Thanks for the great review! I know that you have been getting asked a lot of questions about the Kraken, so I am glad that you took your time to really get a feel for it. In about a year I will be building a dedicated room and I am glad to have this sub on my list for a full Marty design to go behind my AT screen. I think there is something magical about the sound of a full Marty. I would like to see you get into some large passive radiator designs to negate the size of the big boxes.

Awesome video. Marty cube seems like the best compramise, specially for the wife in my situation. Hide it as an end table or something if used in a regular living room. Ive seen a very similar size box built 2 of them into the tv stand! One on either side with a center column for your av gear. Id love to see other subs well suited for the marty cube compared. The pa460 is supposed to do very well as well as the tbw100. The price of the pa460 cant be beat! Add some eq and bring up the low end, build 2 and use a nx3000d and your rocking and rolling for dirt cheap.

It's unfortunate that most (all??) of your graphs were limited by saturation/clipping of your microphone. That is a disadvantage of close mic'ing when you don't have a microphone capable of measuring the high SPLs these subwoofers can produce. If you had measured these subwoofers outdoors, your graphs would look markedly different. For example, the GSGAudio 21" Devastator can output >133dB @80Hz - That's a huge difference from the 117dB that your microphone is capable of measuring. A much more realistic test would have been to measure these subwoofers outdoors with the microphone 8 meters away from the subwoofer under test. This distance would prevent the microphone from clipping with the Devastator and would have produced realistic output comparisons for the other subwoofers. In this scenario, the microvee would have measured 114dB (using the inverse square law of a 6dB drop for every doubling of distance) for an output difference of ~25dB!! I salute you for performing this comparison, but it is important to understand the limitations introduced by your equipment and testing methods. The real world performance gap between the various subwoofers is MUCH greater than it would appear from your graphs.

Thanks Jiles. Like you said, that little 12" did an amazing job for it's size. Also It seems like the Velodyne 18 did very well in the lows, almost the best overall, but the cost to yield rato just doesn't add up. The Kraken seems to have beat the UM-18 in the lower lows. I think I'm a little disappointed in the UM-18, I always thought of it as king of the lower frequencies based on the reviews that I've read Lol. However, looks like the Kraken could be the one to beat so far. Thanks again for the info buddy.

@@JilesMcCoy With space at a premium, the PE 18" sealed sub is the one I keep thinking will be enough for me - but it's your channel that continues to give me doubt. My room is probably around the size of yours at 14x15, and while I would think dual 18 sealed would be plenty for me, in that smallish room, there you are with the devastator, full and marty cubes in yours. Space for subs is much more of a premium in my room b/c I have 5 theater seats and a 126" projection screen in it so I need to sit against the back wall to be far enough away. I currently have dual ported 12" subs which shake the room, but I feel like I could use some more visceral feel. Getting a devastator in my room though is almost impossible - I wonder how many sealed subs it would take to approach that thing's output? I've though about running maybe even 4 sealed 15 or 18" subs in the front of the room, however I bet that still wouldn't match the impact of the devastator.

Hi Jiles. First off, thank you for creating some of the best reviews of these subs. I’m in the process of replacing my Monolith 13’s for 21’s. My plan is to use them near field. Hope this isn’t a dumb question, but if I’m crossing them over 80hz or under, does it even matter that I choose a sub with strong midbass like the Eminence, or is the quality of the midbass in the area where it crosses over going to be better? I’m leaning towards the Kraken, but I hear so many good things about the Eminence. I plan to put them in a Full Marty. Thoughts or suggestions would be wonderful and respected!
@JilesMcCoy Жыл бұрын
You will be playing the LFE channel up to 120hz on the subs. The 80hz cross over is probably just for the other channels. So you will get to use the subs through the whole range of the LFE track. midbass is 40-60 ish HZ, so you are good. double 21s is going to be ALOT nearfield. Realistically you probably wont notice a functional difference between the two since its going to be soooo much bass anyway. But the Eminence is designed to be a PA speaker most capable at midbass. The Kraken is a home theater sub well suited to lower frequencies.

Great video: Quick question. When you say "Velodyne DD+ 18 sounds sooooo good", what do you mean by that? Compare it with SB2000 Pro sound please as a reference to distinguish what makes Velodyne DD+ 18 sound so good. Thx FYI: I have 4 Devastators in my 19' x 12' x 8 sealed room :-). I used to have marty as well and the difference that I can describe is that Devs have extremely clean Midbass punch. I don't even have a boost in low end for Devs as you mentioned but I do get pretty flat FR across the seats because of having 4 spread in the rooom so that they give good overall FR. I get great room pressurization by just running them only 5dB hot and plenty of punch in Mid Bass. I really don't think anyone would go back to marty once you hear what dev sounds like. I has a very aggressive sound quality to it combined with great TR (assuming you are on a suspended floor).
@JilesMcCoy3 жыл бұрын
The Devs are great. Its a bandpass design and you need to enjoy that sound to really like them. And you need the floor space. The DD+18 is my favorite subwoofer of all time. The DD+18 eats the SB2000 from a performance point of view. No comparison.

@@JilesMcCoy you did a video on it a while back. I thought it was LaVoce. Maybe it was something else. It was a 21” Marty with one of the pro drivers.

That's the one. I did a build with a Lavoce 21". I don't have that sub any longer though.

Loved this video!! 1). What amp/power did you use for the non-powered subs? 2). What do you estimate the MSRP would be for the Kraken if it were a company-built product? 3). I know this would be almost impossible to do, but a shoot-out between a JTR Captivator RS2, the JL Audio Fathom f212v2, the SVS 16 Ultra, the Procella Audio V18, the PRO AUDIO TECHNOLOGY LFC-21sm, the REL No. 25, and the Paradigm Persona SUB would be sooooooooooooooooooooooooo interesting to see how these "king of the hill" bad boys compare.

Hey! 1) Behringer NU6000 2) ~3500 3) I would love to do an in depth shoot out with those. I would look to do some real compression measurements to find top end SPL for those too. Fun stuff!

Martin Logan is so overpriced! There are Subs out there for nearly half the cost that’s just as good or better!

Hello, I was ready buy a hsu research VTF-3 MK5 HD, but since I came across your videos and a couple of others. I think I could put a little more in and build two of these. I was looking at Daytons new max x series 15. Close to the same specs as the ultimax. Have you looked into these yet? Curios on how they perform? Thanks

Ive never heard the HSU before.
