My standard is the best dog I’ve ever owned. She only barks when something is wrong, she watches the kids. Benefits of having a big dog without knocking over my toddler and fun enough to play with my 8 year old. Super active when we are ready, knows when she is supposed to chill. The most emotionally intuitive dog I’ve ever owned. They are tender hearted meaning you don’t need to yell or get frustrated with them-it will effect them greatly. Build confidence as a puppy and you’ll be fine. They spook easily but recover quickly if you have properly socialized your dog🤍

I’ve had quite a few large breed dogs. Doberman, German, Shepherd, malamute, and several Drahthaars (German wire hair pointers) None of those dogs were as smart as my standard poodle. He was five months old when I got him and had had some socialization with kids and other dogs but basically no training. The day I got him I told him to stay out of the kitchen twice and that’s all it took. Very seldom does he bark. And this is shocking: he seems to have natural watchdog and guard dog instincts. He is not hyper at all. We have a 5 acre orchard grass pasture, and he makes good use of his time out there. Other than a greyhound I had for a short while he is by far the fastest dog I’ve ever had. He loves his toys and hasn’t damaged anything. My wife is crazy about him which is awesome. The hypoallergenic and non-shedding qualities are also awesome. Not bragging about this dog is very difficult. He’s very gentle and loving. We are crazy about this dog 😂

As a breeder of standards who genuinly wants puppies in forever homes I find this video very on point in regards to a.poodles needs. They want to be a family member and interact, they wont cope being a dog who is only there for the occasional interaction. They are super fast learners and can be trained to fit a family dynamic easily but they also have self respect and do actually expect to be part of the family not a side addition.

@@aubreyfaulkner1271 I don't know about the OP's poodle, but our four are perfectly content to lounge around and nap. They're not bouncing around all the time, but taking them outside is like flipping a switch. We live rurally, so giving them a time every day or so to run free off leash and cable makes them very happy! They are smart and playful, and it's a joy to see them play and run together. However, my one note of caution is that if you work all the time I don't know if they're the best fit. There's almost always someone home with ours. They behave extremely well when we're gone, but when we get back home even if it's only been an hour they act like it's been, like, a week LOL! Also, the grooming costs are REAL! We do some minor upkeep ourselves, but for the cut and wash take them to the groomer. With our 4, it's about $400, I think including tip.

I love my standard poodle! These 7 reasons honestly were things I was concerned about before taking a leap of faith. I'm glad I did because Blu completes our family. I have a toddler and the two are partners in crime at the house. Blu hardly barks except when he sees certain people walking near our house. Just the other day I had the front window open. The neighbor's dogs were in the front barking at my son and Blu. My son usually yells loudly at barking dogs and Blu was right beside him barking at them. At least for my standard poodle, he's a good workout partner. He's the reason I started going out for walks. Over time I learned how to groom my poodle. It is time-consuming and I used to pay for him to be groomed when I was working on my master's. I think it worked out for us because my husband and I work from home and the kids keep Blu busy.

I've always had dogs. By far the best, calmest dog I've ever had was a standard poodle. (Her poodle mother was great, too.) Any smart owner can train a dog not to bark needlessly. The only legit "disadvantage" of a poodle is they need grooming BUT they also don't shed. They're hypoallergenic. The trade off is grooming but it's worth it to me.

Agree with the video, we spend £60 every 6 weeks on grooming. We walk her for around 1hour -1:30 hours a day. She goes to daycare on Friday and her morning walks we have a group so she can see her friends. The separation anxiety and noise can be helps with training but also with choosing the right breeder, ours mothers was rever calm and relaxed at home if she'd been walked and it was a trait she passed down. I would highly recommend poodles for people but remember you get out what you put in.

I had two Golden Doodles. Got them before I realized how over breed and over priced they were going to get. Sadly my one Golden doodle died before he reached the age of two. (Lymphoma) We liked the Poodle part of them so much that we adopted a Standard Poodle. She is beyond smart, and I've had smart dogs before. Yes, they need lots of fun play time and to be mentally challenged daily. I don't think I've ever had a dog that is more affectionate, she has to be close or touching all the time. The grooming is a challenge. My girl got nicked on the front leg at the groomers and now goes crazy if someone touches that one leg. They really are so smart and need to be trained. The barking on a Standard isn't much different from any other dog.

