Reasons Why Foreigners Leave Singapore Disclaimer: These are not MY PERSONAL opinions on each topic. This is a collection from conversations I had with expats living in Singapore who are thinking of moving back to their home countries. I have no plans to leave Singapore and could not be happier living here.

Wherever you go, racism will always be there. Of course you're seeing at the view of an expat, not in Singaporeans' shoe. It is partly due to government policies that results in the influx of foreigners coming into Singapore to work. You can do some diggings in forums why Singaporeans absolutely detest certain groups of people, especially those who brought their own culture that doesn't fit into our social norms or referring people from their hometown to 'steal' works from locals via their own interest group or getting companies that can help find ways to get a permit easily. These are just some of the factors that partially contributes into it.

To understand racism among Indians from India, you must understand their caste system. The "upper" caste will never respect the "lower" caste and they bring along this mentality to any country they visit. It's worse when they reside in that country. They even look down on the resident Indians.

Language is an issue for most foreigners. People in Singapore speak a local dialect--Hakka, Hokkien, Teochew, etc. There is A LOT of small talk at the wet market, on the bus, at shopping malls, etc., just less in English. Why judge local norms and languages through English? Malaysians, the biggest immigrant group in Singapore, have no issue with small talk using dialects. Racism is less pervasive in Singapore than other countries due to excellent political leadership, but it does exist sadly, particularly towards blue collar workers.

Regarding finding partners in Singapore, i would say that its quite a dividing experience amongst the expats community. My expats friends have foundd partners in the local community, while those who dont find local partners find it hard to get a partner here. So making compromises to integrate into the local community might be required here. (And a smart policy for integration imo)

Unfortunately, racism happens in all societies and this is true for Singapore and racism do exist among locals. The racism most people experienced in Singapore are usually non-violent where it is more common in the Western world. Also sometimes it is not necessary racism, but xenophobia, which is probably more likely the case especially if it has do with foreigners, for example even local indians might dislike India's indians or even local chinese might not like China's Chinese due to cultural differences. However we have strict laws against racism and xenophobia which you don't see that being uphold in many countries around the world. It is impossible to get rid of racism and xenophobia because these are social issues that will persist due to different individual perceptions and values, however it can be minimized through education and civil laws.

Its a Hokkien-dominated society; those in this category obviously face various challenges. If you're from Fujian or consider yourself as Hokkein Hockchew then obviously no racism or trouble finding partners in Singapore. They most likely wont have trouble finding partners in taiwan, Malaysia, Japan, and SK. This is like caucasian British/Scottish most likely wont find no racism in USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

Growing up in Singapore in the 90s, we have moral education as a mandatory subject in primary school, kindness campaign on the TV screen and ads everywhere. For generations, people growing up in Singapore are encouraged to be considerate to others. Rather than racism, foreigners from other backgrounds, or people who were not influenced by the spirit of kindness, are more likely to experience discrimination, or feeling out of place when they are excercising their perceived human rights, and believes social harmony should be inclusive of their behavior with no awareness that they are being intrusive. When in doubt, just ask nicely. If we ask sincerely, I'm sure there will be people who are willing to explain whether its racism or perhaps a habit that is affecting the people around.

Having a car is quite troublesome in SG if u are not always traveling to places not covered by public transport. U need to find a parking lot and backtrack to pick up your car. You can't just go to nearby mrt to continue your journey. Of course one can't live without a car in USA, as there is little or not public transport in some places. When u r here, u need to adapt. U gain some lose some. Those reasons are all valid depending on your priorities. Swizzy becomes ambassadoress of SG. Try to explain things that westerners esp Europeans don't understand about SG. Racism is common in Singapore, but not openly due to racial discrimination act under Article 12 the Constitution Republic of Singapore. In all over the World they openly condemn or discriminate towards ethnic or religion. Such in Singapore ones they recorded and file in police report. That’s it 😂fine or jail term. Allot of Singaporean may or may not like other ethnic groups. The racism is very low compared to other countries which openly say whatever they want. Singapore is tolerance country. As for owning a car , I personally view - is not necessary. Public transport save u a lot of money than owning a car. Car Maintenance is a big issue, why 10 year validity because certain model cannot get spare parts. Do a bit of math n you will understand. It is a situation everyone facing no matter where they are. Different people have different preference and expectation. It is perfectly for them to leave Singapore if they feel it is not the country for them. Anyway there is no perfect country. One thing which is a bit disturbing is "expats feel that they do not enjoy the same benefits as locals". Well if they want the same benefits, just apply to be a Singaporean. Those who feel that way merely wants the best of both world for themselves. They are not genuine in wanting to be a Singaporean. So good they leave.

If you are only willing to date Westerners or within your race...complaining the dating scene here sucks...is not quite valid. What do you expect? Singapore is an Asian country in Asia, of course the dating pool will be predominantly Asians. It is like an Asian moving to Europe and complaining about the dating scene there because they only want to date Asians in Europe...

The 4 Singapore myths : 1 Competitive economy - sorry, no. It's a state run enterprise with government regulator operating as for-profit competitors. You're not allowed to compete against or overshadow the government run businesses. They own the market and they own you too. 2 Multi-cultural - sorry, no. Run by Chinese who put Chinese first. Walk into any board meeting or public board and you will notice this. Multi-ethic, OK sure. 3 it's innovative. This is what they say. But SG hasn't produced an innovative business or product in about 3-4 decades. The biggest companies are just knock-offs of other countries ideas. 4 Rule of law. Not really true when the judiciary is elected through the state, independence of the judiciary is highly questionable, the courts are just another wing of the government.

As a malaysian and having a singaporean sister-in-law and born in johor, i hv some inputs about singapore. Some good some not so good. 1. The size will be a restriction to expand. Reclaiming the sea is not going to help long term. So singapore needs johor land as well as land reclaimation. 2. The people generally are not too friendly. 3. Cars are extremely expensive there. This can be a positive or negative point because public transport becomes efficient. 4. Food is so so
