What I always found a disturbing detail in Fallout 4 wasn't a single thing, but rather the amount of skeletons you find next to toilets - people who survived the initial nuclear blasts, only to die from radiation sickness, vomiting their insides up. Thanks for that lovely little detail, Bethesda!

At the very opposite of the scale, there are two female skeletons on the roof of the Nuka-World bottling plant. They both have wedding rings on, which suggests they were a married couple who wanted to die in each other’s arms instead of out in the wasteland 😭

@philiphunn194 For all the humour and irreverence in the series, Bethesda sure don't hold back on the tragedy of it all. And rightly so - the games are all the better for it. The remains of the runaway in the cabin near the Abenathy Farm is another poignant detail. EDIT: In fact, details like these would make a good video in itself.

I actually find Pickman least unsettling. The man was possessed by an Eldritch horror and still maintained enough of a moral compass to only target and kill the people who hurt civilians. Considering how scrambled your brains would be with an indescribable horror living in them, his restraint is freaking steel. Honestly the sandwich is scarier.

I think at this point it would be more of a surprise to stumble across an isolated family or tiny village in an open world game. . .and have it NOT be full of cannibals. Like, these are just people who have carved out a life in a rather remote spot and are genuinely just friendly to visitors because they don't see people much. The player would be SO TENSE waiting for that other shoe to drop for the rest of the game. XD

The stone circle mystery in AC Valhalla is actually based on folklore. There are several stone circles in England (e.g. Long Meg and her Daughters in Cumbria and the Rollright Stones on the Oxfordshire/Warwickshire border) that are said to be uncountable, and myths about standing stones being people petrified by evil spirits or a curse are common.

There are tales of fairies moving stones around near me in the north of England, so I doubt that kind of story was uncommon. The main one I remember was they kept moving away stones people were going to use to build houses on fairy enchanted land. But once they surrounded the stone with iron the fairies couldnt mess with it and the houses got built.

The reaper leviathan skeleton down in the inactive lava zone from Subnautica always disturbed me. Up to that point in the game, reaper leviathans have been the most terrifying creatures that you've seen across the entire map (aside from void leviathans, potentially). They can kill you in one hit, destroy your seamoth in three hits, and if they spot you, will pursue you relentlessly. They hunt by echolocation, not sight, so turning off your lights won't protect you like it would with most of the other predators, and they have no bioluminescence and thus can sneak up on you easily. And then you find a skeleton of one about 1200 or so meters down. If you scan said skeleton, your PDA will inform that the reaper was eaten. The biggest, scariest, most aggressive predator in the ocean that has been hounding you ever since you first crashed, got EATEN. By something bigger. And then the sea dragon shows up.

The village's only residents are a kindly old couple who claim to told Folkert to go home and was later killed by wolves. Following the scent of rotting meat leads to the dismembered corpse of Folkert and is too damaged to determine cause of death. After confronting the couple they confess to eating him but insist wolves killed him. If you let them live and lie to the quest giver about Folkert's post death fate. I'm honestly unsettled by the number of things that are "exclusive" in Rockstar games. From missions and gold bars that are only available if you bought the game on their storefront, to timed exclusives for people getting the HD version of the game after playing it on the X360 or PS3 before it was released on the newer gen consoles and PC.

pickman isnt creepy, hes a public servant. i opened his inventory and gave him better armor, a nice gun and an upgraded version of his own knife. less raiders out there means a better commonwealth and considering i travel with a guy with a minigun and an actual tank, once hes done, he can either stop killing or get dealt with

The mass grave in the Tierra Robada desert in GTA San Andreas is all but confirmed to be the ex-husband corpse dumping ground of K-Rose radio station DJ Marybeth Maybell, who frequently comments on the 'accidents' in which her husbands have died and conveniently left her with all the land and money.

There's actually a short movie that came with the Special Edition of GTA SA and that acts like a prequel to the game's events; There we see two Sindacco grunts dumping the body of Mickey, the Sindacco member who ran the Caligula's Palace cassino before Ken Rosenberg took over, in that same place; The movie mentions he was killed as part of the deal between the Sindaccos and the Leones to fund the cassino, showing the graves in Tierra Roubada are a dumping ground of corpses for the Las Venturas mafia.

@@BeanManolo Ah yes The Introduction. I rewatched it after you said that and it turns out that pretty much the whole scene is always angled upwards and you don't really see the ground enough to confirm the exact place. You get enough to be sure they're out in the desert but you don't see inside the pit or if there are any other bodies. So basically there's no wrong answers, you could be right and so could I.

One of the disturbing things to find around in open worlds has to be those crying babies (Screamers) from Dying Light 1. They are no different than Snitches from L4D or the Howlers from Dying Light 2 in functionality, however they disturb me about 58 million times more because they are little 2 year olds, completely warped, crying and snickering... It disturbs me on a more deep level than just "If they see me, all zombies will be here within 5 seconds." I even feel like the first encounter with these baby zombies in the main quest was more memorable to me than the first encounter with the very heart-attack inducing volatiles.

I feel like half the side-quests in The Witcher 3 were creepy, unsettling, or messed up. The unfamiliar nature of eastern European mythological creatures definitely added to the unease as well. Off the top of my head, there are a few tragic ghost women, the three hags, and I think a haunted house.

the one I loved the most was a quest to retrieve a ring for an old woman, and then she casually mentions a battle that's about a hundred or more years ago. geralt remembers it, but he's a long lived witcher. she's just a human. and when he mentions the fact, she just disappears. turns out you got a contract from a ghost.

Though not really unexplained if you go through all the trouble to unlock the boss later, Nier: Automata got me really good wandering out into the desert sandstorm. I was trying to find an oasis area I'd been to before, only to suddenly start coming across enormous spheres, still in the sandstorm, with giant terrifying faces on them. (I hadn't even met Emil yet.) I nope'd out of that area faster than a rabid raccoon in a rainstorm.
