About Us.
Byther Farm is a small organic homestead, being designed and managed using permaculture practices. We aim for self-sufficiency in fruit and vegetables for increased self reliance and better resilience to the modern world. I recognise that we are unlikely to be truly self sufficient, but do the best we can. I share our home with my loving husband, Mr J and our cat, Monty.
We are a fifty-something couple who live on a smallholding in Carmarthenshire, Wales. We are going green and creating a gentler, cleaner and more healthy life for our family.
Having had a highly successful smallholding in Monmouthshire, we hope to recreate the abundance at our new home. There will be a large organic kitchen garden with no dig gardening raised beds and young food forest in which to grown our fruit and vegetables.
We keep a few sheep and Aylesbury ducks.

I don't like kneeling so I have a low stool to sit and weed.

What a gorgeous backdrop! It's a wonder you can turn your gaze from it long enough to weed!!! Your gardens are so lovely and inspiring.

When I'm organized I go weeding with my garden belt, which has all the things I might need for any weed. The trouble is I'm not very often organized! It definitely makes jobs faster and more enjoyable when you take the right things for the right job out with you!

Hi Liz I find that if I get a 'harvest' from my weeding then it brings joy and I love getting out there to weed! If I'm harvesting for a compost pile, to give greens to my chickens or discovering volunteers (I discovered some orach seedlings just this morning!!) then I feel rewarded and weeding is so much more enjoyable. My go to tool for weeding is my trusty sickle! Thanks for sharing 😊

My favourite tool for weeding is a Niwaki hori hori knife - brilliant. I know I have started my gardening season when out comes my little camping stool in February and I sit by the gooseberry bushes and steadily prune them!

Fascinating to find little trees popping up as gifts from visiting birds or arriving with the wind (plentiful supply in Yorkshire this “summer” ). I have a little cherry that is a similar size to your’s. Locally there are both ornamental and edible cherries, do you have any hints on how one can identify which is which?
