*WHY?* The art, the music, the characters, the emotional journey, sharing with others, learning something: cultures, history, mythology, the power trips, the new friends, hand-eye cordination, the novelty, the myriad genres... I could go on. But I suspect *I* play games because my inner child wants to be moved again in a way that I have not experienced since mid-teens when I had my soul spun into a thousand colors by FFVII/IX/X, never to be the same again. Literally.

On the subject of number 2, I've heard stories of school trips in places like Rome, Florence, Paris etc. and the group ends up getting lost trying to get to find this landmark. Suddenly one of the kids recognises where they are and says they can probably find their way. 20 minutes later, they arrive. The teacher is amazed and asks how they knew the way, only to hear "I played Assassin's Creed". Lots of the Italian cities in the games have not changed in structure that much so you can actually find your way from St. Peter's Cathedral, to Castel Sant'Angelo to the Pantheon if you've played AC: Brotherhood enough.

@@deathbykonami5487 Simply because there are a lot of historical inaccuracies in the video games, that sometimes you'll confuse a fictional character for a video game character. Add to the fact that a video game always focuses a lot more on the story of the protagonist than the actual event. They aren't as detailied as they would be in a book. The discovery tour in Assassin's Creed origins and Odyssey is knowledgeable but the actual game... Not as much.

The 'he'll never get this' segment is both hilarious and pretty relatable, I've absolutely schooled family who've had this exact same expectations of me in the occasional general knowledge type games because of random stuff I've absorbed from various games lol. Granted, games aren't a replacement to learning, but it's a fun side-effect that happens by total accident (I'm not trying to learn here damn you! XD) that can be satisfying to flex on the unsuspecting snobby 'educated' family members you only see once in a while. The skills and knowledge you can pick up from just having fun with games can be fun to surprise people with.

My husband makes fun of me becuase I cant watch a single FF7 remake trailer without crying but I just get so excited I dont know what to do.with that pure excitement other than cry. It's like when I went to Distant Worlds for the first time and I sobbed during the performance of "Liberti Fatali" bc FF8 is my favorite game of all time and that song got me through my childhood. When they performed it live for the first time in 5yrs and I got to hear it I just couldnt help by cry. A few years ago when Square first announced FF7 Remake my husband was shocked bc the within the first 10 secs of the video I was crying from excitement bc I already knew what the video was showing before he could comprehend what it was. It's hard to explain to someone who doesn't get it. Final fantasy was MY game. The reason I fell I love with games, and fantasy, classical music, art. Those games made me ME. I played FF8 and 9 as a kid (around 7yrs) and from there it just formed me into who I am. I just dove into those worlds just like I did with books I read and I just love the characters and stories and ugh. I feel this on such an extreme level and I'm 24 now haha.

With Shadow of the Colossus, Journey, The Last Guardian, What Remains of Edith Finch, Hellblade, and recently Death Stranding and Gris, I think my number one reason for playing games is no longer "to have fun" like it used to be. My number one reason is because I want to have an experience. Fun - whether it's through gameplay or dialogue or aesthetics - is still important though but the games I'll remember the most from the PS4 are the ones which fulfilled me emotionally, from deep sadness to joy to pure frisson. Games can be truly life-affirming and I want more of that in the future.

Thanks to PlayStation I have people I consider good friends in Germany and Ireland and I've never been outside the US. Idk if I'll ever get to meet them in person, but we are friends on Facebook and that's pretty personal and special to me.🙂

I had one of those experiences in college when a professor mentioned a Whelk during a biology class, and absolutely no one knew what it was. However, thanks to many a Final Fantasy (looking at you in particular Lightning Whelk) I was able to dazzle with such weird knowledge.

Rob, thank you so much for making this. As a 58-yr old gamer who first got hooked on videogames after encountering a Space Invaders machine in a pub in 1980 I'm constantly having to explain this to family and friends who just don't understand. Tbh when I meet new people now I don't even mention it when they ask what I like to do for fear of ridicule like your 'family' in Trivial Pursuit. I've got a friend who loves Walking Dead and Alien but she will not even entertain the idea of playing Alien Isolation or the Telltale WD game along with me.... because it's a videogame. She won't even watch movies based on videogames. Thank you for giving me ammunition when I go to my other friends' annual Christmas party and someone will inevitably ask in a loud voice "so, Mike, (snigger) what videogames have you played this year?(snigger, nudge)".

Yeah I really agree with reason #1. However instead of "escapism" I think of it as "immersion" Having a video game console is like have a season pass for ALL of the theme parks in the world. 😁 At any time I can visit Gotham City, Los Santos, Yarhnam, Lothric Castle, The Mishma Estate, Shadaloo HQ, Astera, etc. "I don't play games because I don't have a life, I play games to have many lives"

What I love is that video games run on a second person narrative, which is something that cannot be achieved with films (and only achieved in books as a choose-your-own-adventure). You conveyed that well, Rob!

For number 2 I have another thing worth mentioning... A huge part of me learning English can be attributed to video games. When I was younger I had to learn some essentials, because translation was not always available. And now constantly hearing and reading in English gives me practice.

I can relate to number 6 on this list. Me and a couple of my gaming mates have been friends with a guy in Singapore for a good 7 years or so and a couple of months ago, he surprised me with an unannounced visit to the UK! It was an amazing feeling to meet this guy face to face after so many years of gaming together and I have games to thank for that. Or in this case, it was Final Fantasy that introduced us to each other. Thank you Final Fantasy!
