M3 down.

Why suggest to put Mountainbikes in the back/boot of your car? Just get a Thule bike rack for the back. You'd get a ton of mess and scratches inside the car, pushing a whole MTB inside. Tesla is one of the few EVs that actually come with Trailer hitches. Great video and comparisons though. Good information overall!
@audiovideophile5317 Жыл бұрын
I was very disappointed that the 3 didn't come with a liftgate. The truck was a huge disappointment. Many felt like this as can be seen by the initial reveal and how everyone complained how small the trunk opening was so incredibly small that Tesla had to redesign the whole back end of the car to get the opening somehow bigger. That said I went with a fully specked out 3, including Full Self Driving which was (only) $6,000US at the time. I considered a used 3 in similar price territory but none existed w/ HW3 2 years ago.

EXcellent! And what would the trip cost in a similar ICE executive express..... 150 miles in a 450HP AWD? I am guessing about £50 in fuel...
@StephaneDubois-ie3tb Жыл бұрын
I have owned both and except from the price of the 2 2nd hand EVs you are comparing it is absolutely not the same category of cars... If you don't need the extra space and don't mind about the minimalism TM3 is absolutely brilliant. TMS is a pure beauty and the prices of 2nd hand is so low now... I would prefer 19", MCU2 and ccs adapter TMS. My personal choice would be TMS for big trips and family and TM3 for commuting 😅

The fast charging of our 2019 MS vs a 2021 M3 LR is very different. I charged 400 km in less time than it took me to order a burger, finish my food and go back to the parking lot. I can not remember experiencing such high speeds with the MS.
@StephaneDubois-ie3tb Жыл бұрын
@@garyanderton TM3 supercharging is about 30% faster 30min vs 42min for 10%->80%. I haven't noticed such a big inconvenience for that after all supercharging is not my everyday usage. But if you are planning to supercharge a lot that is definitely a good point

The Model S is a marvel in car design - still looks good 10 years in while having some of the lowest drag of any car on the market. Other brands struggle to get near this low of a drag with everything from average to hideous design! Only issue with the Model S imo is that the visibility is questionable, especially through the back window. But you can have the backup camera on at all times.

You should mention how the 2023 models (including ones built as of October 2022) model 3s (and Y’s) got c on comfort dampers.

Re the seats, I found on my test drives that the Tesla seat bases are much too narrow and were giving me incredible discomfort after only a few minutes. I'm not wide, 6'5 but only 85kgs, but the seats were unbearable. Went with the i4 in the end which I'm actually pleased I did, it's a much nicer car in pretty much every way imo.

ID7 GTX any day over either. Not that I can afford any.
@dougowt Жыл бұрын
I would go for the S every time. As you say the extra information from the two displays. Easier to use controls. The 3 has just too many functions operated from the centre screen. The comfort levels on a long journey are amongst the best of any car. And why the 3 was not produced as a hatch is a mystery! I like the external dimensions and efficiency of the 3, but it needs better seats, a better ride, a second screen or heads up display. If they did a model 3 estate (I don't like SUVs) with these tweaks, I'd seriously be looking at changing. But for now the 85D is staying or rather its coming down to Italy with me.

Great video thanks. Personally, I find myself drawn to the Model S and X. There's an undeniable allure about their looks and the presence they command on the road, even though I've yet to drive the Model 3. Recently, I've embarked on the task of finding a new car to replace my old ML63. During this search, I've had the opportunity to test drive both the Model X and Y. Of the two, the Model X provided a ride that was far superior. The Model Y, on the other hand, offered a ride that felt comparable to strapping a skateboard to my teeth. Given that I own bikes and dogs, a hatchback is a necessity for me. Thus, the ride and boot access are critical factors. Unfortunately, if these don't meet my requirements, it becomes a deal breaker

I have a 3, I could see me maybe trading for an S. Drove one as a loaner. Biggest deficit probably charging speed on top of efficiency for a long drive. Needs more electricity and takes it in slower. M3 definitely better suited to the roads near me.
