When I was trying to trace my ancestry several years ago, I found a multiple great grandfather's name of Hugh McCrary that said he immigrated from The Isle of Mann in around the mid 1700s to Pennsylvania in the USA. But another account said he immigrated from Ireland. So, who knows?? If anyone knows of any McCrarys from the Isle of Mann, it would be nice if you could verify that it's possible my ancestor came from there.
@supersavingsgreenmama21315 жыл бұрын
My family comes from Isle of Mann. My DNA showed me as 80% welsh 20% Scottish and Irish and their last name was Smith. My Great Grandma wore a broach with a purple amethyst set in silver and we all were given kilts as children. Let me tell ya that sprouted plenty of questions at school lol. She also said which clans we were from I don't know what that means and we have a family cress I also don't know what that means I just recall her talking about it. My Great Grandfather was a stone cutter and they moved to the US late 1800s. My Father was a fisherman and I grew up eating fish now I see why lol. Apparently it's my heritage. I also love potatoes anyway they're cooked! Delicious. I wonder if Smith is a common name over there. This DNA stuff is fascinating I'll tell ya. I know we are part of the Kneen family because that's my Aunts first name on my Mothers side and my maiden name was Morris on my Fathers also a common name there. I don't see Smith on any lists though but who knows they could have changed it when they came to the states.

Yes, but still.. That means that, for their size, they are making way more money than one might expect.
@michaelgusovsky6 жыл бұрын
why do you say that, sebastian? it seems like the very smallest countries have the highest gdp per capita: www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/rankorder/2004rank.html i would expect the larger a country is, the harder it is to manage from a governance standpoint, and therefore there would be more waste and inefficiency in government, and thus the GDP would suffer.
@SebastiansFacts6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree. A smaller country is, or should be easier to manage. But on the other hand having less resources, population and even surface area means that you'll have a harder time attracting new businesses and investors, and less people to hire. The waste of public money and inefficiency will also count a lot more, since you have a smaller budget. So you actually have to be a lot more efficient to manage and exploit what little you have. In bigger countries, that waste might have less impact, since there's more money. You can also diversify your economy more easily. And yes, there's a lot of expenses, but the revenues will also be big. So, from where I'm standing, it's actually not very easy to manage a small country and make it prosper. Which is a testament to the great work these small countries are doing. It's also true that the "big guys" always grab our attention in the media, the classrooms, etc. But we tend to ignore the small countries because .. they're small. So that's also probably why we're kinda surprised when we discover just how well most of them are doing. Anyway, that's just my opinion.
corny? it comes from the coat of arms, here is segment from Wikipedia, basic research you clearly could not be bothered to undertake. "The origin of the triskeles (three dexter legs conjoined at the hips and flexed in triangle) is obscure, but appears to stem from the Scottish takeover of the island in 1265."
