I really liked today's video (although it didn't have MGS in it!). To this day, I still believe the developers of FF8 where actually going for the 'Ultimecia is Rinoa' scenario, but they had a change of heart at some point and it was scrapped. The story would also make sense that way.

I've always thought the reason Squall had such trouble getting back to his time at the end of the game was because he spent 90% of his life trying to keep his distance from everyone. They tell you that you have to depend on your bonds with one another to both make it to and back from Ultimecia's time. Squall kept everyone at a distance, even Rinoa till the Devs shoved a love story down his throat. Since Squalls bonds with the other characters wasn't very strong he got lost in time compression, till Rinoa was able to find him.

Personally I discount both theories. 1. The time lag between Squall's time and Ultimecia's is much more than a human lifetime, and there is absolutely *no* indication in the game that Sorceresses have extended lifespans. Also, if she *is* Rinoa, she's forgotten a lot. Like who Squall actually is.... 2. Edea's/Ultimecia's icicle attack hits Squall through the right shoulder. That's not an immediately fatal wound, even without restorative magic like Full-Life. Although we don't know exactly how much a Sorceress is capable of, the 'para-magic' used by SeeDs is derived from Doctor Odine's study of Adel. It therefore seems likely that a Sorceress is capable of duplicating similar effects, and that Ultimecia would want to keep her ancient enemy alive for questioning. Squall not knowing how he got from Deling to the prison is easy to explain. He was unconscious, both from the attack, and the dream sequence as Laguna in Winhill.

But the thing is, her forgetting everything makes perfect sense in the game. If you recall, it's canonically established (and a major plot point) that junctioning with GFs causes memory loss. If Rinoa junctioned Squall as Griever and refused to release that junction (which would make sense for a grief-stricken hyper witch) then she actually WOULD slowly forget everything. Remember that in game, every single one of the main cast forgot that they grew up together as children, raised by Edea. So yeah, Ultimecia/Rinoa forgetting Squall, but remembering just enough to know there was something in the past that made her happy that she had lost gives a much more believable reason for wanting to bring that past crashing back into her time. And while there's no indication that Sorceresses live longer lives, there's no indication they don't either. Heck, look at Adel. They can apparently become giantesses that can survive indefinitely in space, so I'd say long lives are certainly not off the table.

1. It's basically borderline inarguable at this point, although not explicitly stated its so generally accepted that it might as well not even be a theory anymore. 2. Its very possible and even logical. It greatly depends I think on which ending you prefer, as I think the endings have a huge effect on whether this is true or not, but as far as the In Water ending goes it almost goes without saying and since it's a favorite of many, it might as well be true. Though when I think about it, even the hypothetically "best" ending, Leave, still leaves some room for this to be true. 3. It's an interesting possibility and it does add a certain extra gravitas to Chell and GLaDOS' interactions, but it's really an up to the player sort of deal. 4. I was a huge proponent of this theory, despite the fact it was hurredly dismissed officially (Although we're talking about Square Enix devs here they're not always consistent with this stuff.), and I kind of still am because the idea of Ultimecia being Rinoa from an alternate future single handedly redefines the entire plot of FF8, and for the better. Instead of being a random evil person from the future, it gives an extra twist to the story's theme of "love" that gives the games' second half much greater weight and worth, while also nicely making the fact Ultimecia only shows up at the very end despite being the big bad much more reasonable...since technically both her presence, and literally her had been there the whole time. I don't care what they say, I'm always going to believe this. I strongly feel the game would have been substantially better if this were official, and made a little more clear at some point. 5. It's a huge stretch because of the time difference, but it might have been possible with some line drawing except for one thing: Love it or hate it, the DLC campaigns basically completely debunk this in every way. There's already a version of Booker/Comstock that was in Rapture at the time, and the similarities between Rapture and Columbia were explained as time and space exchanges between Fink and Suchong, and even if ignoring all of this Andrew Ryan is officially born (in eastern Europe no less) in 1911, a year before Infinite takes place. The baptism that created the split, between timelines where he remained Booker and others where he became Comstock, happened way back in the 1880's. Even when suggesting time travel is involved, there's just no other evidence other than the Bathysphere point to suggest this theory is true, and while the Bathysphere working for Booker is eye-ridge raising I think its cleaner to just chalk it up to a writer mishap. 6. Oh the indoctrination theory. Well, the special "updated" versions of the endings basically deemed it both obsolete and kind of debunked, as they even offered you an additional choice to shoot the Star Child (refuse all choices in other words), which just results in the current cycle being wiped out (but not before giving the next cycle a message to help them succeed where we failed, as other cycles before.) There was a lot I loved about this theory back then, and it'd be interesting but I've also kind of made my peace with the endings at this point because the free, updated endings while not perfect, did address a lot of my issues with the initial endings. Its interesting to talk about but the theory just doesn't really fit anymore. 7. While I love the Ultimecia theory, I've never been a fan of this one. I've always felt like its just reaching for too much, and its reasons rely too much on picking at FF8's more fantastical suspensions of disbelief in order to be true. I feel the imagery at the end was merely just to signal that Squall was dying then, before being saved by Rinoa, and his memories were being jumbled partly because of that, and because of the time compression reversing. (all imagery, again, that would have been more fitting if 4 were true.). I admit too I've never been a big fan of over half or even all of something basically being a consequence-less hallucination, I think it's usually just an easy way out.

