Car culture, just like on the mainland, ruins life everywhere, especially on an island with limited urban land area. They need to seriously consider a gondola system of transportation. To move people around. SERIOUSLY. Like the ones they use in large ski resorts to get people around. Gondolas can carry 5 to 50 or passengers depending on the size and design. They could build one to go from Honolulu following the highway over the Pali to Kanehoe on the north shore. It's cheaper to build a gondola system in faster construction time. A few towers strung with steel cables between moving hundreds of passengers per hour across the island. Less environmental impact of all that concrete. Check out the system the use in Bogata, Columbia in their hilly city with no room. Check out the gondola system at large ski resorts in Aspen,Co. or Sqaw Valley, Lake Tahoe,CA. We're considering one hear in Austin, TX where our traffic is bad and getting worse.

Thanks for the tips man! I'm still stoked to have moved here! But living with relatives is pretty much the only way I could make that work.. no worries though! Super fun skate parks, super fun hiking, and super fun climates! Also best place to ride a motorcycle! (If you stay aware of the traffic hours)

Born and raised on Oahu, but living in So. Cal for the last 40+ years. The main reason I don't think I can move back to Oahu is due to the horrible traffic! When we come back to Oahu for vacation, we have to plan our daily activities based on rush hour traffic - so irritating. And if happen to be in the wrong lane on Piikoi trying to get on to the H1 forget about it!!! Still LOVE Hawaii though.

Been to Hawaii many times as a kid on vacation. Took a vacation there as an adult right before wuflu hit. Your analysis of the train boondoggle is spot on. Light/high speed rail is just another slush fund grab no matter where it is. The home prices there are absolutely fucking nuts. I bought a 4BR 3BA house in South Dakota for 302K this year. Hawaii's brain drain will only get worse due to cost of living and the state's love of taxes.

A minimum wage hike would only increase the cost of an hour of labor. Which raises prices of everything. You would have a short period, a few months, where it seemed like people made.more. then the prices start going up to pay for the extra money going to workers. The ceos or people In the business department aren't taking a pay cut to pay the workers salaries.

Im curious, have you ever owned your own business? what would you imagine happens to a business owner and their employees when the government demands that they pay a specific amount? I used to own a dry cleaning business (hurricanes destroyed it) and if i was forced to pay more per hour i would have to lay off people or increase my prices. An increase in prices would end up causing people to ask/ demand more money which would then cause me to increase prices or lay off more people. with regards to the service industry, i would be cautious to demand more money when moat of your job could be replaced by an Ipad.

forget about Oahu to live in unless you make over $90,000.00 a year then you can just make it by yourself, if you have a family forget it you'll need an income of over $125,000.00 to handle a mortgage or rent plus car parking, gas food clothes and so on.. Take this post seriously. Though I am earning a 6 figure income here, my dollars are stretched very thin. It is very expensive AND if you like ordering things ONLINE, a lot of stores do not ship to Hawaii (and if they do ship, the shipping cost may be greater than the item being purchased). And if you go around your local Target or Walmart or Best Buy stores, the stuff you look for have a 50% chance of being OUT OF STOCK. I don't even drive anymore because of the cost of gas (over $4 per gallon) and am taking the bus daily ($5.50 per day). It's as if Hawaii is a different nation. I am missing a lot of conveniences I took for granted in the mainland. And for what? The beaches? I only visited the beaches regularly the first three months here...now, I have not gone in a couple of months. The homeless situation is a little shocking at first. When I lived in San Francisco, your typical homeless person is elderly (over 50 perhaps). Here, probably half of them are YOUNG (under 40). Holy Crap. There's just a sense of hopelessness here. I miss the mainland, and after my contract is done, I am relocating back to Texas. God I miss Texas....

@StruckByStars2 жыл бұрын
I know there is some natives that hate mainlanders or have bad incidents with each other, but it’s not that common or even to the point where they would be harmed or forced out of their homes. I’ve seen people with car with stickers before saying “go back to your home mainlanders” and some incidents where they’ll get into it with a local but for the 99% of the time it doesn’t happen of course unless you try to do something harmful or have bad intentions to do so. The island is actually pretty filled with a lot of mainlanders and no one bothers them. It’s just like living in any other place in the U.S. everyone just minds their business and lives their life

No. You do not have a wage problem. You have a housing problem caused by your local governments no build policies. Increasing the minimum wage will only do one thing, raise rents and increase already high prices of consumer goods such as food and gas. The wage hike in Seattle did not help out low wage workers but rather stole jobs from them. The goods and services at store, shops, and restaurants have very little profit margins. As such when you raise minimum wage, the result is LAYOFFS. As I said previously, the issue is housing. You need to vote out these politicians and deregulate your housing sector. You need to pass statutes which allow Hawaiians to form community districts which PROHIBIT VRBO's and out of town rentals. This will prevent mainland, Japanese, and Chinese foreign money from coming in and buying these houses for rental properties and vacation homes. The goal is to protect new house and condo construction from being bought and used for vacation rentals or millionaire second homes. This can be done by not allowing VRBO activity and place requirements on mandatory occupancy per year or stiff property tax based on the current value of the home.

You have a very poor understanding of how raising the minimum wage effects the economy and affordability of goods and services. Raising the minimum wage would also raise the cost of cleaning, painting, landscaping, groceries, transportation...and before you know it all you have done is create inflation - if there is relief to low income earners it is brief.

So bring up minimum wage again and then talk about how expensive toilet paper and food cost are in Hawaii. You do realize the majority of cost is due to everything being shipped to the island. This means the only ELASTIC COST, this means a cost which can be controlled or effected by a business, is LABOR. If you increase labor cost by 66%, how do you expect service industry, retail, and small businesses to absorb that cost? Simple, first they will raise prices as much as possible and second they will lay people off and expect the remaining employees to pick up the slack. All of the problems you are see are directly tied to YOUR LOCAL GOVERNMENT and over-regulation.
