I moved here back in May from Illinois. I’d just survived the Chicago winter and went straight into a Tucson summer. It was brutal! But now that I’m experiencing my first mild winter, I love it here. Tucson is a hidden gem in my humble opinion.

I definitely understand coming from a cold area. I spent the last 20 years in Northern Wyoming in the winter there's are absolutely brutal. 2 years ago I moved to Tucson in september and it was kind of weird because I went from almost early winter weather to Summer again. I've spent two Winters down here now and I absolutely love it. I still go back up to Wyoming but it's usually for a month or less just to visit my kids

2:23 on the contrary Tucson is walkable. It’s just that people prefer driving because it’s easier, safer and less time consuming. I take the bus here and there (luckily it’s still free) and walk anywhere I feel like but I do live in the city whereas before if I didn’t have a car, good luck.

I grew up in the Midwest but lived in the Tucson area (Sahuarita) for 7 years before moving out to the East Coast for work. It wasn’t so much the heat that would wear on me since I expected it to be hot. It was that the heat goes on for so long in comparison to other parts of the country. In September when you might expect it to cool down (bc of change of seasons elsewhere), it stays hot. October moderates a bit but it’s really not until November that you really feel like you get major relief. Having said that, though, I miss Tucson more than anything, and would trade back East Coast winters for the heat in an instant. I wanna get back to Tucson ASAP! As for terrible drivers-how about here in the DC area where people will run you over and tailgate you all day with no remorse? Gimme Tucson driving any day, please!!! Apparently not as much as the southwest from CA to TX. So you experience in Houston is a part of that. Tucson ranked the 4th worst city in the country for drivers according to Forbes, and also seems to be near the top across other national worst driver lists, too. Just an excerpt: - Tucson ranks fourth highest for the total number of fatal car accidents (16.21 per 100,000 city residents). - It also ranks fourth highest for the number of people killed in fatal crashes (17.02 per 100,000 city residents). - Tucson has the sixth highest number of fatal car accidents involving speeding (4.94 per 100,000 city residents). - The city holds the 10th highest spot for the number of fatal car accidents involving a drunk driver (4.35 per 100,000 city residents). - Tucson reports the 10th highest number of fatal car accidents involving a distracted driver (1.1 per 100,000 city residents).

I think Iraq was the hottest for sure, but Afghanistan was hot as well. I do like the dry heat compared to the high humidity. As far as bad drivers, I think they are everywhere. We miss Tucson all the time. We’ve lived all over and currently live in the exact opposite climate lol. But for us, it was the heat and crime and bad school systems that made us not want to raise kids there. I couldn’t believe how many times our vehicles got vandalized or stolen and we didn’t live in a bad part of town. Plus the meth choppers flying overhead at night. A mail/package theft. A whole lot of that. And when we would file police reports to let them know, they blamed us for having mail in our mailboxes. Basically saying we should have expected crooks to be around. So stuff like that. But it still calls us all the time. Something special about it.

I just moved here from the PNW 3 months ago. Here are my thoughts: the lack of green doesnt bother me. I think there is actually a lot of green (especially after it rains) its just a different green. I think its beautiful in a different way than back home. The dry heat was the appeal for me, and the dry air. I love how a 90 degree feels like a 70 degree day and the dry air has been good for my eczema. The homeless problem is a problem everywhere. Nationwide. Even cities like Anchorage have a huge homeless problem. Its just something we have to learn to live with no matter where we live. I think its walkable, its just hot and most people are lazy and dont like to sweat. Its not the most walkable place, but the public transit that does exist is free and the weather is typically nice enough to be walking. Yes, the drivers here are so dumb. And the potholes are a major concern. Thats the only part of your list I agree with.

Potholes are because the dirt under the pavement moves after rain and monsoons. When it rains in Tucson the dirt doesn't easily absorb the water because the rain falls very fast that when it hits the surface it travels, and thats from underneath a very short depth of dirt our lands are hard rock. It makes digging holes very hard, thats why because its a very hard rock under a bit of dirt. So when the dirt moves under the pavement it forms holes and then the pavement crumbles in those spots creating "Potholes".

Tucson has a lot of problems. The sheer amount of drug addicts, homelessness, and crime is staggering. From the airport traveling northbound on craycroft, past Ft. The city is filed with snowbirds/retired folks and U of A student’s. That city is dirty and ran down, unless you’re upper middle class and can afford a home in the foothills.