7. The blurring image is most due to the abuse of Guardian Force. It is enough said (even bashed) that GF will cause memory loss. It is that which happens to Squall at the end, the terrifying memory loss of who he loves in echange of power. Ultimecia will have the same, as she had forgotten Squall's face.

I can never understand how the end sequence of FF8 gets misinterpreted so often by the fanbase. The game made it abundantly clear that the overuse of the Guardian Forces was already taking a toll on Squall's short and long-term memory about halfway through the game, and references to this become exponentially plentiful and blunt as it progresses. Him having a hard time recognizing Rinoa's face, or him even forgetting his own likeness (aka the hole in the head) after the really long and really taxing final fight isn't too much of a stretch. The only place him being dead makes total sense is at the end, once he can no longer recall anybody's faces (which was the key to escaping the void) and he just dies there alone.

The theory about Rinoa being Ultimecia is totally real for sure. And Squall yet dies of ageing, because Rinoa is Immortal. That what creates the loop where Ultimecia came back in time to compress the time (Making Squall eternal) and it is where Squall beats her. At the end of FF8, Squall dies, all you said about forgotten memories is true and the end should be interpreted like this. But in one of this loop, Rino finally finds him, and they live together, at the end during the credit shows.

I think that Squaresoft originally intended to have proven that Ultimecia IS Rinoa but when merging with Enix the trigger changed hands. Believe me,its like a whole board of staff deciding what is better for their recognition because if they would continue,fans would demand on a continue like with FFX. DrkStrShadow while that fact is true, that's not what was happening at the end. squall was in time compression too long so he started forgetting everything because he started to not exist. They clearly state at the end of the game not to remain in time compression too long for that exact reason, that's why it had the scene with squall and Rinoa in the garden by the lighthouse and squall saying if you come here I'll find you, it was because they had to focus on something real to get back to their own time. Rinoa thought of being with Squall in the garden and Squall didn't, so he began fading from existence. But he ends up remembering and then everything is back to normal.

One interesting Final Fantasy VII theory I've seen is that Aeris isn't killed by Sephiroth. At the angle he impaled her he would have missed most vital organs, but possibly paralyzed her. Unable to move or speak, and her breathe barely noticeable, Cloud lowers her body into the water where she drowns.

+Lunavarion The theory explains this in the fact the Rinoa/Ultimecia was likely persecuted for being a witch and that combined with having a GF junctioned for longer than an average human life causing memory loss that she kind of forgot her whole purpose for seeking time compression in the first place. Also if you take that as truth, the world turns her cold and hardened. Kind of like how Squall was when we first meet him, but Rinoa opens him up, adding something that's a bit of a reverse parallel between the two characters.

