I had the immense pleasure to train with Master Yagi when he visited the U. S. many years ago at the dojo of Mirakian sensei. I remember one session where he and I were hitting each others arms with powerful shuto strikes. I was strong and every focused shuto to Master Yagi's arms had no effect on him at all. He just smiled. Very impressive.

Although my karate participation had to end in its 35th year (chronic foot injury) I was learning Saifa kata for my yon-dan exam (Shotokan). I had several "lessons" from a yon-dan Goju practitioner in Phoenix while working on a project out there. I enjoyed this new kata immensely and found it opened entirely new doors. Thank you very much for this video.

3:00 if you notice after he does harai otoshi(foot sweep)and he uses a kansetsu-geri (joint kick), usually it takes 2 movements to use a kansetsu geri, lift leg then kick, when you do it that way your opponent can see it way easier and defend, if you do as he did by making use of the lifting up your leg part and turning it into not only a motion to get your leg up to kick but sweeping his leg then using that same moment to use kansetsu-geri.

I've been doing karate for a swell 15 years since the sweet age of 6 years old. In all honesty, of all the thing that I have learnt, It wouldn't take a fully grown male more than a month fully to commit all the movements, sequences and katas to memory. However, one thing that learning can't teach that only time can give, is the natural synergy one gets with Karate as a whole: more seamless movements, quicker and more appropriate responses to movements and more deeper reflective and understanding of the style. -2nd Dan

Really interesting to see the minute differences in the performances of the kata between the various dojos ( Meibukan vs Shoreikan vs Jundokan vs IOGKF, etc.)

@shoreikangoju-ryuusahombu-8342 5 жыл бұрын
I agree, many areas of our (Shoreikan/Toguchi) kata are mush slower, but I think it's just the experiences and different flavors of Masters Higa, Yagi, Toguchi, and Myazato. I think they are all wonderful!!! Remember Master Toguchi's wife Haruko Toguchi was a traditional Ryukyu Court Dancer, the Shoreikan style absorbed a lot from Ryukyu Dance and Mrs. Toguchi's knowledge.
@toraguchitoraguchi9154
@toraguchitoraguchi9154 5 жыл бұрын
@@shoreikangoju-ryuusahombu-8342 The differences are due to the era they learnt the kata from Chojun Miyagi. Yagi learnt the earlier versions of various kata. Miyazato of Jundokan learnt a later version. Anchi Miyagi learnt the final version before Chojun died and passed it to IOGKF, but Morio Higaonna learnt from both Miyazato and Anichi Miyagi. The Opening of the kata differed too. In the beginning Chojun taught what you see here - they begin with feet planted apart and hands at their sides, subsequently by 1940 he changed it so that the kata begins with hands and feet together. If you look at Meibukan Saifa, you see similarities with Shitoryu Saifa-these similarities were due to their common ancestry from Kanryo Higaonna. But in later years Chojun changed the kata so what you see in Jundokan IOGKF etc are the later version when the hammer strike is done with the body facing sideways instead of forwards. In Shisochin, the four palm strikes were done quickly in Meibukan....but in Jundokan they do it slowly. Anichi Miyagi actually asked why the difference? And Chojun said when he taught Yagi etc he was young and able to do it fast but by the time he taught Miyazato he was old and did it slowly. Hence IOGKF reverted to doing it quickly. I mean many people can discuss why and who's version is correct, but the truth is all were the right versions because all were taught by Chojun Miyagi. He was the founder and his karate evolved over the years as his philosophy, physique and understanding of karate changed. From the minute dfferences in Kata one can tell a student's lineage.
@shoreikangoju-ryuusahombu-8342
@shoreikangoju-ryuusahombu-8342 5 жыл бұрын
@@toraguchitoraguchi9154 I agree, I also think that Masters - Higa, Toguchi, Yagi, and Miyazato earned the right to further develop their Goju-Ryu (Naha Ti) as Master Miyagi passed it on to them, as well as add their own understanding and experiences. In Okinawa: Ryukyu style Karate is not meant to be standardized like Judo or Kendo. I am told that Master Toguchi was one of both Master Higa and Master Miyagi's first students, and he studied with both of his teachers until there death, even while teaching his own students. And also much time with Jahatsu Kyoda, which gave him a very unique Naha Ti education.
@toraguchitoraguchi9154
@toraguchitoraguchi9154 5 жыл бұрын
@@shoreikangoju-ryuusahombu-8342 Yes, there were several masters like Toguchi and Higa's students who teach their own versions of Goju-Ryu Kata, and that is quite normal. Even within Meibukan their masters have distinct styles of doing Kata, and most of them do it better than the second and 3rd generation Yagis..there's Ikemiyagi for example....In the Jundokan, they have several masters whose styles of Kata are different , and some of them like Taira have branched out- and within the IOGKF today, Nakamura is doing an intense version of Higaonna's teachings on Kata which looks a little different but only because he is built differently from Higaonna BUT despite variations in the appearance of Kata, when you listen to them talk about the core of Goju training and philosophy, they are all the same. The core of Goju Karate is in its training system, from Junbi Undo to Hojo Undo to Sanchin Tensho with Shime, Kakie, kata etc....the outward appearances differ from school to school but the core remains unchanged.

Funakoshi sensei never liked the term Shotokan. He'd say only Karate do. In his early development, he only refered to Naha Te, Shuri Te and Tomari Te. He would always bow to Okinawa. Goju is a term that Miyagi sensei never produced. Today, all these labels have created more separation than unity, as Funakoshi sensei predicted.
