Unforgettable for sure. First expedition I went on was in '08 in the Boundary Waters. The nonsensical lightning drill had us get out of our canoes and stand on our PFDs daily for hours. Ended up having to pull 12+ hour days just to finish on time as a result. Had poison ivy everywhere, hundreds of mosquito bites, and foot rot too. Food was decent but all vegetarian. It was incredibly difficult - everyone, including the instructors, broke down multiple times. Unkempt portage routes causing unexpected delays, having to set up camp in the dark without time for a fire. Outward Bound made me realize what leadership was at a young age. One of those things that was absolute hell at the time, but you look back fondly. Even went on another expedition a few years later in the Ansel Adams Wilderness, which was physically more difficult but nowhere near as mentally difficult as the Boundary Water expedition.

Did this when i was a freshmen in high school, graduated in 2012. So like 2009-2010 is when i did it. It was in canoes in the mangroves and western coastline (gulf of Mexico) this made me a way stronger person mentally and i needed it. Also shows you how without fones family, friends, and everyone dont matter. Only things that matter are survival and not messing things up

I attended the Colorado Outward Bound School (COBS) the summer I graduated high school in the early 1970s for 4 weeks. I agree that what was presented here were myths. It was extremely worthwhile and a priceless experience towards my developement. The age range in our course was from 16 to 20 if I remember correctly and from all over the country. It's definitely not easy and pushes your comfort zone out beyond what you thought it was. The first several days our leader/instructor stayed with us all day, from where we hit the trail after breakfast to setting up camp for the night. After a few days he would appoint someone a leader (everyone got a chance to lead) and he'd tell us that he'd meet us at such and such a point on the map for lunch. After a few more days of this we'd say goodbye to him after breakfast and wouldn't see him again until we reached that day's destination at dinnertime. In this way he made us more and more self-reliant. Two summers later I rode a bicycle, alone about halfway across the United States. I'm positive that I wouldn't have even contemplated such a trip had Outward Bound not given me the self-assurance to do it, teaching me that most of our perceived limitations are self-imposed. This is the real core lesson of Outward Bound. Courses were not coed back then and my personal opinion is that it was better this way. In addition to the physical challenges it's a very introspective experience at times towards a greater sense of self-awareness. To add the social aspect of young men and women is something easily found back in society and I think that this might have been a distraction from the real work that goes on there. My team leaders/instructors were amazing men, real philosopher-athletes. At night around the fire our team of ten would have feedback sessions where we'd bounce insights off of each other. Definitely a formative experience that I'd highly recommend to anyone.

I went to Outward Bound in the 70s, and it wasn't coed. We did our program in Oregon, hiking and mountain climbing. It was hard work getting accustomed to the physical activity but what an incredibly beautiful place to be. I love the outdoors, anyway. The instructors weren't impressive. They didn't really want to engage with us, and it showed. They were just putting in their time and doing their own thing away from us as much as possible. Despite that, it was a memorable experience, and I really enjoyed it.

Why are USA Outward Bounds so expensive? Same duration, similiar activities and its 3 to 7 times more expensive than the UK.

I did it in Florida. But it was through the Juvenile Justice System. It was not this. It would have been fun. But the guides were absolutely nuts. I really enjoyed the night time canoeing. Gunnel up and take post.

I spent some time there as a kid and had a horrible experience, mostly because I became the pack mule for the group, and our councilors couldn't figure out how to keep water clean, they resorted to using iodine and water, then mixed it with some orange powder, it was vomit inducing to the point where me and other kids snuck out at night to get lake water from a small water fall

It seems really interesting and something i want to do. It all just feels weird and my friends sister went to the kind that i think basically kidnaps u and all that junk. I want to experience the adventures but not the corny or weird stuff that could happen.
