Defender tactical makes a mini shell adapter that allows the mossberg 500 to cycle mini shells all the way up to 3". Has been flawless in mine. My wife will only shoot mini 12 GA shells. Increases capacity too.

PA 1x microprism has a circle that corresponds pretty well to the spread of 12 ga 00 buckshot.

I'm here to condemn the Streamlight TL Racker. Yes, get a weapon light for your defensive shotgun, 100% there's no dispute for that. But the TL Racker is a poorly designed product, it's ergonomics are very awkward, that extra battery compartment bulge is unnecessarily bulky and puts your hand awkwardly low and makes it feel unnatural to hold. To begin with it's just 2 CR123 batteries, you shouldn't have a battery compartment that makes the forend anywhere near that bulky for what it is. That hump in the middle I've found often slams my index finger when firing and bruises my finger. In addition the polymer it uses isn't very durable and has bent and broken during installation/removal. The pressure pad works alright, but it works by having multiple buttons running under the pressure pad, as such you might need to apply slightly more pressure to activate the light, depending on where you're pressing, though I'd consider this to be negligible and a non-issue, just putting it out there. I have no experience with the Surefire light integrated forend, but if it's anything like a Surefire 628 for MP5's, it's probably also kind of awkward to hold onto. The best solution imo is to have a forend you can attach a conventional weapon light to, like a Magpul forend or whatnot. Also worth mentioning about Esstac imo is the fact that they sell 5 shell or 7 shell carriers, not just 6 shells only. Also their products are very durable and worth that price tag. The elastic bands are stiffer and thus hold the shells more securely than cheaper knock offs, which reduces the chances of your shells working their way loose and falling out while firing. Also this is personal preference, but I dispute the practice of shells pointed up or down, I prefer keeping them facing all the same direction for uniformity of training. There's no guarantee that when you need a shell for fast admin reloads or just for loading the tube you will have one facing in the direction you want. Better to have them all face the same direction and practice/train working from that. For example if I wanted to put one in the chamber and had the shells with brass down, it's easy to just use your thumb to push the shell out into your palm, then cup it into the chamber from below.

I have to agree with the “shell practicing” part. Because it sound like a trap when things aren’t going to plan. And self defense scenarios would usually end at less than a quarter of a tube. I didn’t want to burst anyone’s bubble. But if it was just for practicing and plinking, then that is all good.

I just got my 500 as my first long gun, full stock and only the 28" barrel, no upgrades yet. I want the stand-off barrel first, but still deciding on what to chose for the rest.
