Also you can add launch pad to hot corner, I love it, top right, and bottom right for Mission Control, bottom left Lock Screen and top left for desk top that is my favorite combo of hot corners

Shift+Cmd+5 is also great if you want to grab shots of individual windows, just hover over the window and it will automatically highlight it.

Gary, were you an apple developer who made all this stuff…? Wow. I never cease being amazed with your videos. Apple needs to buy them from you and supply them to customers.

Another excellent video! I use shortcuts all the time and some even work on my iPad (I use an old Apple Magic Keyboard with batteries from eons ago). My favorite Keyboard shortcut is the “COMMAND TAB” to flip thru open apps super fast - but you can also go BACKWORD - once you select ”COMMAND TAB” you can then tap on the “TILDA” key (while still holding the COMMAND key to go backward) I use this all the time with my iPad. Thank you for this video it is packed with great tips!

Thanks a lot Gary! I am converted to using full screen on my Mac now instead of maximum size windows. More screen real estate and Cmd Tab between apps. The trick of dragging and dropping between Finder Tabs has made me quit those annoying double windows for dragging dropping files too. Will stick with spacebar for previews though, maximizable view and generally more convenient.

Using Launchpad does now allow for accessing the separate functions of System Preferences the way Spotlight does. Try searching for Displays or Passwords with Launchpad. The best you can do is get System Preferences, then click on the function you want. Spotlight may be a little slow, but so is Launchpad for those functions.

Right. I'm just suggesting using LaunchPad for app launching. For getting directly to part of System Preferences, LaunchPad isn't an option.

I have assigned keyboard shortcuts for any of the 1-7 different Desktops I have up going at any given time, and have set those to open on that Desktop only so they stay consistent. Rather than arrow key or tap thru the App Switcher, I just tap Control +(Desktop number) and I can fly thru my Desktops/apps. I only use App Switcher for apps I’ve hidden but not quit.

If you don't take a lot of screenshots, you might want to go further and not use any keyboard shortcut for it. Instead, just open up Launchpad and search for "Screenshot" (or "Grab" on older MacOS versions), which gives you what command-shift-5 does now. I don't think I've used the shortcuts since Mac OS X came out, because it was easier for me to just remember the name than whether I needed command-shift-3 or command-shift-4.

while I were watching I noticed the f4 key on my mac brings me strate to the launchpad, for the past year I've been finding the app I want simply by going into my applications folder and launching it that way, I was considering organising my apps by catigory in there but I can't move system apps but I could easily do it with apps I install, for instance, move vlc into a folder titled sound and video, and put balena etcher in accessaries

Thanks for all the great videos! I have two questions 1 how do you quit picture-in-picture zoom box. The only way I know now is to zoom out until the box is gone! 2 How do you center picture preview or make the default full screen. Now it always pops up on the left. Then I have to click on the green dot to make it full screen and centered. Thanks!
@macmost
@macmost 2 жыл бұрын
Do you mean the system Accessibility feature, Zoom? See System Preferences, Accessibility, Zoom and look at the "Toggle Zoom" shortcut. For the Preview app, you can't make it default to full screen or center.
@paulcamalin5236
@paulcamalin5236 2 жыл бұрын
@@macmost Thanks for the reply! Toggle (command-option -8) gets you back to the "zoomED" box. I just want to quit the zoom box and start all over next time and not having to zoom out first. ESC would have been a good option to quit. About the preview there are many mac users who are annoyed by that left-sided preview as I googled for a solution. Another annoying thing is you can't move to the next picture in the preview using the arrow keys if you have not selected all the photos in the first place. I know you can use highlight one and press space bar to be able to use the arrow keys but it's not brining up the same preview window with its all functionality. I wish Apple would learn from Windows and correct that.
@macmost
@macmost 2 жыл бұрын
@@paulcamalin5236 I'm not understanding what you mean then. Command+Option+8 toggles Zoom on or off. This is a feature of the system, not something you "quit." As for Preview, that is an app and you open things with it. Don't get hung up on the name of the app. If you open a group of photos, you can view them all. But using arrows won't open a new one. Quick Look (spacebar) is what you want, or just the Finder Preview is probably best for your needs. See kzbin.info/www/bejne/j162fpl3q7R-kK8

@@macmost Thanks again for your response. For the zoom I upgraded to Monterey and that solved my problem. I think the zoom behavior as I described was just a software glitch. About the use of arrows I do not know if you work with windows but apple really should do it like windows photo does it. much easier to use.

Just click and drag in the title bar to place the window where you want, even across screens. Or, go to the Window menu and there is an option there to move to another display.

@@macmost Yes, i remember i watched that video last year. In one of your videos you mentioned Karabiner-Element, I knew the software's name from there and then start using it. It is the best keyboard shortcuts app in very detail. I even cannot use a fraction of it, yet I think its very useful. I searched video tutorials about it, but could not find one explaining as good as you do. So consider making one about it. It works very well with external keyboards with different set of keys than on your MacBook and you can make any keyboard exactly as you want.

At about 2:30, you talk about a Spotlight key (F4) but then show what appears to me to be Launchpad. Am I wrong, or is that a mistake in your video? I'm using the old white extended keyboard (I prefer it!) which has 15 function keys. I think that I can assign almost any function to any of those function keys even though none are pre-configured.

I have been watching your videos since I bought my first Mac in 2017. So, it's not a surprise for me that I am already habitual of using all the 7 Shortcuts you are telling to use. There is only one thing I have not found a solution. Opening a pdf file in full screen in preview. I always struggle to press option+ arrow OR ctr+cmd+f to make it fullscreen. Is there any way to always open pdf in full screen automatically?
@macmost
@macmost 2 жыл бұрын
No, because a new document would be a new window and it wouldn't know you want it full screen. I think if you open a second PDF it should open as a tab in the same full screen window. But getting the first one to open full screen isn't possible as far as I can tell.

Great video as always! Got a comment and questions. How come your spotlight have all the icons and text in the bottom, while my MacBook Pro 14” is just a month old, I remember when it was new on the first few days it looked like yours, but now mine looks just like previous design with just the bar only. I’ve become a pro user? haha. Well, I did switch from an 2008 MacBook Pro….. 2. Nice, and thanks! On the 14” F4 is spotlight so I’ll start using it that way, and cmd + space I’ll use launchpad from now on. And yes, it’s quicker! :) I just wish you could reassign the Focus mode (F5) because I don’t use it.

But on mine, in the early days I remember it looked like yours for a bit, but now it's only the bar that appears for me. And it works just fine I can search for everything on my Mac. From the About page on my site: You talk too fast in your videos. Can you slow down? The way you see me (Gary) in my videos is the way I really talk. I am enthusiastic about technology and I think it shows in the videos. I do not try to slow myself down or alter how I talk in the videos. I just try to be myself. I know I can’t please everyone all the time, so no matter how I did the videos there would be a few complaints. But I know that if I tried to tone down my enthusiasm or be someone other than who I am, then there’s no way I would have made this many episodes over many years.
