Thankfully I handload. I just started testing with my newest 7PRC using H1000, 215 match primers, new ADG brass. I'm up to 2943fps with 69.0 grains of powder and no signs of pressure. I also have Retumbo, VVN565, 568, and 570 on hand I can try. I think I can get to 3000fps and if not, the reality is it's not needed but would be nice to achieve what Hornady advertises. I need to clock my 180 VLDs in my other 7PRC. I loaded 77.8 grains of LRT but that rifle has a 25" barrel. It shoots one hole. Didn't have my Garmin with me that day though Factory Federal ELDX is in the mid 2900s for me but shoots like crap in 3 of my 7PRCs and decent in one of them - around an inch

Would love to see the 565 results… it SIMS well on case fill and burn. Velocities as well. If you load that please drop a note here… I’ve had a few people smarter than me tell me it’s a little slow for their setup.

@@BeaterJeep I'm guessing they have short barrels then. If N570 is working well in my 270-7PRC, in theory it stands to reason something with a bit faster burn rate should work well in a 7PRC. Just wish I could find some N560 to try as well.

Did y’all watch the interview with Seth from Hornady on Ron Spomer Outdoors? He goes over what happened with the velocities. And I get what he was saying, but I don’t understand why they wouldn’t just change the literature on the box. Unless they had already printed oodles of boxes.
@zach_6.813
@zach_6.813 5 ай бұрын
If you know the product going out the door isn’t the product in the box then you’re lying to the consumer. Regardless what packaging they have on hand. No different than selling something you know is defective. False advertisement. But it’s also been well documented of hornady falling short on velocities for a while now. Especially the cartridges they introduce to market. In my opinion they have good components but they are no different than a shady car dealership and I won’t buy hornady for that reason. They knowingly screw over consumers and wouldn’t have said a word if they weren’t being called out by every individual with a chrony .
@xforce708
@xforce708 5 ай бұрын
I’m not saying I agree with them not changing the boxes or at least putting something up on their website. But what Seth says in the interview with Ron Spomer at least helped me understand. And I can’t be hating on Hornady because during all of these shortages here in my part of the country the shelves have a ton of Hornady on the shelves while Nosler, Swift, and others have been way too hard to find.

@@xforce708 oh absolutely, to each his own, I would never suggest anyone else take the same stance on them as I do. In my opinion it’s black and white you either sell a lie or the truth no gray area. All they had to do was release a statement, update a package and all would be forgiven by most. But this isn’t new for them . Lots of complaints about the creedmoor in the beginning when they were the only ammo producer, then the 6.5 prc was advertised as one hot rod and many people were seeing creedmoor realm velocities, and the 7 prc appears no different. Speaking exclusively to hornady ammunition . Other manufacturers have been able to measure up. The company just is not for me but I have seen them shoot well . I don’t has a disdain for them but I choose to spend my money elsewhere besides the federal/speer umbrella has had a better bullet and better accuracy for me in every firearm I owned* across the board .

A little late to the party here but, does that Ruger Go Wild barrel actually measure 24" or does that include the muzzle brake?

This is one of the more fair reviews I have seen. As for boxes having not had the labeling changed, much of the ammo I have seen usually does not quite match the box MV. There has to be some tolerance, even with the tight SAAMI spec on 7 PRC because they do not know if this is going into a hand-built custom rifle or a Ruger Wild Country or Mossberg Predator. The Precision Hunter may actually be slower and if all the store ammo is hovering around 2800 fps, then adjust the ballistic calculator for that. Where it shines is having a heavy bullet with high bc. Some people care about impact energy, I care about impact velocity, what is required for the particular bullet to function as designed. And the 175 gr is bringing the wallop out to 750 yards, which is farther than I am going to shoot at just about any game animal. More likely, I will be 400 yards and in because of where I hunt. Or, one can buy Federal and be closer to the velocity desired. It is still a good cartridge design and it does fill a market roll. Having a factory precision rifle and round off the shelf that shoots pretty well. And those people still using 7 Rem Mag, those are fine. I have seen a few guys getting an elk with 2 or 3 shots from a 7 Rem Mag. Of course, that means being quick on the follow-up. In fact, Ron Spomer, mentioned below, took three shots at an elk on the move with his Mossberg Patriot 7 RM. That video has now been moved to a private site behind a paywall. I am not sure why and it has never been explained and probably never will be explained.

You can easily attain 3000fps with the 175gr ELD-X in 7mm Rem Mag handloading, with no signs of pressure (including measuring the case heads before and after with micrometer looking for case head stretching). Unfortunately, with factory ammo, the 7mm Rem Mag has been hobbled by a poor (re)writing of the SAAMI spec. The biggest advantage the 7mm PRC has is the standard throat reamer has a nice shallow 1deg rather than the steeper throat used commonly in the 7mm Rem Mag. The 7mm PRC is a fine cartridge, it's just the Hornady ammo that sucks.