Rinoa=Ultimecia fan theory is cool and believable. Squall is Dead theory is not cool and doesn't really work if the Ultimecia theory is true, because how else would Rinoa even get Griever off of Squall if he's dead before they even get to that point? Squall gets impaled by Sorceress Edea, and then nearly a whole disc later he gives Rinoa his ring so he'd have to be alive for that. Also the idea of him being dead and the rest of the game from Disc 2 onwards being his pure imagination takes away a lot of the credibility of the game's storyline.

Plus I think they were trying to mix up the usual colour-coded moral structure by having "destroy" coloured red (the bad colour) but with an image of Anderson (a good guy). The reverse is true for "control" being blue but with the Illusive Man.

For example there is a side quest where you have to retrieve this super bomb thing and stuff is exploding all around you and doesn't even hurt you if you run right into an explosion. you got the indoctrination theory a bit wrong, it actually claims that he still has his (more or less) free will when he enters the dream sequence. But his mental state is weaker than ever, harbinger sets the scene and Sheppard decides. If you choose destroy you overcome the indoctrination, everything else has you lose to harbinger....

+System32 Then again Genocide is hardly a morally acceptable choice, regardless of who is on the "massive death" side of the spectrum. Though touching the reaper artefact in Mass Effect surely shows some influence seeing all the subliminal imagery Shepard was subjected to could have had an effect. That and Shepard manages to come back to life after being thrown into the reaches of space, which only Starkiller from Star Wars The Force Unleashed can survive. Regeneration Project or not, Shepard was as good as a fried lightbulb without some sinister plot from the Reapers, in my opinion.

Yeah cos Anderson represents his will to fight Indoctrination and TIM him giving in. Also Depends in how far back you like to dig and read the codex but most theories say the effects of it start from ME 2 as when he is hit by a a wave from Object Rho in Arrival although exposure to any Reaper Tech can start indoctrination

The only problem I have with the 'Squall is Dead' theory, is that the shard of ice that hits him doesn't hit any critical organs. Maybe a lung but it looks too far off to the side to do too much damage. I do believe that attack and the following fall can kill him. But honestly, we've seen games take bigger 180s before and we haven't questioned it before.

Final Fantasy VIII is by far my favorite, but I had never heard of the Rinoa is Ultimecia thing. I'm surprised you didn't touch on the more popular theory of Squall dying at the end of Disc 1 and everything being a dream after that. Edit: I should have finished the video first.

Rinoa being Ultimecia has already been disproven by the creators. Also Isn't GLADOS being Chell's mother confirmed because of the whole of the end of the second game? Also Squall being "dead" is silly. My main rip is people always point out that Rinoa falls in love with Squall afterwards, but it doesn't actually happen like that. She is still looking at Seifer, and worrying about him as he defends Edea. Then things happen, Squall helps and supports Rinoa, they have a "date" and Squall does what he can to "wake" Rinoa up. Then, and only then, after saving her in space does she truly fall in love with Squall.

Forget the indoctrination stuff, my favourite theory is that Mass Effect and Dragon Age exist in the same universe. It could be argued that a lot of the evidence is down to lazy writing at Bioware, but both series share quite a few similarities to do with biotics and magic or even the Reapers and Darkspawn.

As a huge fan of 8, which is quite often passed over or hated, I'm super glad to see it show up twice. Personally, I arrived at the 'Ultimecia is Rinoa' conclusion when I played it (way too many times) as a kiddo, and I still like it. It makes a lot more sense than this random time witch showing up to mess with stuff because? Reasons? Who knows? But I've never been a fan of the Squall is dead theory. It's just too contrived, too boring, and too overdone. There's a 'main character was dead all along!!!' theory for seemingly every piece of fiction out there, and they just bore me.

