All of these women have a timeless beauty on their side and could wear anything and still achieve that elegant look. My advice for the over 60's is wear whatever makes you feel comfortable and what you feel good in, especially shoes boots etc. I'm a farmer. I have several mix and match outfits/shoes/coats/ scarfs and newly bought [years ago] matching underwear items for 'going out' in, all expensive in their day [cashmere, lace and silk] mostly gifted to me or bought from 'high end' charity shops, they still fit and I look after them.

All these wonderful clothes. Today’s designers do not give a darn about older women. Their many concern is the younger population who buys something new for every little event. The majority of older women find a comfortable style for themselves selves and wear them over and over again. Maybe because we realize the clothes cost money, which not all have said money when on social security or small budgets.
@kibbylollabee1259Ай бұрын
I live in an urban area and travel frequently. In the midwestern and southern states older women dress so differently and I think they don’t notice how unflattering it is because that seems to be all that’s available in the shops. Some of the defiant comments here that “I’ll wear what I want to wear” may come from that - there is literally nothing else for them, and everybody else wears the same kind of thing, so they are more comfortable in that mode of dress. But it’s very sad to see. Putting yourself together in the morning should be fun, even if all you’re doing is going to the supermarket.

If staycationing in Hawaii, the choice of floral prints and colors differentiate the tourists from the kamaa'inas: The bold prints and floral patterns in mumus that assault the senses, and are worn by the entire family, very "costumey" --- used to be sewn by the Watumulls (ancestry: India) and are available off the rack; The reverse prints and tapa look were high end Aloha wear available at Reyn Spooner and Reyn Men's Wear (fabrics are manufactured in Japan in limited quantities). These are worn by bank officers and CEOs; The missionary mumu look with delicate embroideries and ruffles (worn by Candice Bergen in the "Wind and the Lion" were available at boutique shops of Carol and Mary; The vintage Aloha wear with coconut buttons or MOP (mother of pearl) are one of a kind collectibles that are priced from USD 5k; Silk prints with leather accents are available in Korean and Hongkong boutiques. No wonder women hate to look older or getting older being told you can’t wear this or that, not that colour, definitely no big prints or bright colours, it’s rubbish, flat pumps are not easy to wear for everyone because they are too flat, I can’t wear a heel because of my knees, but I will wear whatever I want no matter if it “fits with my age” or not, I’ll wear whatever colour makes me feel good. Someone could be all in black and feel great while the person next to her could be in bright pink and feel great, I don’t believe many women wearing fifty shades of beige all the time really feel great and my twin grandsons will soon wreck that beige colour as I’m a hands on nanny, I’m in their giant playpen with them. If I put something on and it doesn’t feel right to me anymore then I know I’m not going to wear it again, the same if I try on new clothes, if it feel good and right then I wear it, I’m not supposed to wear oversized clothes being a plus size lady but I don’t care for someone telling me at my age I don’t know myself or how to feel about my clothes because you should know at 60.

I get that some of the more contrasting items can overwhelm the look but I always thought larger prints and stripes made you look bigger. So I’m confused.
@ellenmatteo3254Ай бұрын
I say skip the stripes. Neutral solid colors are more classic - in my humble opinion.
@FashionAndBeauty60Ай бұрын
Thank you for your thoughtful suggestion! Neutral solids are definitely timeless and so versatile. Great point! 😊

I go with classic, sometimes a great color, but I don't look like these women. I don't look that old. I have always worn the clothes, they don't wear me. I don't think giant polka dots do for any age, nor do I think only neutrals are necessary. I look great in red dress. Classics with a little twist look good. The important thing is not to wear clothes that don't fit or look like you've poured yourself into something that's a size too small. You can have an accessory that's a bit trendy, but not one an 16 year old would wear. Accent your positives, not your not so positives. If you want to wear something with a smaller pattern, it's better than a giant one. Don't bother with what the stores dub old lady stuff. Wear that small pattern in a flattering fit and ad a neutral accessory. Wear the clothes, don't be a mannequin for some trend.

