Is Colombia the right place for you?
There are tons of reasons why Colombia is the right country to relocate to. But there are also a lot of reasons why not. I will talk about 7 reasons why people might reconsider moving to Colombia.
What are the reasons to reconsider relocating?
Getting to know a new culture, is surely one of those reasons. You might have been born and raised in a totally different kind of culture. And it might be hard to adapt to new habits, therefore, you might reconsider moving to Colombia. It is surely a challenge especially at the beginning to adapt to another culture.
Learning a new language is another reasons why someone might reconsider living here. If you don't speak any Spanish but still want to live in a country such as Colombia you can't but have to learn the language. English is not widely spoken here and it will be hard with no Spanish at all. If you can't imagine yourself learning a new language or if you are not willing to learn a new language, Colombia might not be the right place for you. You will miss out on a lot of things because of the lack of language skills.
And another one is stability. Stability doesn't go well with Colombia, meaning that everything can change pretty fast. Don't forget, that Colombia hasn't been stable for a long time and is still in the process of recuperating itself. There is still a lot to improve in order to make this country stable but meanwhile we have to accept it the way it is. If you are not the type of person to take a risk and rather stays in a place that gives you more the feeling of stability and security, then again, Colombia might not be the right place.
Watch the whole video in order to hear the other points, why Colombia might not be the right country for you. After watching the video it should be clearer to you if you still want to move to Colombia or not.
Don't hesitate to contact us with any Expat questions you might have. No matter if you've got questions about Medellin, Bogota, Santa Marta or Colombia in general. We would love to support you on your journey.

I have had a couple of drivers tell me I have been one of the 1st American "gringo" that even tried to chat with them. I had wonderful guides and tours around the little towns around Medellin. It was super fun! I've noticed american rudeness in many places, and sometimes it's not really rudeness here in the US, we've focused a great deal in our own culture about Direct Communication, as you mentioned. I've also found that doesn't work well in many other countries. in Asia omg it's even more important. I always start a conversation with someone in Colombia asking forgiveness for my Spanish, (even though I speak spanish fairly well) it really does go a very long way with connecting with people.

One thing about Colombia and most Latin American countries you will notice is just how sterile our society in the USA and other major western powers is. The people in Latin America aren't in general as materialistic, greedy, and stuck up as we are in America. That's why I fell in love with my Colombian Fiance.

I remember a college professor's once telling us that when you're dealing with American students, you can't just teach language, you always have to be teaching manners along with it! For example, even if you do speak the language, you don't just go barging up to somebody, demanding, "Que hora es?" People will just walk right past and not even acknowledge your presence! On the other hand, if you gently approach someone and say, "Perdoneme, puede Usted decirme, por favor, que hora es?" chances are the person will be delighted to help you out!

They saw that I was making a huge effort in communicating with them, and they too want to learn English. It was the same when I visited Argentina, and Mexico back in the late 90s, SO, if you put in the time and energy to learn Spanish, it can and will go a long way, Plus I grew up in a largely Spanish neighborhood so being in a country like Columbia, or Mexico, I think that I would blend right in.

One more things that is very hard to get used to is dealing with Customer service, and bills etc.. It is really easy to do that in the US. The US is a culture where the customer is always right (not quite the same in Colombia.

Thanks for your helpful content! 🙏🏼 I’m heading to Cartagena in a few days, and want to take a bus 🚎 or plane ✈️ to Medellin after a week or so of arriving as I’m interested in exploring Colombia, as well as the digital nomad/solo traveler scene, especially in Medellin, and Bogota after that. I’m hoping you might have a few tips for me on safe budget hostels, or living options in Cartagena/Medellin for a few weeks at a time. Hopefully where I can have my own room and be close to places like cafes where I can do work online (need WiFi) and not have to deal with unsafe areas. I’ve found some options via AirBnB and Expedia etc, and I thought I’d reach out and ask you for any tips you might have. I know very little Spanish and aim to learn fast via immersion once I’m there. Also, any tips on good travel insurance, bus/airlines that could get me around from city to city? Thanks so much in advance, I know I’m asking a bunch of questions, but any advice would help! 🙏🏼 Cheers!

Having a car in Colombia is the most normal thing, although both coexist, because the number of motorcycles in Colombia is almost equal to the number of cars, and that also happens because there are many people who have both, but in Bogotá there is a problem , because we are overloaded with cars, and that's another point, if not I don't like eternal traffic jams and chaos, definitely Colombia is not the best country to live in, because traffic jams and overloads in public transport are normal in Colombia, it does not matter if the city is large or small, the same happens in all the cities.

I don’t agree with the politeness part. Yes Colombians will greet someone nicely, but I actually feel like people from the United States are more polite to all people around them. During my time in Colombia, in particular Medellin , i seen a lot of class discrimination. People of lower class were not treated the same of people of higher status. I did like the culture, but colombia does have this superficial like aspect to it, i felt like if you were not an “ingeniero” or un “doctor” or had some type of job that appeared to make money you were not treated the same as a bus boy. Take that and couple it with this slight racist view to black colombians. I did not see many black Colombians in positions of power, or in any jobs that will allow them to be classified as middle or higher class. Colombians need to come together and allow everyone to have the opportunity to succeed, to allow more class mobility in the country. Until then, colombia will always struggle to become a great country.

My sentiments as well. However, I thought about this while watching the documentary. Think about the world, it’s like this everywhere in the world. So my thought process is that our creator created it to be that way so that us as humans, can use our reasoning, problem-solving, and decision making processes. Idk 🤷🏽‍♀️…It’s like that in America with us people of color. Colorism… Black people come in all shades and within our spectrum of shades, we have people who dislike a different shade of black and will discriminate against their own people because of their shade. That happens all over the world. So sad.

Carry only as much cash as you need for the day..... leave the credit cards and rest of your cash in the safe at your hotel. Go back and get more if you need it. Sometimes robberies do happen there and so it is better to leave the majority in a safe. It is a beautiful country and the majority of people there are very friendly. If you go to Cartagena to crowded areas just keep your eyes open. I love the country and have a good woman there. Most likely, I'll live there the rest of my life..... beats living in the USA.

Everyone is the east coast is a miserable hag, extremely rude , and they think the world revolves around them . I would know I’m from the east coast lol luckily I learned manners and just normally a nice person . I’m also Colombian and living here for a few months with family . It’s a breath of fresh air to be around such nice people and who are humble .

Fun fact, we've had a stable democracy in Colombia for over 63 years. That might not seem impressive but look at the entire region and you'll see were are among the most stable, in terms of democratic stability. Very unlikely for that to change any time soon.
