Love your storytelling. I moved from Woking (Surrey) to Sydney. Sure you can have as much planning and control in your life as you want. But make sure you have some friends in Singapore, who you can meet for having good time. Otherwise, the next time you go back to London and meet your friends, you won’t feel like going back to Singapore again.

I have lived in Singapore for 38 years. I have friends from Australia & USA who intend to migrate to Singapore, thinking it's a small city state in Asia, where an expat will be highly valued. They thought, we need English teachers, we still live in jungle, and since it's part of Asia, it must be cheap. I told them : Give it trial run, at least 3 - 6 months! They were shocked at how modern it is, almost everything runs on auto & digital. Their wives & daughters are safe back at the apartment at 2 am after dancing at the clubs, took taxi. All these infrastructure cost money, so is safety. Heck, Singapore was even once import drinking water! Singapore's cost of living is high. Employment is tight & competitive. Somebody from China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Myanmar will be ready to do your type of jobs, for lower price. Since the pandemic, when most of workforce chose to work from home, the rental of apartment has been skyrocketing. It's what it's. My take is: You can't be poor in Singapore, life will be miserable.

What about a family of 2 having total 10K sgd? Can we save if we cook food by our own?
@tutiens7943 Жыл бұрын
@@vrinda.nambiar Singapore has diverse residential area. $10k a month for 2 persons is good enough, if you know how to budget properly. Eg. Stay at suburban, where the apartment rental is cheaper. Supermarket products are cheaper - this is where the locals shop. The wet markets are plenty, where you could get fresh produce eg : meat, vegetables, fruit, etc. Restaurant prices downtown is expensive, but many cafe & food court & fast food joints are relatively cheap. Don't worry about transport, Singapore is an island, everywhere is connected by MRT (train) and buses. These public transport is cheap. Don't buy car. Car in Singapore is 4x the price in Europe & USA.

I just wrote an equivalent assessment of Sydney based on your honesty but it turned from a dirge into a novella. In my case i was sizing up the impact of living conditions on personal connections. The short version is Sydney was recently voted the third least friendly city on earth and although I'm not widely travelled, this rang true for me, when this definitely wasn't always the case. I think this is a place where the impact of changing economics on culture and interpersonal relationships is stark. To the extent that even relative wealth, as well, is arguably not enough to sustain you here. It was once a place where you could still have an interesting life with warmth in it even if you were not wealthy. I miss those days terribly. It just became incrementally less and less like that. I've sometimes said that living in Sydney feels like living with someone you've broken up with. It's like you need to grieve but instead you can't distance yourself, all the time. I don't know if that makes any sense, I've never lived with an ex. I've also said it's like living with a ghost city superimposed onto the one you see, where you're haunted. It sounds a bit emo and gentrification in cities is common, I'm not as young as i was, and i am also depressed. Which is why when i saw that vote of unfriendliness it was like a revelation. It's hard to put my finger on things that might be universal rather than my particulars, at least without waffling. I can almost explain it like an infection where you could almost unconsciously start to become part of an atmosphere you hate just by trying to subsist and get by. If we take the idea of avoidance of eye contact on public transport as a reference point, it's both super unfriendly and there's also reasons this behaviour is learned over time, until you may practice it yourself unconsciously without a second thought. I think one of my biggest worries about this place is that it hardens people and arguably you will be in some degree of danger here if you cannot foster this trait. It's a dog eat dog world and if you tend to get anxious under stupid amounts of pressure, please stay far away if you can, I feel like joyful people could wind uo leading a joyless existence here. It could still change again, but it could be argued the city has always had traits from its colonial inception that are rotten to the core. John Birmingham who wrote He Died With A Felafel In His Hand wrote a history of the seamier side of Sydney called Leviathan, and this is a reminder to myself to read it.

@@vrinda.nambiar As a total salary, that would be the middle income. If you mean sgd 10k in saving and no income, then it's easily gone in 2-6 months depending on your rent and lifestyle. Rent would be your biggest expense.

Learn to adapt. Expect the unexpected no matter how well you have planned because there will be factors which are not in your control. Simply put, the world is not perfect, and we all live in this imperfect world. As long as you moderate your expectation and loosen up a bit in your strive for perfection, you will find life less stressful and acceptable. It's all in the mind. Sometimes, just accept reality as is. It is what it is. You would probably be happier. Look for the sunshine, not the rain. Be optimistic.