The only one I kinda disagree with is the barking. I don't think Standards (spoos) bark any more than most dogs; in fact, left to their own devices, my spoos are very quiet. The smaller poodles tend to be the barkers in my experience (my miniature is an excellent watch dog, but not yappy). My spoos usually only bark if another dog barks first like on a walk or the dog park, and even then, it's a couple 'hey friend!!' woofs. I think grooming is the one people don't fully appreciate until they get a poodle. It's GOT to be done, and it's either time consuming or expensive, depending on your values (save money vs save time). Luckily, spoos are highly trainable and want nothing more than to please you. If you are consistent with them early and buy quality tools, they aren't that hard to groom yourself. I started home haircuts during the pandemic. In the beginning, we had some embarrassing 'who did it and what for' haircuts, but I'm quite good now. The biggest mistakes people make are buying cheap clippers and going too long between brushing/clipping. Spoos are worth it though. I've never had such a well trained and behaved dog with minimal effort. My 8 week puppies were potty trained in a few days and taught themselves to use the doggy door. They are funny clowns that love to please and make you laugh. Now that I've had poodles, I'll never have another breed. #spoolove #poodlenotdoodle #floofcrew #triplethreat 🐩 🐩 🐩

I've had std Poodles for 40 years, and with every breed there is a range. Some poodles are very active, some are not. Some poodles enjoy people/family companionship, some prefer another dog. As for barking, the trainability factor is more important. If the owner spends time responding appropriately to the barking (letting the dog know what's OK to bark at and what's not - they look to the owner for direction) then they quit barking at everything. I've had/have some very quiet poodles. Bottom line for poodles: 1. How much time do you have to research perspective poodles? Ask for what you want in your poodle? Decide what you want out of your poodle? 2. How willing are you to train and challenge your poodle's mind? Play games, hike, acknowledge stranger alerts and tell poodle "that's ok, stop barking." Engage with your poodle. 3. Grooming is required. Weekly brushing and nail trims, 6 week bathing and hair trims, and knowing what hair pattern works for your lifestyle. My current dog loves swimming so she is clipped shorter. Confirmation clips are much more involved/costly, requiring more commitment and $$$. Poodles are extremely smart, loyal, devoted companions that are versatile. Agility, obedience, therapy, confirmation, hunting, nose work like search & rescue, tricks, and are usually attracted to children in a loving and protective manner. There are excellent points in this video and can be true for particular poodles. Also can be proven incorrect by other poodles. Research perspective poodles well and find an honest, trustworthy breeder or spend time around the poodle before adoption.

The only dogs my family has ever had have been standard poodles. The two first poodles were girls but we adopted them after they couldn’t have puppies anymore. Our first standard poodle was an angel who would listen to us and follow instructions very well. When we ate she stayed under the dinner table and whenever my 5-6 year old sister and brother would dress her up she would just sit there and let them give her a makeover, although she was very close with my mom. The only problem was she LOVED butter. With our second poodle, we got her maybe a year or two before we moved to norway (we lived in the usa before) and she was a very sweet dog, who loved to walk to the beach despite not liking water, she acted sort of like she was the queen of the house and she was very polite. The only time I ever remember her barking/growling was when we saw another dog while we were on a walk, the reason she barked/growled at the dog was because she was trying to protect me, the other dog growled at me and sort of tried to run towards me though it’s owner stopped it. Keep in mind, the dog who barked at me was a lot bigger than my dog but she stood her ground because she was worried about me. She didn’t have any obsessions with butter but she liked bread. She was too polite to take it off the table like Sasha, our first dog though. The dog we have right now is our first male dog and we’ve had him since he was three months old. He’s a lot wilder but we figure that the reason behind that is that he’s a puppy. He’s very sweet, outgoing but shy at the same time and when a bigger dog gets a little too aggressive, he runs to hide behind my legs. He has thicker hair than either of our first dogs had but I think that’s mainly because he was born in Norway and has Norwegian genes so his fur has to be thicker to keep him warm. He’s a lot louder than Sasha or daisy whenever someone walks past the window though. He’s very playful but sleeps most of the day. Overall if you’re thinking of getting a standard poodle I would say go for it if you’ve taken its needs into consideration. They’re very good with kids and even though I’ve never had a toy poodle, I’ve heard they’re not as patient with young kids.

30min to an hour of activity a day? That's bare minimum... Also, in terms of barking, a bored poodle will bark but if you walk them a few times a day and play with them, they are usually pretty content.

30-60 minutes a day, you must be joking, ours gets restless if she does not get 2-3 hours a day, plus ball games in the garden. having said that unless it's raining, she does not want to go out when it's raining. Otherwise spot on, great video. She can be hard work as she constantly wants to be busy, and we have never got her out of the habit of trying to chase squirrels and cats. She caught one once but only licked it, she is so gently, never damaged a toy ever. Her party trick is waking round shops, town centres off lead, and crossing roads on the crossings.

For anyone wondering, I work 3-4 12 hour shifts a week and mine are the happiest in the world. But we live within 10 minutes of several trails so on the off days, and sometimes even before or after work, they get a lot of stimulation consistently. But they can tolerate 12 hour shifts just fine if you compensate for it! I’m single so maybe that helps. My off time is generally focused on them.

