You are soooo right. This was my first year planting seeds and starting a garden. I got trigger happy and started too many seeds and ran out of space to put them that i had to buy a whole bunch of grow bags to compensate. Then these plants that went into the garden bed became GIANTS and and i had a hard time managing them due to bad positioning on my end. They were easy when they were small but i had no idea they were going to become so HUGE. Lesson learned. Thanks for the video.

I love your videos. Always a lot of information in a short format. This year I told myself that I was not going to put out as many tomato plants as last year because I was drowning in tomatoes. Well guess what, it happened again. I started my own seeds for the first time this year and really didn't expect they would do very well, but they did. I gave some to my son for his garden but couldn't bring myself to destroy the extras so I planted them. UGH I am again drowning in tomatoes. I have given to friends and taken to the local homeless shelter and still too many. Hopefully I will remember this next March/April when I am planting seeds.

We weren’t permitted to water outside here in Calgary because of a water main break in June/July right as we had 30c days for a couple of weeks. Pretty much all of my garden is dead now,but oddly enough,my onions and garlic have managed to keep growing. (Which is awesome) definitely this has been my worst gardening year in the 8 years since I grew my first tomato plant.

{{{ JEFF }}} I'm so proud of learning from a mistake last year for my peppers in the beds. Instead of the hot South Carolina sun drooping them & making them sad, I put TULLE (using it as a shade cloth by doubling it over) for the peppers in full sun! It was amazing; no more drooping! I appreciated the tip of not too many plants or seedlings. Despite my being good in that arena, my error THIS year was a rookie mistake; I let hummingbird vine remain in my bed with the copious tomato, pepper, tomatillo, and curcubit crops. OMG. NOPE. Never again. Those little sweet vines - attracting my sweet hummingbirds - hid all the errors of the hornworms. Though I got crops, I still got defoliation & headaches. I've cut plenty away and placed the remnants near the fence; back where they grew last year. I need to quit taking the term "Food Forest" so literally I think. 🤪

thank you for all your videos. they have helped me so much. This year was my first real year at backyard gardening and overall I guess it was a success. I definitely learned a lot. Mainly patience. lol. Unfortunately I fell victim to improper spacing. I will say that if you're reading this, and you live in the southeast united states, and if you want a victory, grow some okra. Growing pumpkins in raised beds thick with clover this year so far so good. I only pull dandelion and purslane if they are in the way of a seedlings otherwise I let them grow and eat them. Clover and purslane are good ground cover especially when combined with bark nuggets / large wood chips. Clover is good food for poultry as well.

Always good information! First year growing more than one or two plants, and while many yields were low, it has been a great learning experience. On a different note, here in southern mid Tennessee, are last few summers have been lower temps on average. It's a lovely 78 right now! What I did notice, less rainfall. Noticeably less afternoon showers. Anyone else had similar weather? ✌️
@stephaniegee2275 ай бұрын
Howdy, neighbor! Middle mid-TN here, and this summer (for us) has been more intensely hot than the previous year or so. Not the worst year ever, but seriously intense. We had to use shade cloth for the first time. (Although yesterday & today have been delightful! 81° right now!). But, yes, we have seen way less afternoon/evening rain.

First year gardening, and I definitely planted too late on some crops, but my main issue was and is slugs. Seeing their silvery little trails all over certain crops and flowers, decimating them is really frustrating. But I also don’t think I could set death traps for them because of their adorableness. With their cute little antenna heads popping up I just keep moving them, but they can travel quite fast and my god can they climb. I feel guilty enough for the fly trap I set. I feel like an insect serial killer. 😅

Hi Jeff~ it’s important to not give up. It seems like every year I have at least one problem. This year is a wonderful year for pole beans in my garden. I’ve been dreaming about canning enough green beans for the winter….Until a Vole chomped off 1/2 of my pole beans just above ground level. This is a new problem for me. I’ve never had a vole invasion. August is too late in the PNW to replant so it’s on to next year. Live and learn, learn, learn. I do have a mulching question. I have heavy mulch over the top of my soaker hoses watering my tomatoes. It always seems moist under the mulch. Does that mean I don’t need to water unless it’s dry? Or should I still water once a week even if it’s still moist? Thanks!

It's not a gardening season if I don't make at least one major mistake (and learn from it). This year I sprayed inseticidal soap on a hundred pepper plants and didn't rinse after a few minutes. Suffocated the plants and had serious leaf drop. Most have bounced back but next year I'll remember to rinse.

Seems like I always make one huge mistake too….this year not on my veggies but on a watts golden pine that was plagued by a caterpillar. I picked them off and then my husband went online and learned we should spray for any remaining eggs so he made some insecticidal soap and we sprayed. Days later the needles turned yellow and the tree looks bad. We learned from the nursery we originally purchased from that the temperature was too warm so we basically fried the tree😢…it should bounce back I hope…it’s about 10 years old.