Sg is branded as the most expensive city to lived in due to bias reporting based on expat living their full western lifestyle without adapting to Sg local lifestyle. Cars ownership are purposely made costly to limit the need to expand roads infrastructure in limited land in this small island. But this is grossly compensated by the public transport (trains & bus & taxis ) systems. Housing rentals has escalated in 2022 largely due to the huge surge of expats, foreign companies and Chinese relocating to Sg from China & Hong Kong. Also the downturn of global economy coupled with the Ukraine / Russia war affecting EU countries, UK and US, many westerners plus some Indian nationals also relocate to Sg due to Sg’s stability. This aggravated rental market chasing the steep rise. The cheaper way is to rent and live in our HDB flats which is much more affordable than condominium and landed properties.

Not only is it a pleasure to listen to your soothing accent (so smooth - you would be amazing at bedtime stories for adults!), the responses you have evoked here from locals who are proud of their home are genuinely interesting to stumble across as a neighbouring Australian. Enough to forgive you for that click bait! Wishing you and your husband as well as your viewers all the best. Finally, as an aside, to the Singaporeans that are struggling to find a home in the current atmosphere, you are in my thoughts now that i know. i hope it gets better. I appreciate the pride you have in your country in spite of this difficulty, it's quite heartwarming as well as your hospitality to expats even with the housing market in the state it's in. We have similar problems in Sydney yet it looks like the system set up by government in Singapore is very different, so that's really interesting. As an Australian, we don't always hear a lot about Singapore in general so i enjoyed seeing lots of comments by locals, especially outside of a political subject. And Meta, you were able to evoke this commentary, more please (: Cheers! ✌️

I just came back from Malaysia after visiting some relatives. Inflation there is crazy. For locals,their daily necessities is way more expensive for locals earning ringgit. Even their so called subsidise petrol is 😅 In fact,normal people like us,no matter where,Inflation hit many of us. As for housing in Singapore, like what some mentioned,the housing market is crazy because of many expats moving here which pushes up the rental market. One more thing is that during the last 2 years covid,there was not enough manpower building new houses. Now manpower is back,the building of new houses is starting to get back into shape,so hopefully in a year or 2,the market will be lowered or at least stabilise. There's always light at the end of the tunnel! Keep going👍

This is a beautiful little short video. I too moved to Singapore for higher education last year with big plans and a dream. Things didn’t go as per plan and I’ve always had to redirect efforts and change the course of action. What I loved about your video is how you’ve been able to still make sense of it all despite the obvious disappointments we do face. We can only truly hope for the best but ultimately what’s written will manifest, the rest is just our emotions, thoughts, anxiety and fear that’s holding us back or clouding judgement. Moving wasn’t the easiest but I don’t regret taking the plunge and I suppose life is what you make of it but also what’s in store for you. However through it all, it’s important to take each day as it comes and appreciate the time we have and be happy in the present which is a much more healthier way to go about life. Deep underlying messages and I’m glad that I can relate to this and that there are other people who are also going through the same feelings and emotions.

The tropical thunderstorms are what I miss the most, and when London skies are generous enough to provide a little shower, it almost feels like home. All the rain footage in your video brought lots of comfort (thank you!) and I’m glad that you’re finding joy in some of it too. I grew up learning to work around it - to clock in a good nap, enjoy the indoors, or linger a little longer at the coffee shops and order a second teh tarik. I hope you find some form of home and what works for you in singapore. It already looks like you’ve managed to over the course of a few months, which is commendable. All the best ❤

Rent’s been wild here too - albeit not as bad as Singapore - and we’re definitely feeling the pinch in other areas. Also, random suggestion, do try a kayaking trail whilst you’re there! Our mangroves are really unique (and fading) and it’s quite calming being in the middle of it all at sunrise. I try to join one whenever I’m back for Christmas and it’s a really special experience you can only get in the tropics :)

What a great video and narration! I can totally relate that Singapore is a bustling and beautiful city. Yes it's expensive but that's mostly due to being in the Central or city Area. Try staying in outer region or the heartlands and it's just as bustling and rents are way affordable. Heartlands are still well connected to the city easily. It all depends on your wants and needs. If you can financially sustain during your short term stay here, then go for it! Best wishes to you and your hubs and hope you enjoy it here more!

I tried the Heartlands before leaving Singapore. It's just as expensive maybe only about $500 cheaper than central. It's not worth it (for me anyway) because it's too far out for people who need to be in the office some days, have friends in central and the time in unsheltered walk to MRTs aint worth it. I also hate Grab in Singapore. But Singapore is a great place but Rental market has really made people think twice
@fahmidamiah Жыл бұрын
@@hollanda500 agreed regarding HDB rents, even in the Heartlands, are not much better as we and many others have been looking. In our opinion, this rental market is unsustainable, for both foreigners and locals.

