After seeing Bully on this list I am reminded of Fable 2. You could smooch your spouse anywhere out in the open, and if you had a high "good" alignment people would walk up to you and cheer at you. Technically, they were cheering for how Right And Good you were, but it sorta felt like they thought the polygonal lip-lock maneuver was impressive. Even worse than this was when they would fully just wander into your home, _as if someone granted them the powers of a protagonist,_ and cheer for you and your spouse being considerably more intimate than just kissing.

Eh, Sonic and Elise is weird because they’re in ridiculously contrasting art styles (Sonic being a classic cartoony animal person, Elise being a realistic Final Fantasy-esque human). Conceptually, them kissing would be no less weird than Shepard in Mass Effect with all their various potential alien partners, Sonic being a sentient and sapient being. The issue of course comes from the differing art styles, since that highlights the uncanny feel of the abnormality. Look at Roger and Jessica Rabbit, they’re both extremely cartoony characters, which thanks to the existence of the live action human characters among the cast, just makes them look even less weird together despite Roger being a rabbit toon and Jessica being a human toon. Long story short, the only reason why it should be seen as weird is because the relationship itself, much like the story of the game (except Shadow’s for some reason being legit really good?), is absolutely dreadful.

I love the janky Dragon Age Inquisition kisses. Just because if you choose an dwarf or qunari as your player character, their romantic partners have to deal with the drastic height difference just to get a smooch. Personal favourites are Blackwall and Dorian trying to kiss their Qunari or Dwarf Inquisitor while breaking their necks.

I have another one: The first kiss of Hawke and Fenris in Dragon Age II. Something went quite wrong with the animation there. If I remember correctly, their lips don't even touch, but it looked really awkward for sure. At least that's how it was for me. And Fenris pushs Hawke against a wall, after having been startled by them and then they make out. I really like Fenris as a character and romance option, can't say anything about the other romancable characters and if the strange kissing animation is a recurring thing in DAII.

It's one of the tricky things to animate right, like hands. Ever notice many games hide when a character hands over an object to another character? It's hard to animate.

The Sonic one is really something special. It's not just that he's nominally a hedgehog and she's a human. It's not just that he's Saturday morning cartoon style and she's a final fantasy character model. Those things are serious problems they don't overcome. But even if they were visually the same, there would still be the issue of how different they are tonally. Sonic's writing and performance make him a fun* cartoon character when the rest of the setting matches that tone, but in this tragic high fantasy kingdom those same traits make him seem like a child. *Fun not guaranteed

That Sonic footage looked more like it was from one of those weird "Spider-Man and pregnant Elsa" videos rather than an actual Sonic video game -- partly due to the mismatched characters but also because of the awkward mocap animations.

Sonic & Elise feel fundamentally off as a pairing, despite none of the options in the Mass Effect series feeling like a problem at all. The Harkness Test would support all of those being perfectly fine, so it feels hypocritical to say that one interspecies relationship works and another doesn't, but despite that there's just something about the Sonic pairing that still just feels off. Maybe it's the "cartoon" factor?

In Final Fantasy 7, if you have Yuffie as your date at the Gold Saucer, she will give Cloud a kiss on the cheek in the gondola and admit she "just felt like doing that". Cloud doesn't reciprocate to the smooch and Yuffie notices and gets increasingly upset at being ignored. One snarky snark from Cloud later, you hear a loud audible slap over the romantic music suggesting Yuffie didn't appreciate not being taken seriously and gave him a big ol' slap.

Hot take - the Sonic one is not that bad The whole "true love's kiss saving someone" is a trope as old as fairy tales (Sleeping Beauty etc), Elise has been so sheltered and Sonic is the first person in her life who treats her like a person, the "Sonic doesn't do romance" argument doesn't hold up because he didn't initiate it anyway (he was dead), and yeah he's a hedgehog but come on...Harkness test. He's sentient and able to communicate with humans clearly. No difference between that and an alien from Star Trek or Mass Effect. If Shepherd can smooch aliens, Elise can smooch Sonic.