I haven’t ever really considered a poodle before because of the general look you see, but now that my super active Aussie is getting older, I’m considering the breed when it comes time to get another. I want a super smart dog who doesn’t shed as much as my Aussie does, but still likes to go on runs with me.

I was under the misconception that poodles were an over-domesticed, slightly degenerated dog breed. My first real encounter with a poddle was at my brother's who got himself one. Before I met the dog my brother had to suffer a lot of piss-taking from me for getting himself a poddle, but boy, did I change my opinion. That dog had next-level intelligence. It was not even dog-like. It was eerie.

On our 3rd. He is almost 5 months. Hell on wheels 😮. 2nd is 8 y.o. She is amazing. Loving but has major separation anxiety from me. Will wait at the door for hours whining. The pup will sit with her to keep her company. I groom(ed) all 3. No way I'm gonna fork out 100 bucks a cut. Stranger's who own poodles ask me who the groomer is lol. So I can't be that bad. 1st male was horrible on leash. Stubborn like you wouldn't believe. 2nd, she is incredible. No real training. Off leash might as well be on leash. Follows hand signals chasing rabbits and never trained her! Pup is hell on wheels 😂😂 All smart. 1st male amazingly smart. 2nd is only poodle smart but HATES learning tricks. Pup just might be smarter than both. Twisting cap off bottle at 11 weeks old after watching my daughter show him how to do it. ONCE! But did I mention he's hell on wheels??😮 Wild child and fearless. He'll be interesting to see grow these next couple of years. Oh and I'm a poodle snob lol. Love the breed. Owned a few other types but poodles are special.

This was a GREAT comment. Hell on wheels - but you obviously love your little homie. 😍 I'll bet he's not hell on wheels - he's just too smart for his own good. But, I'll also bet you LOVE that about him. A real poodle snob wants a super intelligent pup knowing that they're going to have their hands full, but wouldn't have it any other way! I'll bet that's you. 😉

My girl is great - very important point it the grooming -it’s a life choice -I groom myself and it’s a big commitment. She’s up for any activity and is fun all the time . She’s shy with people which is a shame but at 4 years old she’s improving all the time . Wouldn’t be without her . Must points go for all dogs though

I have a poodle and he is such an amazing dog. Grooming only takes up to an hour and the barking is only when they are alerting you or when they are scared. They are a great family dog and companion. And yes they do need exercise but that is with all dogs. And again yes they are very smart and stubborn but if you are lazy then your dog is gonna have a miserable life.

Smart hardly describes Baby Caleb, our standard. We live on 12 acres and fencing the property is not practical. Its convenient to to let him out with out one of the adults. So we bought a GPS collar. We had used a electronic collar for early training and he was use to tones and vibration. He wore the GPS collar to good effect. After a month or so we discovered Caleb had memorized the virtual fence He no longer requires the collar !

Lols, my standard hardly barks. When working with the show poodles, they are the quietest ones at the show. My girl only barks in playing or when someone comes to the gate, and when I say enough, she stops right away. Because they are so smart you can easily train them not to bark except when you allow it. These are the 2 reasons I allow it. Play and let me know someone is here with only up to 2 or 3 barks but then stop when I say so. Most of the reasons "not" to get a poodle is why I got one lols. My girl is my service dog and we compete in rally. At home in the house she is a cuddle bug or she is laying on the floor somewhere very chill.

I have two standards. One is from a hunting stock, is quiet and only barks with purpose, is very active. The other is from a pet breeder and is a couch potato, is quiet, and barks like any other dog would at a sound or stranger. All dogs deal with separation anxiety, but poodles are not known to be worse than other breeds. Are poodles aloof? Yes! They are NOT everyone’s friend and strangers do not interest them. My poodles do not like strangers touching them and will duck their head to avoid someone’s hand.

My poodle is very smart but a bit pushy with kids. He needs a playmate, but we don’t have the right situation for another poodle right now. Plus he is only 1.5 years, and still a puppy. One thing the video didn’t talk about is food. My guy eats, but is very casual about it. He loves his treats, but again he only really gets excited if it’s something new or he hasn’t had it for a while. Even high value treats will not compete with a good romp. He prefers play to treats most of the time, even meat or cheese!

I think the title should be renamed as ‘Why you should never get a poodle with docked tail’ . The standard poodle is a normal size of a dog of that pedigree. But the reason why smaller dogs are favored is because of long life, small in space that large dogs tend to take over, and also care as well. I like smaller poodles because I live in such a small space and smaller dogs are not as aggressive as one might suggest. Small poodles are just as loving as their large size counterparts. Also I like to cuddle due to their gentle nature and if they are treated with well deserved love and affection, they could be just as loving as a lovely labradoodle named Teddy!! (I love you, Smokey!!❤)