If budget is your main concern, perhaps you could try experience lower cost cities like Bangkok, Manila or Kuala Lumpur, Penang 1st? Maybe try living there for 1 month or so. Few years ago, I often go to Singapore for work. It is a beautiful & safe country. I do like Singapore a lot but I know I can't afford a luxury lifestyle there. Singapore is great but if a comfortable/luxury lifestyle we are looking for, we either have to earn more or choose a lower cost country. I will still love to travel to Singapore for sure.

I like your video, it has a calming vibe! haha!!! Well....I came across Matt and Julia's channel. They have a video whereby they interviewed Chris, an expat from UK who lived in Singapore for 5 years. He talked about his salary and his job here. And how he felt he couldn't fit in here in Singapore initially and where he stayed. And later how he managed to adapt. I thought it might be helpful to connect with other expats and share experiences. It will be great too to know the locals and make new friends to get helpful tips. It's always comforting to have friends around in a foreign country. ;) Happy New Year to you both and Fighting!!!!💪😂

I tend to do my filming and writing privately 🙈Having friends has been very helpful and you’re right, community and support is so important. This video is about my expectations vs (an evolving) reality in the face of making plans, and I’ve learnt a lot as the market changed quite quickly in a short space of time (grateful for life’s teachings), which is affecting people in different ways. But we are looking forward to what 2023 brings and feel so happy to be in Singapore. @fahmidamiah Жыл бұрын
We have found locals to be very friendly :) I think immersion into phones is a 'city person' trait and you do find this in Singapore for sure, as well as London etc. Singapore is sometimes described as "reserved" and Singaporeans don't tend to talk to strangers, and as a Londoner myself, this is no different from city life back home. But I do think people are just busy, so I can totally understand why people might feel lonely; it's understandable. I have found it's been easiest to make new friends by doing more local activities and classes through hobbies. I also believe real friendships can take time to develop - years even - so with that in mind, I tend to just ensure I spend *quality* time in certain spaces rather than just being "anywhere" for the sake of it. Time is precious to me :)

The annual average cost of living in London for a single person( one bedroom ) is over £36,000O. Our shophouse rental units and condo with facilities are much lower than in big city in London. Our utilities bill, hawker food , taxes are lots more lower,too. Glad you enjoy living here.

Hi Audrey, thanks so much for your comment, happy new year 🎉 It sounds like you’re in London now? my hometown! ❤️ A lot of my family and friends are there, some rent, most own. The cost of living in London for a single person has definitely gone up, but the rental opportunities are different because there are other towns and cities too, which is good for remote workers. I’d say this is the biggest difference regarding (specifically) rental when one compares Singapore with UK. What’s also interesting is that majority of renters don’t live in the more expensive central areas of London, so the average rent is taking this into account. It’s important for anyone moving abroad anywhere to be aware of their finances and possible economic changes in 2023 especially if they have families and dependants to look after on a single salary ☺️ I hope this video is useful to them. And that even if a place has expensive housing, there are other wonderful pros there, like in Singapore!! 🥰❤️ Hoping for 2023 to be good to everyone 🙏🏾☺️

I'm glad that at the end of the video you said you have no regrets :) Seriously, Singapore is one of the safest places in the world. Transport links via MRT and buses to everywhere - you don't need a car. Here there are no natural disasters, no typhoons. Weather is like summer all year round - no freezing cold winters. Can jet to neighbouring countries for holidays on the cheap. In Singapore, everything is so convenient. If you are hungry, just walk downstairs to hawker stall. Of course there will always be other factors like increasing rental to contend with - but you need to understand why this is so - there are many others like you coming here to take advantage of the job or business opportunities and personal safety they cannot find back home.

Rental racism does sadly persist in Singapore. I am glad that many landlords are sickened by it as well as property agents who do their best to challenge it. It is still hard for many, especially those who aren't considered "Expats" at (literally) face value, who don't typically look for and live in the condos and luxury apartments and who have big salaries. I stumbled upon this video by chance, and thank you for sharing this. I am a local who decided to move out of my mum's place and live independently five years ago - something that is uncommon amongst the locals. Just as there were ups to having my own space, there are certainly downs that come with it. Those down moments made me feel regretful at times for moving out and the thought of moving back to my mum's place is, for lack of a better word, embarrassing - despite her lovingly keeping the option open for me. Recently, life has it that I got into a dispute with my then-landlord that forced me out of the apartment and settled in another unit that, to quote your words in this video, is far from perfect. I have spent the last few months desperately trying to find a space that would be more long-term for me but that has not been successful. I felt lost and desperate until I decided to slow down and appreciate what I have now and funny how life just got brighter and lighter then. My point is, I felt I was alone in going through all that until I saw this and, so, it is always a good reminder that when you think you are alone, you are not. No regrets. Only life experiences to live and remember by :)

