Unfortunately motor manufacturers have made near impossible to work on modern vehicles with the very complicated electronic systems fitted to them,the main dealers who have to invest millions for special test equipment is mind blowing and sending staff away all the time on courses is also very expensive, having worked in this industry for 44years my take on it ,put food on the table and pay your way first because these modern machines will bleed you dry!

That's why I think I'm going to stay with my analog 2016 Triumph Rocket III, and My analog 2014 Triumph Thunderbird LT. I was considering the 2024 BMW K1600B or the 2025 Triumph Rocket 3 Storm GT. Too much money for one, and costly to service & maintain because of the electronics.

Hmmm,,,, right to repair weaponizes and empowers incompetent folks that can lead to tragedy. It's not as simple as providing a service manual and turning loose backyard wannabe mechanics with the consequences possibly being an unexpected toss down the road. I'll opt for a certified, trained, educated and professional mechanic to work on my life support transport device.

Theres a big difference between more or less forcing owners to get their bikes serviced with BMW dealers , and not selling manuals to self service. To be honest no one can doubt the quality of BMW bikes, only their " Apple" type strangle hold on the owners to get them fixed in a BMW dealer. The first thing you notice on the R Nine T, there is no centre stand, making it hard to drain the oil. Also you need a special tool kit too, and then you cannot turn off the annoying maintenance/service light in the clock , even if you have managed to do a simple oil change. I believe with the correct electronics gizmos and other stuff that you need to buy, you can switch off that light. But as you can see, its a load of hassle, and any service on a BMW bike, is always quite expensive! Gone are the days when you lifted your motorbike , after warming the engine, pan under neath , drain the oil, check and change the airfilter, check the plugs, and off you go, £30 maximum! However, on the R Nine T to change the airfliter, if you need too, without taking off the tank, forget it! Definitely a bike designed, not with owner self service in mind!

My 2015 R9T had some wonky electrical issues on a 100% stock motorcycle, it’s a great bike when running properly but I’m back on Japanese bikes.

On 2021 r nine t model and later, you don't need to take off, and overall it's good access to everywhere in oder to fix it, comparing to other brands.

I am 72 year old and I ride a BMW 800 Gs Adventure. Last year around 10k. I am a "long rider" and yes...I am thinking in low down the weight...and be realistic, so ...i am thinking in change completely my way of riding: buy a Forza 350 Honda scooter...so I can enjoy more the cities... Because with my BMW loaded, I missed it. To heavy to ride around Berlin or Dublin...Most important: Don't think that you are INMORTAL.

I Boycotted BMW for their failure to recall their 2009 Fuel Strip Problem in BMW R1200 GSA. Completely their problem, and refused to fix their mess in Ireland. I will never again be fooled by BMW.

BMW 1200/1250 cc boxer engines have been Liquid Cooled since the 2014 models, hence the addition LC to the models. The cooling ribs are just there for the show.

The r12 and R12NineT actually still an air cooled boxer engine. The addition of LC that you are talking about is only applied to the GS, RT and RS.

@AGRIV8TD1963 No. I've owned a 2004 R1200GS, very good bike but I prefer a V- twin, like in a DL1000 V-Strom, another bike I've owned. Something about how a 90 deg twin is smoother and sounds better.

@rabola55 Then you have never heard a Triumph Rocket III with Carpenter Racing 2" full exhaust and 3 huge K&N filters sucking in air to a 12:1 compression engine. 260hp & 190ft/lbs of torque. Engine & Trans built to full race specs by Carpenter Racing. The coolest most unique sound on a bike! I went the Harley route for years, I'm 60 and had several of them. I got tired of Harley maintenance, Harley Snobs, & the cost of trying to get power from a Pig.

Out of 10 models made by bmw 9 are minor stuff : average machines, rarely Top quality. If brand new bikes are reported to have engine issues only after 100 miles and the company refuse to cover repairs under warranty , then this brand is garbage and its bikes are crap ! Ducatis are much upper compared.

I had to get rid of my GS it fianlly had way to many problems and the support i needed. I luckily bought a 22 pan america and it has been the best handling all around bike ever. I will NEVER get another GS ever again Reply
