It's usually a shocker when a main character ends up dying in any fictional media. It's even more of a shocker when they end up being dead from the start of the whole journey. The one in video games that still hits me with this brilliant twist is, of course, Ethan Winters. The fact that both 7 and 8 actually showed why Ethan didn't get bothered with losing body parts and healed because of his death and him being a molded all along was an absolute perfect twist.

I genuinely have no idea how people didn't know Ethan was mold infected. I can see people not noticing he died at the beginning of 7, but the fact that they literally stapled his hand back on PLUS the various times he could casually reattach limbs, it was obvious he stopped being human

Yup. Suspected something from the start of 7 when I saw stapled hand functioning. Resident Evil have a lot of scientific hand waving but they never were blatant in unexplainig things unless there was a reason for it. I holestly thought Ethan was with rare DNA and bonded perfectly with mold. Which he kinda technically did if you look at it from an angle of perspective.

Resident Evil loves to do their random bullshit, like suplexing BOWs and punching volcanic boulders. For me it was obvious when he was in the hive mind in RE7, he had to have been infected to be seeing Jack and the others through the visions.

Also RE6 we saw Sherry Birkin get impaled by a huge chunk of metal. When she asked jake to remove it despite his protest that it wasnt a good idea, she instantly healed that giant wound that would've killed any normal person. Due to the Virus being in her system. So a lot of people had that idea in their heads that it was something like that. everyone in RE7 was infected the moment they stepped foot into that house. Due to Eveline. Sherry is very much human and bonded with her T virus which gave her healing abilities so people would think the same for Ethan and the mold virus. Him being flat out dead during 7 and 8 is why people didnt understand until it was explained.

To be fair to Ethan Winters being dead, he wasn’t dead at the start of RE7 but after his first meeting with Jack Baker, and there are clues that Ethan is dead in RE7 and Village, like how he is able to talk to Jack and Zoe Baker in a hive mind, with Jack being dead but Zoe’s fate being more ambiguous until the End of Zoe DLC where she is alive, and how Lady Dimitrescu comments on Ethan’s blood being stale. I’ve not played RE7 or Village, but that clued me in on the reveal of Ethan being dead in Village.

That ending of Little Hope is something i didn't expect when i played it for the 1st time No Matter what ending you get, even if you got everyone except for Andrew dead, Andrew will still be revealed as Anthony Clarke who Survived the House Fire Tragedy and Shows him Walking around Little Hope all by himself just talking to himself. Apparently, Anthony has Schizophrenia and it is a serious mental health condition that affects how people think, feel and behave. It may result in a mix of hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking and behavior. Hallucinations involve seeing things or hearing voices that others can't.

If you're doing this as more than "player character", may I suggest Ghost Trick Phantom Detective (super twist: game starts with us knowing we're dead and us trying to find out who killed us as a ghost... Then turns out the dead body we thought was ours isn't!), Spec Ops The Line (the bad guy we were sent to stop killed himself months ago and the protagonist hallucinated talking to him), The MISSING (the entire game is a dying dream as our protagonist attempted suicide, and their best friend and a paramedic are trying to revive them causing them to pop up in the dream in odd ways), Whitestone (the protagonist and several other characters are actually reanimated corpses revived by the main villain as they studied alchemy) and of course the biggest plot twist of all VIKTOR REZNOV from Call of Duty Black Ops who follows our protagonist for the entire game only to turn out to be a beainwashing induced hallucination.

With Dead Space, the crazy part is every chapter spelled out NICOLE IS DEAD. When I first saw that in a video, I was confused until I looked back into it. Clever play on Visceral.

It's not a horror, but Dante's Inferno surprised me. When you consider the fact that the first boss is Death, who appears when Dante is stabbed in the back & he can enter Hell, it makes sense, but it never occurred to me that it took!

tbh i like this...i can say...ive played a game where u played a person who died, but he was brought back..as the game i refer to is Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, where you played as a man whos now called "The Fateless One" as the game is in the "Age of Arcana" where magic is beginning to grow...tbh some games hint early on that your playing a previous dead guy..

I haven't dug too deep into the Dead Space lore, but is it even confirmed that Kendra had these hallucinations? I finally played the remake a few weeks ago for the first time, but I always had the feeling that she could've just said that to nudge Isaac towards the truth the the Nicole he's been seeing throughout the game is not real, like leading him towards the realization for himself, because if she had just told him he most definitely wouldn't have believed her. As for Shattered Memories, I think I played it for a bit many years ago and it honestly wasn't that bad. A bit repetitive because you don't have combat except run, run, run and then run some more until you reach the exit, but it was definitely interesting. One of the games where I wouldn't be mad about a port for modern consoles.

I don’t know if you’ve made a list like this but an idea for a top (insert number) list to make is top (again, insert number 😅) horror game mc who turned out to be villains/antagonist and/or horrible/bad people. Like Daniel and Osmund Sandler (more specifically the second/split half of his personality, the architect. But even then there’s only so much you can blame that personality of his since we learn that the very first victims he claimed was killed by Osmund himself) from Amnesia The Dark Descent and Amnesia A Machine for Pigs, James Sunderland from Silent Hill 2/Silent Hill 2 RE. Then, depending on how specific the list would be and the criteria, some characters that aren’t necessarily bad or evil but have done questionable things due to them being unstable and not well could maybe also be included like Fran Bow from Fran Bow, the main character in Mad Father (depending on the ending).