I never played it... yet that is, maybe one of these days, I'll get to it :-) but If the screens are identical except for the flies, thatn the theory of Rob could be exact and also, Limbo is a part of the Grec mythology of Hell : The Limbo of Infants (Latin limbus infantium or limbus puerorum) is a hypothesis about the permanent status of the unbaptized who die in infancy, too young to have committed personal sins, but not having been freed from original sin. and since they are both kids... well this should fit the description perfectly :-) There is also another reference to Limbo and the Hell of toddlers in Dante's Inferno ;-)

With FF8 I just can't believe the Squall is dead theory. If you look at it from the writers point of view it is incredibly unfulfilling. Having everything that happened to your characters be all a dream, or a figment of someone's imagination. No one is going to spend all their time, effort and personal feelings into writing a complicated plot, just for it to be superseded by a flimsy hidden retroactive plot device that takes away the weight of your entire story

I personally don't like the Squall is dead theory, (Don't like the thought of playing 3 more discs and it's all just some kind of dream) I have watched a few vids on KZbin about the theory before and it does kind of look like it was the idea but it was scrapped. It's just weird it's all kinda messed up, glitchy, faceless squall then Rinoa finds him laying there then it's all happy music, showing what all the other characters are up to. The camcorder, then after credits the kiss etc. I dunno, I'm sticking with the happy version as I prefer it lol class game.

I'd heard shortly after the game's release that the reason the rest of the game is so wonky (after the second defeat of edea (been a while, is that name right?) is because the second half was supposed to be fore an entirely different game.

Limbo can't just "make it plausible" because in Limbos case it's not a theory. It's the actual message the game tells you. The FF8 "Squall is dead" theory is quite a streth though. I do believe that it makes sense for Ultimecia to be an older Rinoa from a different timeline but as far as Squall being dead goes there's just way too much of a need to interpret many things as "purely metaphorical" for this to work. I enjoy when you can take 9 pieces of clearly stated information, point at a 10th one and go "If THAT one was really just a metaphor for something else it would tie the other 9 together wonderfully and everything would make sense." but if 10 out of 10 points need to be considered a metaphor for a theory to be viable it might just not be a viable theory.

Wait, hang on..if both FF8 theories are true, _and_ you assume the whole game actually happened, then FF8's story is probably the primary antagonist trying to resurrect the primary protagonist. The whole game is *your* ensuring Squall is dead. *If* Squall is dead at the end of Disk 1, assume some kind of apparition or monster clone or SOMETHING took his place for the rest of it, and the memories just fade off at the end and whatever took his place died. Between Rinoa being a sorceress, her memories of him, and whatever was left of (Squall, his replacement, and/or his memories) made Griever. This just reminds her of him every time she sees it, and eventually she goes through with the time compression to see him as him, or try for some kind of resurrection, or something, and he and past her just kill her off. (Perhaps some form of elaborate suicide? Knowing that actually has to happen otherwise time paradox, but still wanting to see him one last time?) Or maybe half the game is some form of hallucination combined with the above. (Or none of it, and it *is* just a weird dream as he dies. But saying the majority of FF8 was "all just a dream" feels remarkably cruel and harsh.) You know, I wasn't a huge fan of FF8 the first time I played through it, and now it's (potentially) just horribly depressing....

Wow! I didn't know those theories for FF VIII. I'm a big fan of that game too so hearing this kind of blew my mind. At least there is still somewhat of a happy ending because even if they are dead, Squall and Rinoa find each other and ride off in what seems to be Garden. Funny story: Back when me and my cousin were playing FF VIII (when it first came out) we were trying to find all the weapons, secrets, and stuff. We printed of some guides but we accidentally left some of the pages in my mom's printer. When she found them she saw a list that included stuff like steel pipes and bomb fragments. She started to get scared thinking we were trying to find instructions to make pipe bombs until she saw on the top of the page the name of the game we were playing and realized it was for that. After she brought the pages to us and explained what she had thought we had a good laugh.