You have really helped me understand renting in Singapore more from your perspective. I am so sorry that you've experienced these downs and hope you are doing okay now? We are sending you lots of love and well wishes to find home. Because that's what we all want and need, whether it's our own property (mortgaged) or we are renting, we as human beings need home. For physical shelter and for our general wellbeing. I hope you have found it and feeling much more rooted and stable now in life ❤️ I've had my fair share of bad landlords too (as well as good ones), so I completely relate to your experience of needing to leave a place because of them :( But like you have said, life is a journey and our experiences truly make us stronger and wiser. As someone who moved here recently with my husband , if you don't look oriental/chinese they will treat you a bit differently. My husband is white and I am tanned. First two months I was here I noticed Singaporean especially the elderly love to stare and its so uncomfortable for me but I was being optimistic and thinking maybe they just being curious, till I encountered something that hurt my feelings. One of our neighbours came to our house, to say hi, and they thought Im the maid. They just love to stare at us, I think its very rude. Apart from this experience i think singapore is lovely.

So sorry that this happened to u. My cousin is Eurasian and sometimes gets mistaken too. It’s a genuine mistake by the elderly locals. The younger ones are less tactless and they are more cosmopolitan. I really feel bad for your experience but I hope we’ve been nice otherwise. Every country has its ups and downs. My friends and I were mistaken for being Jap in England and got spat on by some elderly people there before. That was in the 90s, so those were vets who knew Japan to be cruel at war. None of us were Jap, but they couldn’t tell us apart. ^^”

What’s wrong to be the maid? Maids are humans and make money. I’ll be offended if anyone thought I was a criminal, pedo, rapist, thief but nothing wrong from being the maid. I’m a Latina and they think I am Philippine although Koreans apparently can tell the difference. I’m brown and have no problems other than men’s approaching in romantic ways which I just ignore! But yeah nothing wrong to be the maid, shouldn’t hurt your feelings. Perhaps wasn’t even the skin color perhaps was the behavior and attitude.

@@saronahjorgen5845 I doubt it was not based in your skin color it was based on the vibe you gave to the person who knew could get into your nerve, insecurity by pointing your skin color. It’s not the first time it happens? Is it? It’s something that bother you and others can read it. Start by being ok on your own skin, by knowing you’re a child lox god like I and even the person who thought or poke you into calling you a maid, This person was vibing low and so were you with your skin color insecurity. I’ve been before in my ignorance thinking I was better to the ones who were few shades darker than I. It’s just a reflection of our own insecurities. Anyone secure of itself will take it as a simply mistake, well I was confused as the maid so what how do that lower my value. Realize brown, blue or violet you’re a child of god, a mad or a doctor or lawyer you’re still a child of god. Do go and no harms even to those who bother you, just move on from it as they most probably received otherwise how would they know it and use it as a weapon. Our world is upside down and we continue to fight, not ascend to a more loving energy. I have watched your other videos and have appreciated them and enjoy your voice presentation style and soothing voice. They are also quite informative. Am sorry if caused any hurt by my comments, maybe I was not in a good place at the time. I wish you luck and happiness in your new ventures in life and applaud your resilience and courage to do what you are doing 🙏

Born and bred here I thought life was all this rush and race till I left for study overseas. I want to say that there is always a choice even for us Singaporeans. But a slower pace probably means a lower pay too

Thank you for sharing your experience. I have to agree, with the way this world functions, when we slow down something has to give, and it’s usually pay. But I do believe, if one has the means (even modest means), it can do wonders to slow down, leave the rat race (even if temporarily). We were never designed to work in that way. In case you’re interested, I talk a little about this in my earlier videos: Moving to Singapore (part 1) and a silent vlog from 2021 titled Working from Home. Wishing you the best for 2023 ❤️ thank you for being here ❤️

Whoahh i love ur storytelling! Keep posting.. Been living here in Singapore for 10 years now.. Prices might be crazy here especially the rental.. but given the choice ill still choose Singapore becoz of how safe and efficient it is to live here.. not to mention that most Local Singaporeans are kind and very welcoming.. 😊😎

I love your voice and how you film the video. Being a local, yes Singapore is an expensive and stressful country and if you are not born here or live here for long time, the feeling will be stronger. But slowly you will find the beauty of Singapore, try to mix with some locals to know more about Singapore. Hope you find more happiness to stay in Singapore as no country in this world is perfect.
