1. It was a Tuesday night Carabao Cup fixture against third tier opposition for United fans, OT is hardly going to be bouncing is it? 2. The acoustics in Old Trafford are shite. Seriously, they're terrible. Sound doesn't travel around the ground like it does in some others. 3. The noisiest part of Old Trafford, the Stretford End and North East corner (TRA section), are the complete opposite end from the away fans. When you add all those three factors together you'll realise why it seemed like the United fans weren't singing, but you could clearly hear both sets of fans singing on the telly.

What's Barnsley's problem with Manchester as an area? I mean I get the Leeds hate because of the rivalry and all that, but Barnsley? Weird. And yeah, the atmosphere is never going to be anything against third tier opposition. First of all the vast majority of the home singing is coming from the complete opposite end of the ground. But you also have to factor in there will be literally thousands of people at a mid week Carabao cup game who are at OT for the first time, or who will only get to go to matches like that. The atmosphere is obviously completely different for big PL games. The fact that there were so many people there is testament to the size of the club.