If shooting a hornady eldx 175 at 2800fps, it is no different than a 7mm mag and can not hold 1500ft-lbs past 700 as opposed to the (false) advertised 3000fps.

😂 I Really Don't Understand All The Hype of the 7mm prc "Outperforming" The 7mm Remington Magnum (And, Certainly Not By Much Either - As the Nosler Manual Only Lists the 7mm prc Having a 30 ft/s "Advantage", Handloaded With Their 175 Grain Nosler ABLR Bonded Bullet)? 🙄 This "Feat" Can Easily Be "Outdone" With Any of a Number of the Bigger 30 Caliber Cartridges! Even When You Look At The 7mm Weatherby Magnum Velocities, You Can Easily Get 3,000+ ft/s With That 80 Year Old Cartridge and It Will "Outperform" Either the 7mm RM or 7mm prc (Even While Using Temperature Stable Powders, It Will Achieve Over 3,000 ft/s - See the Nosler Online Manual) While Shooting a 175 Grain Bonded "Hunting Bullet"! Additionally, The 40 Year Old Lazzeroni Tomahawk Can Also Achieve 3,000+ ft/s Shooting That Same 175 grain "Hunting Bullet" From a "True Short Action Cartridge" - Which The 7mm prc is Really Not, As It is Actually Using a "Standard Length Action" - And, It Will Do It Less Powder Too! So, There is Really Nothing "Special" About The 7mm prc and It's "Performance"! 🤥 So, If You Really Want "True Magnum Velocities and Power" (Say, Another 500+ ft/s or More of Aditional Velocity) With a 180+ grain "Hunting Bullet" - Bonded or Monolithic Solid Bullet, Which is Not Even Offered Yet For the 7mm Caliber - Then You Just Step Up To The "Big 308/30 Caliber Cartridges" and The "Problem is Completely Solved"! Class Dismissed! 👨‍⚖

The .30 cals can't match the BCs of the 7mms without stepping up to 230+ grain projectiles that require faster twists than most .30 cals come equipped with. The only .30 cal that can hang with the 7mm PRC in its factory guise is the .300 PRC, and of course, launching a 245 gr Berger Elite at 2700 fps requires either a heavier rifle than most people are willing to pack up a mountain or a higher recoil tolerance than most people have for extended shooting sessions required to compile a dope card and stay proficient at long range. Hornady did their homework. They have the most accurate G7 BC data, verified by 3rd party testing, and the 7mm has the highest BCs of any projectile up to the super heavy .30s. The problem is that most 7mm and .30 caliber cartridges have too slow of a twist rate to optimize these projectiles. Shooting a 7mm 180 gr ELD-M with its industry leading .401 BC requires an 8 twist or faster. That means you can get a custom barrel for your 7mm Rem Mag and handload for it, or you can plug and play a 7mm PRC with a rifle and ammo you buy at Cabelas. My reloading room got turned into a nursery. We can't afford to move to a bigger house in this economy and I don't have space to handload in the house I am in. Being limited to factory ammo has made me more aware of industry support, and I appreciate cartridges that have enough support to reach their ballistic potential without custom rifles and handloads. That is the appeal of the entire PRC line. You're leaving vast amounts of performance unobtainable with those 7mm and .30 caliber cartridges. No, if you compare any .30 cal projectile you can stabilize in a 10 twist, you most certainly can not smoke a 7mm 180 gr ELD-M at 2950 fps with your non-PRC .30 caliber magnum. It isn't muzzle energy that matters. It is energy on target. Any .30 cal magnum that can beat the 7mm PRC is going to have its own problems. The ability of the 7mm PRC to shoot high BC VLD bullets from factory rifles and ammo in a rifle light enough to pack with recoil manageable enough to practice with leaves it pretty comfortably at the top of the pile in its own niche for a lot of people. Facts. The only real fault of the cartridge is not its performance but rather the relative obscurity of standard long actions. Most just shoehorn it into magnum long actions, which doesn't fully utilize the cartridge's advantages. If you're willing to have some extra space in your receiver, the 7mm PRC is a dandy cartridge that does a lot of things right without a lot of competition.

@@Matt-en1kn overall, I’m not a fan of any of the non-bonded and/or fast expanding bullets - just my opinion . I’ve seen mixed results with ELDX testing, but mostly good. Actually nice results. They’ve worked on the controlled expansion aspect and the mechanical “bonding”…… it may be as good as it’ll get with that style bullet. Seems to work best when it’s slowed down - which is logical.
