One a.i companion that I really like is Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite, not only is she genuinely delightful to travel with, but she also doesn't get in the way when a fight happens. She also finds ways to make herself useful like opening locked doors with lock picks and tossing things like first aid kits, ammunition and bottles of salt when you need them. She can also open tears to help in a fight as well.

i think one of the absolute best examples of properly handling the walking speed issue with allies is ghost of tsushima. in that game, the ai actually matches the player speed, meaning that if you walk, they walk, if you sprint, they sprint, and when there is a forced walking section, both you and the npc walk together. They will even summon their own mount if you summon yours. it's honestly so satisfying

In Yakuza Zero (and other games on the series, I presume), when you have to follow a NPC, you can simple hold R2. No need to steer, wait or run to catch up. Releasing R2 let's you free roam again. Was surprised when I saw it, it's a simple but nice feature. Also, pretty much everybody moves at the same speed when following you, so no need to wait for them too.

I've lost a number of games due to an ai companion wandering right into my attack, then proceeding to turn on me and help the enemies beat me to a pulp when it's there fault they decided to walk between my weapon and the enemy, or run into a hoard of enemies making it impossible to spot them as I swing madly for survival...

_Wing Commander 2_ where each round counted as an attack, outside combat hitting a friendly three times made everyone hostile, and the _exact_ instant the last enemy dies combat officially ends. Sure, at first it was amusing to hear Doomsday's deadpan "I hate it when you do that." It's less amusing when you complete the mission, he continues flying between you and the exploding debris cloud that was the last Kilrathi fighter, and now everyone believes you're a traitor to humanity.

The great thing about #2, though, is that if you're replaying the game and you know what's coming, you can strip all the good gear off of whatever party member is leaving, and then they get to do their whole tense leaving scene in their underpants. God, yes. Pretty much every time you ally with anyone in Master of Orion closer than a basic trade deal, they will without fail start demanding you pick fights with the biggest other rival in the game on their behalf. On the plus side, it sometimes it works out kind of hilariously, when said huge rival is on the far side of their space from you, several turns away even if you wanted to send reinforcements, making your declaration of war is basically an empty gesture. They're thrilled enough at the prospect to sweeten the deal with cash and technologies, and you don't actually have to do anything if you don't want to.

Not a "most annoying thing", but in Twilight Princess, there's a sequence where you're accompanying a monkey through deadly fog as she waves your lantern on a stick to clear the fog from an area. You can't really get too far ahead, fall too far behind, or wander off without the fog taking you down. (The monkey taking a circuitous route could be its own problem.) But when you get to the end, the circle of no fog runs into a place with no fog, so you run into it, glad to be free... but the monkey urges you to come back to her so she can finally go where you just were.

#2 goes along with one of my earliest memories in video games. When I was a kid playing FFVII at a friend's house, the moment (spoiler alert) when Aerith got murdered, I panicked, thinking all her equipment was gone forever. Luckily you do get it back but, I mean, to be fair, that cutscene does show her materia falling off and sinking into a seemingly bottomless pool of water, so what was child-me supposed to think?? I felt guilty when I realized that I pretty much valued her equipment more than her actual life.

It wasn't that the characters didn't have voicelines upon release, but the party banner dialogue trigger was bugged and stupidly specific. It took 15 minutes of in game playtime (pausing in the menus didn't count) in the same area uninterrupted, to get one party banter. And so, you could spend hours in game not hearing the companions talk outside of cut scenes and quest/landmark specific party banter! Kingdoms of Amalur does the AI walking speed thing pretty okay for the most part. They just make them run full tilt wherever you need to go and have you chase after them. The trouble is when they get themselves killed and force you to reload a save because they weren't supposed to die and make you fail the quest. I have to skip the scenes after I fail a mission in Hitman's new Freelancer mode because of how Diana sounds when she's talking to 47. Yes, I know I messed up, Diana. No need to rub my face in it like that. All of these various issues just serve to prove why Elizabeth in BioShock Infinite is one of the best companions. She stays out the way, and I don't have to protect her from being kidnapped or killed. She throws me stuff when I'm low on health, salt, or ammo, and she opens up tears for stuff I need. I also don't mind her dialogue with Booker. It's one of the few games with a voiced protagonist that doesn't make me want to stab my eardrums out.

@@Hisha1303 On side quests, yes. The guy in Alabastra that you can help can definitely die. I was clearing out the guard towers for him and near the end he got way ahead of me on one run and kept getting killed before I could get there. The autosave was at a bad point, so I actually had to go back a bit earlier so I could keep him alive. When you're helping that camp in High Fulgen (just as you enter Alabastra) get all its people back, one woman in a cave can get killed. You also technically fail the whole quest if you got everyone back, but then someone dies in the final battle against the Tuatha. So yeah, NPCs can definitely die, but it's more down to bad timing and such than the game being difficult. I still play on the original hard difficulty, because the new Very Hard difficulty is bullshit. All they did was make enemies so damage spongy that weapons are nearly broken after just even a bit of fighting and it's not fun. The original hard difficulty is easy, yes, but it's at least properly balanced and actually fun. I do still die to annoying enemies like the damn crudoks and ettin.
@SolaScientia
@SolaScientia Жыл бұрын
@@Hisha1303 Now, main quest ones like Alyn and such probably can't die or be killed. I think Alyn just ignores the player if they attack her. There was one mission in the Fable series where, not only did you have to escort an NPC somewhere, but you were also required to hold their hand the entire time even though as one commenter/reviewer at the time had put it - they were "a grown-ass man". One of the things I dislike most about AI companions in video games is how incapable they are. They can be hardened killers with years of experience, yet have the accuracy of Stormtroopers. I really hated how in borderlands 3, Fl4k's spiderant pet had this really wonky collision detection where *it* could push you around and make you move when you were standing still, but was basically a ghost when *you* tried to push it out of your way/sightline. Coupled with how it seemed deliberately programmed to try at all costs to stand exactly one foot in front of you at all times, it resulted in this very annoying situation where spooderfriend was always in your face, constantly blocking your view of the loot on the ground, *and* could push you down cliffs, but there was nothing *you* could ever do to move it out of your way.

After winning or legging it, I got to my destination only to be met by a messenger with a letter telling me that Uthgerd the Unbroken or whoever had died, here's some money, but their gear is gone. The "walk faster than your walking speed but slower than your running speed" is pretty self explanatory though, it's so you can catch up if you dawdle but not force you to walk the entire way. Optimally they'd program them to match your speed but that's too much work I suppose
@HostileTakeover2
@HostileTakeover2 Жыл бұрын
I read somewhere about the reasoning for that walk/run speed. IIRC, the speed in between walk/run is so if you get stuck or wander off to the side a little they don't get so far away that you can't catch up. That they also implement a stop/wait to alleviate that speed problem but sometimes the NPC can get stuck. So it's easier to just go with a slower speed. But ultimately it's a choice between annoy people with the speed or risk even greater headaches if they don't.

Or what about Skyrim followers who keep triggering floor traps resulting in your death (too many instances to recount here)? Or what about companions/followers in games that seem to be completely impeded or flumoxed by a 2 inch change in elevation, resulting in them either getting stuck until they despawn or taking a massive and hilarious detour (Hunter and Warlock pets are notorious in WoW raids for causing wipes because you decided to jump and they decide to run through and aggro half the raid, resulting in a wipe).
