Deventer is a city you should visit too! On the first sunday of august there is a huge bookmarket, its actually the largest in europe! Deventer also has historical bouldings that look really cool! Tip: watch out for the fatbikes and bikers cuz they likely go way to fast or are busy on their phone.

Excellent advice that I couldn't agree with more. A few years ago I took a solo bike tour starting in Amsterdam. My route: Amsterdam>Utrecht>Breda>Antwerp>Ghent>Bruges>Ouddorp>Delft>Rotterdam>Dordrecht>Gouda>Leiden>The Hague>Gouda>Amsterdam. This was more than I had planned but I enjoyed exploring the cities so much I ended up taking some detours. I stayed with locals along the way using an organization called Frienden op de Fiets. It was a wonderful experience.

Nice list, but... If you like typical Dutch 17th-century cities within an hour of Amsterdam, I would definitely add Haarlem and Alkmaar to this list. A little further than an hour, but definitely worth it: Dordrecht and Zwolle. But Groningen, Leeuwarden, Middelburg, 's Hertogenbosch, Nijmegen and Maastricht are also definitely worth exploring. The Netherlands is so much more than Amsterdam...!
@jarmoliebrand200519 күн бұрын
The thing with all the cities on this list being an hour away from Amsterdam is that most do feel 'Hollands'. But there are other Dutch cities with fewer canals and such and more other things. I could recommend the cities on this list, but personally, I'd swap out a few here or there.
@boudewijnkerkwijk46953 ай бұрын
I sort of agree this is the top 7, but why not make it a top 10 and include Groningen, Zwolle and Deventer?! It also really depends what you're looking for, Rotterdam is a unique city in NL, so are Utrecht and The Hague. Appreciate Amersfoort at #2, great choice having grown up there lol

All amazing cities. I would add Hoorn, Deventer, Zwolle, and Alkmaar. For the best one, it's a tie between Leiden (so damn pretty) and Rotterdam (the energy, the feeling of space, the contrast with Amsterdam's Disney-ish prettiness) for me.

One hundred per cent agree as a Dutchy. The majority of Dutch cities have beautiful medieval / 17th-century style architecture. I'd highly recommend skipping Amsterdam. I visit our dreaded capital only once per 4 years or so and every time I am reminded there are many alternatives (that don't come with the perpetual smell of weed in the atmosphere). Myself being from Zwolle, which has beautiful medieval buildings that date back to the time it was part of the Hanseatic League.
@jarmoliebrand200519 күн бұрын
I really don't feel drawn to Amsterdam. It's large, loud and overbearing. It's beautiful in terms of architecture, but to me, the vibes aren't there. Recently been to Haarlem and I loved that. And I've also visited Zwolle twice and it's among my favourite cities in the country. Greetings from Nijmegen.

Rented a home in Scheveningen for 2 weeks as i first time to Europe ever trip with family coming to see new Dutch extended family(😉). Visited Delft, Rotterdam, Dordrecht, Haarlem, Kinderdijk and of course Amsterdam. We took the one hour boat tour around the AMS's canals and that was all we loved about the city basicaly (people picking up fights in the street and Huge tourists crowds were a big turn off...). Always were happy to get back to Scheveningen after going anywhere else even the nicest cities, the beach vibe, the haven and more relax atmosphere is quite magical! We defenitely coming to NL een andere keer 💯.

There are many more beautiful cities a bit further away. It's a very small country so most cities are within 2 or 2.5 hours from Amsterdam or Utrecht. You're definitely limiting yourself by only choosing cities that are an hour away from Amsterdam. I could really recommend: - Haarlem: Yes, this one's near Amsterdam. Whilst Amsterdam is the capital city, Haarlem is the capital of the province of Noord-Holland. I only visited for the first time recently but it immediately cemented itself as one of my favourite cities. The canals are scenic. The Teylers museum gets my recommendation and the Bavo church looks great from within and on the outside. - Nijmegen: As a Nijmegenaar, I'll recommend my own city. The allies actually bombed Nijmegen in the second world war, which unfortunately destroyed the medieval city centre and the old train station. It's still a gorgeous city though. It's situated nicely next to the Waal and... It's the oldest city in the country, with a lot of Roman history as well (it was part of the Limes) - Maastrict: Perhaps my favourite city in the country. I don't like the feel of really big cities and Maastricht is not that big. It's just a nice place to be. And I love myself some book stores inside of an old church. Maastricht is situated in the southeast of the country, near Belgium and Germany. So this is probably one of the least typically Dutch Dutch cities, which I find refreshing. There's more to our country's cities than just canals. Maastricht also claims to be the oldest city in the country... But... C'mon guys... It's Nijmegen :) - Zwolle: Zwolle quickly became one of my favourite cities in the country. Just a great place to be. I feel like there's a nice blend of modern and historical. With museum de Fundatie and the Sassenpoort, for example. - Groningen: Groningen has a great feel to it. And the Martinitoren and Akerk are beautiful. Plus, it really felt like a city with a university while I was there. More so than many other cities with universities. - Den Bosch: If you want to visit a city in Noord-Brabant, I'd recommend Den Bosch. Breda is also neat. Eindhoven is not my thing at all but if you like modern and techy things, give it a visit. And just kind of avoid Tilburg for the most part, lol. Treat yourself to a Bosche Bol from Jan de Groot.

Zuid-Holland: Delft, Leiden, Gouda, Den haag, Rotterdam, Schiedam, Kinderdijk, Brielle. Zeeland: Middelburg, Zierikzee, Vlissingen, Veere Utrecht: Utrecht, Amersfoort. Noord-Brabant (or Brabant for short): S’-Hertogenbosch, Breda, Bergen op Zoom. Flevoland: Nothing special, maybe Urk (was a village island is now part of land). Friesland: Leeuwarden, Sneek, Franeker (has worlds first Planetarium). Groningen: Groningen, Bourtange (famous star shaped fortress city) Drenthe: not a city but has the Hunnebedden (boulder dome graves). Netherlands oldest structure from 4000 bc. Overijssel: Zwolle, Kampen, Deventer. Gelderland: Nijmegen (Netherlands oldest City), Zutphen, Hattem, Arnhem, Elburg Limburg: Maastricht (second oldest city Netherlands), Sittard.
