I think Johnnyboy has been my pilot before. It explains the "We've reached our flight altitude of 32,000 feet and we're turning off the seat belt light. Also if you're on the left side of the aircraft and look out at the mountain ridge at 10 o'clock, there's a nice 4 point buck enjoying a meal."

Gentlemen, the brake issue might even get worse as you go further inboard as the tracks are probably going to walk off at some time and meet the caliper assembly just when ya least need that to happen. My suggestion is to go to a brake shoe assembly on the inside of your drum that is part of the inset assembly making it impossible for something to grab your calipers. I do believe that you have changed brake pads on a rear axle where the hydraulic part for driving was a pad under a caliper and the emergency brake was on a cable on the inside part of the rotor. That said, whether its cable or hydraulic ... I honestly do believe it can also be used hydraulically just as well for the what was cable on a say pickup truck. I like hydraulic better than cable as they don't stretch like a cable would/will over time of use. And if your a real fab kind of guy, you might just go with a brake band on the outside of the drum as long as it doesn't have a caliper on the outside to get hooked on

I know your pain, Tom. I had a '89 Dodge Dakota V6, that quit on me one day. My brother towed me home and I checked my trouble codes against my Haynes manual and it told me I wasn't getting signal from the distributor. I popped the cap off and found the pick-up, on the Hall Effect Device had snapped off. I had a friend take me to the parts store and got a new one. Installed it and it still wouldn't start. I popped the cap off again and my new HED was shattered into tiny pieces. I sucked out the debris, with my shop vac, still trying to find out why, and I saw it. The interruptor crown in the bottom of the distributor, is held in place on the shaft, by a roll pin. Over the 20 years that I had owned this truck, that roll pin had slowly worked it's why out, far enough that it had eaten it's way through the pick-up on the HED, causing it to finally snap. I didn't notice it, when I put the new HED in and it hit all at once, destroying the HED. I went to the parts store, for another and the man asked me what happened, I told him and he gave me my money back. Told him it was operator error, he didn't care. I had to go down the street to another parts store, as the first one was out. Got my part, took a pair of channel locks and pushed the roll pin back in place, all was good. Fired right up.

Speaking from an engineering and fabricator (I've been both) perspective, it would have been better to attach the reinforcement plate to the UNDERSIDE of the tabletop. Then, when the vice is removed for clear workspace, the workspace would be clear, not obstructed by the plate.
@markwarner8336

Yes,you could have just welded nuts under the table, or if the table material is thick enough just drill and tap the holes
@davidclemens1578
@davidclemens1578 10 ай бұрын
I thought of the same thing at first. But I think Tom was talking about the vice being portable and not needing the benchtop space. Plus it would have sucked trying to weld the plate underneath the table. And as hard as they are on their tools, the reinforcement, was probably necessary.

In the late 60s when I was in the Navy, I had a Corvair Corsa that I would drive back-and-forth between South Florida and Norfolk, Virginia. Ralph Nader used to badmouth these cars because of their stability. I put in a heavier, duty sway bar and wider wheels and tires on the rear end. This was back before 95 was completed and I was driving on back country roads with a lot of curves. Let me tell you that thing cornered like it was on the rails. It was a good car except for the oil leaks.

In the entertainment industry, Tom's list of shop tasks would be called "Golden Children". They aren't mandatory tasks for day to day operation, they are helpful busy work when the shop is slow. In the slow season (Christmas/Midsummer) you take on a task to build, reorganize or clean something. That makes you a "Golden Child" of the shop and less likely to get laid off in the slow times.

Lots going on at Moor and the Florida vacation meeting up with the Fab Rats family and riding the swamp buggy was awesome! Jaymie enjoyed her shopping in Florida and they visited St Augustine which is a short distance from us here in Orange Park Florida. Matt and family got to go swimming in the Gulf {I think} and they enjoyed some awesome seafood. Tom continued working on the Bombi moving it forward so all is well.

If all the axles are solid and also attached to each other by supports then it might be a good idea to tie the engine mounts to them since they are going to be a lot stronger than the rest of the original Bombi (or is it Bombee now?) that looks to be one gauge thicker than sheet metal and was designed for a riding lawn mower engine and now it has an LS with maybe 40+ times the horsepower. If not the windows might pop out the first time Matt goose's it. I don't know anything about Bombi's but with no suspension it might be like having 80 lbs of air in your tires and trying to get thru the beach sand on a 115 degree day pulling a toy hauler. Less of the track on the ground is what I mean by that. This build, suspension wise, is the complete opposite of what Matt usually does with all the others. Instead of much much more travel this one has none. It is tracks instead of tires on the ground so we will have to wait and see what happens. Unless there is a long distraction I think the Bombi will be ready to go before the first snow. Didn't Tyson used to say "Looks like a butterfly and stings like a bee"? That's been popping up in my mind this whole post. I get songs stuck in there too sometimes. Meanwhile in FL I don't remember whose swamp buggy that Paul uses while there but I know the three times I've seen it he had to repair it before they could enjoy it. Matt must have demoed Paul since he wasn't on the podium. Maybe find out what happened in Paul's video.

As a former O'Reillys employee- I waranteed tons of crank and cam position sensors. I think the ones they sell are kinda crappy. The borg warner (if they still stock those) are better than master pro. But the lesson ive learned is the after market is not as reliable (but is cheaper) than oem parts. Buy jeep parts for you jeep if you have the money.

I've a bad feeling about those black spacers... They don't seem thick enough to avoid "wrapping" around the axle case if you brake seriously... Just look at the difference of thickness between the one piece disks and those things... And the more you move the disks inboard, the more the forces to "wrap" those spacers are higher...

Yeah the physics involved with that can be a little confusing. As long as the calipers are mounted good and solid there shouldn’t be any problems at all. Just think of it as a large hollow driveshaft.

They aren’t serious enough fabricators for those kind of tools. They are definitely sweet tools, but that vice is a monster and while Tom might do some fixturing, Matt definitely won’t. A smaller table with common fixtures might suit them better.

Tom, don't forget that when you move the brake inboard, you're removing the thickness of the old disc's hat from your sprocket placement, moving it inboard by that thickness. Might want to measure that up and make sure the sprocket isn't too far out of alignment.

The Ram Quad Cab rear seats may fit great in the back of the bombi. The mounts have a little rise and it folds so you may still have drive train access or cargo room.

@ 8:53 Where Matt tells of his Shopping Habits [ or little game(s) ] w/ Jenny, it reminds me of when I was College age ( about 20 ) and me and my " room mates " would go Shopping ( That was 1973 ). And One room mate would Ask, " Do you Like It " ? ! " Throw it in " ! While the Other room mate ( a rather Studious Fellow ) would pick up a package Off the Shelf and " Start Reading the Ingredients " And Say; " Oh This is Very Nutritious. " [ He was a REAL DRAG ], so we avoided taking him along. Lastly, " @ that time " a Dollar Went A Lot further " / $ 60.00 " would Fill " a Deep Basket Shopping Cart " and have a Mount on top of it !
