1. Settled by Europeans in the 17th century and officially declared a state in 1820, Maine is known for its chilly winters. Blanketed in forests, and bordered on one side by thousands of miles of coastline, the state is full of wonders both natural and human-made. For thousands of years, indigenous peoples were the only inhabitants of the territory that is now Maine. The first European settlement in the area was by the French in 1604 on Saint Croix Island, by Pierre Dugua, Sieur de Mons. As Maine entered the 18th century, only a half dozen European settlements had survived.
2. Maine has its own desert, which spans 40 acres outside the town of Freeport. Though its silt hills are now a popular tourist attraction, the desert originally developed as a result of over-farming in the area.
3. Maine is nicknamed “The Pine Tree State.” The tree appears on the state flag, and, as of 2012, a full 89 percent of the state was covered in forest, making it the most tree-covered state in the US.
4. Maine has a ton of quirky museums, including the telephone museum in Ellsworth, the Maine Coast Sardine History Museum in Jonesport, the Umbrella Cover Museum in Portland, and perhaps most famously, the International Cryptozoology Museum (also in Portland), dedicated to the study of “hidden” or “unknown” animals like Yetis, Bigfoot, and Lake Monsters.
5. Maine is known as “The Birthplace of Prohibition.” The state was the first to ban the sale and manufacture of alcohol in 1851 (although the law was repealed five years later), and in 1880, Portland Mayor Neal Dow, sometimes called the “Father of Prohibition,” ran for president on the Prohibition Party ticket.
6. European contact with what is now called Maine started around 1200 CE when Norwegians interacted with the native Penobscot in present-day Hancock County, most likely through trade. About 200 years earlier, from the settlements of Iceland and Greenland, Norwegians had discovered America and attempted to settle areas such as Newfoundland, but failed to establish a permanent settlement there. Archeological evidence suggests that Norwegians in Greenland returned to North America for several centuries after the initial discovery to collect timber and to trade, with the most relevant evidence being the Maine Penny, a 10th-century Norwegian coin found at a Native American dig site in 1954.
7. The first capital of Maine was Portland. It was established as the village of Casco in 1632, thus making it one of the oldest cities in the US. Today Portland is the state’s largest city. But Portland didn’t remain a capital for long. Just 12 years after Maine became a state, the capital was moved to Augusta. This is an even older city, having been established in 1629 as Cushnoc in an area that was a hotbed of Native American hostilities towards European settlements.

You almost got it right on the desert of Maine. It's not considered "man made". The glacial silt is naturally occurring. However, due to over farming and not turning over soil for the crops the glacial silt was exposed little by little by the Tuttle family until it covered 40 acres and they abandoned the farm.

What I meant in the video is pretty much what you said. The silt was already there, so that part is natural. But exposing it was the fault of that family. Without human activity, that land wouldn't have turned into what it is today. So that part is man made. Thanks for going deeper into the subject, Ali. I canoed the Allagash Riven in 1975 when I was stationed in Brunswick NAS. Maine really isn’t that big. The county I live in is 2/3 the size of Maine. My son is 1/2 Maniac.

An interesting fact that may have been nice to put in here, is the fact that Maine, despite being considered a leader in the lobster industry, has no Red Lobster restaurants in it. It's kind of ironic when you think about it.

I'm a born and raised Mainer. My husband (deckhand) has told me that Maine and Massachusetts has been overfished for seafood and that the wildlife numbers are decreasing because of that. The few leftover creatures are seeking food more north towards Canada, where the waters are obviously colder and because of this the creatures are dying off. Overfishing is a problem in New England and it isn't going to slow down until residents and TOURISTS realize and accept it. Yes, we are known for our lobster and crab meat, but you have to understand how many people come to demand this. The supply is running out. A Maine Lobster isn't worth the $21.00 you pay to boil and eat it, and the dozens of crabs that go into one little tiny container of meat is just sad. This obsessive tourism is killing Maine's oceanic wildlife.