I always preferred solids, they don't compete with your face.

Such a great point! Solid colors really let your natural beauty and facial features shine. Thank you for sharing your preference! 😊

Thank you for sharing! Beige can indeed be tricky, and not every shade works for everyone. It's all about finding what makes you feel and look your best. 😊

Regarding the loud patterned fabrics and bright coloured fabrics these should be worn away from the face as skirts because the important subject here is the top half, but some of these clothes no woman would want to wear of any age never mind the older lady, ghastly huge flowers etc., its not just the size of the patterns and prints, its the colours and cut of the clothes I think by the time we have reached 70 we know what suits us and what does’nt. Most of us know what colours suit our complexions, what suits our shapes, you have not mentioned here the various shapes of the body’s of the older woman which is very important, with out good under garments nothing is going to look good on an older woman

One thing which struck me is how fat the model looked in some outfits, while in others trim, slim and well put together. Ditch the huge gaudy motifs: maybe if you have South American heritage it could pass - at a pinch.

Some well thought through ideas but the sad thing is the consistent "tone it down and dont stand out so much" nature of all these recommendations. It goes along with the thinking that over 60 we are, and should be, invisible. This is so opposite from how many of us feel. We feel we want to claim and show our true identity and it is just sad to get an underlying message that we better blend in or we will look ugly.
@diana6842Ай бұрын
I didn't take it that way. I took it as clothing that is overly loud and busy distract from our natural beauty and to be honest, it does for people no matter their age. Last summer, I was on a weekend getaway with family. One day I wore a casual, solid navy dress and two people told me I was beautiful. (That hasn't happened in a while) The other day, I wore a loud print dress and one person said my dress was pretty. Not that I go around hoping for compliments and approval, but it's obvious the loud print dress was what caught others' attention and my face faded into the background.

It's not about others opinions. It's what makes you happy what ever that is. But if you are someone who enjoys clothing then my thoughts on this video is that I agree only with the last third of this video. It can be challenging to find clothing that is flattering. I have that larger tummy and behind. A princess waist is closer to the breasts than your waist. This can help with both tummy and behind issues in dresses. For a dress that doesn't look so good in the afore mentioned areas here is what I do. If the dress is a solid add vest, jacket or shrug in a print. Visa versa if the dress is a print. Don't go too long. I find covering the lower back and top edge of my behind brakes me up and keeps protruding body parts not obvious. But if I go longer on these items it makes me look frumpy. My favorite clothing stores were Christopher and Banks (classic cut clothing that never went out of style) and Dress Barn. Unfortunately they are both no longer in business in walk in stores. I learned so much from the sales girls and am forever grateful for there knowledge. Especially from Christopher and Banks stores. Hope this helps someone out there.

If you like a clothing on yourself, then go with it. The big problem for me 5'10" is finding pants that are long enough
@diana6842Ай бұрын
My 86 year old mother has the opposite problem. She's 5' with very short legs - and shrinking by the day. Trying to find clothes for her is practically impossible. Even petites are too long. I'm thinking about taking her to the kids' clothing section to look.

Most are, because they were taught to be people's pleasers. Only few break free. I'm working on a healthy balance, an in between solution.

Thank God, somebody did this video. Women who wear lots of prints and flowers look ridiculous and it looks cheap. Nothing says, sophistication more than a column of color and a solid blazer, ladies stop wearing something that looks like it should be a curtain in the kitchen or a tablecloth with lots of flowers on it. Tone it down stop with the prints, they make you look old they make me look old. I do this for a living. I constantly tell clients to look chic look in your closet and pull out anything that has flowers and crazy patterns on it. You will do better to just wear no patterns. Wear nice material and keep your clothing minimalistic and you can then play up your accessories if they are of quality and you will look fabulous.