Stephen King lives in Bangor, Maine. There are a lot of elderly people in Maine. Maine loves seafood very much. In York, Maine, there are so many villages called York, they are simply known as " the yorks", along with York Beach and York harbor. York is Maine's oldest settlement. Some of York's oldest buildings are still standing today and date back to the colonial era. Maine's population is around 1 million people. Maine's blueberry field's are red.That's because the autumn leaves fall on them. causing them to change color. The fields are known as the fields of fire and they date back to the Native Americans. There is also cutting them. This event happenns every two years in order to have a simulation of new plant growth. Maine is made up of 400 islands and has around 60 lighthouses. The Calender Islands in Casco Bay were mountains until glaicers and seas of melting ice had crushed them. Harbor Island used to be Horse Island and had a dark history. The island's cemetary was completely destroyed. Some people had moved out of Harbor Island. A sand bar in Maine is known for The Perfect Storm which it happened on October 31, 1991. Mohegan Island has a history of ships and waves crashing on it. Cobscook bay's fishing pens are surrounded by green water and form a perfect square. Salmon has been prominent since the '80s. The first lighthouse to be built in Maine is the Portland Headlight. Construction began in 1790 and is located in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Bangor played a big role in timber trade. That's what I know about Maine.

The average age in Maine is in fact very high. As of 2018, Maine held the record with 20.6% of the population being 65 and older. The next highest was Florida at 20.5%. Many believe its due to younger individuals leaving Maine for better paying jobs out of state. Nonetheless, Maine is one of the best places to live in my opinion. 🌲

also "coos" canyon in maine had a gold rush just like California and Alaska .. the story goes a indian hired a town to shovel dirt from the river into a Sluice Box for gold..also we have a inactive volcanoe in maine at baxter park..and alot of maine is protected by land owners for the critters here like moose bears deer and whatnot but we have 500 miles of coastline here..i live more near the canada line where there isnt big malls, closest one might be 50 miles away..love living here ..just the critters and the trees and good people that still stop for some one on the side of the road and ask if you need help if they happen across you on a road with your hood up. 😁😁👍👍

Although this video is 3yrs old, it will certainly require an update after I'm through rearranging some things. First, I am granted a vast amount of territory by the United States and I'll be choosing to acquire a great deal of Maine. The land will be removed from US jurisdiction and transferred to me. That sounds awful boastful but really no different than owning the phone in your pocket. Anyhow, the current residential citizens of the United States there will automatically be granted sovereign residence within the new nation. The indigenous Native American tribes/nations that have domain rights within the territory will continue to have sovereignty and infact it will be expanded to include a true voice and stature in governance. Passamaquoddy and Maliseet have my particular focus at this time but territory may expand. The situation north of the border into Quebec Canada is also of importance and negotiations for inclusion might gain ground, we'll see. Tax is a bad memory and an outdated system of control... it'll be removed. I'm not proposing to discuss or implement a new system of control but rather a pathway to honest and smaller governing. The people will have liberty absolute. This is in no way an attempt to create the Chaz/Chop craziness in other parts of the US, it is also not succession... it's private territory via adjudicated processes with the United States. Our presence is not adversarial with the US but rather a partnership with it and the global community as a tax free trade zone, a doorway to the world's goods. Well, that's a little primer into the future geographic alterations I'm involved in that might just include your input and concerns. ~HRP

I was raised in Presque Isle, Maine and lived there till I was 29 years old then I moved to Oxford, Maine to take care of my sick Grandmother. When I was 32 years old I hit the hell out of Maine. I am 46 years old now and I am going back to Maine to visit family and my friends this summer. I for one don't like Maine. It is to cold for me.

I live in Pennsylvania now were there is more then two summer months June and July then fall starts in August. I remembered it snowed one Halloween. I remembered it snowed while the farmers were harvesting the potatoes. Ya, I will pick Pennsylvania over Maine any day but, I do miss my family and my friends that still live in Maine. I do have fond memories of Maine like when I was growing up on the farm. We had over ten Acres of land and one Acre had flowers planted on it because the former owners of the house had a greenhouse and florist shop as a businesses. That's were my love for flowers and plants came from. I what to school for horticulture and I took a side side course in animal husbandry. I really don't think I would have taken those courses if I had not been raised were I was in Maine.

I live in Maine. I hope everyone that lives here or visits goes to the Maine.gov site. In the search bar type Safety when eating fish in Maine. The fish are poison. Don't eat the fish in Maine.
