Another great and inspiring video Naja! I struggle with getting my clothes to " fit" in my small closet and I tend to struggle eliminating items....however I am determined to follow your kind advice and downsize completely only leaving the absolute best to use! Thank you for all you do!

I remember when I bought THE coat, it was a bit expensive but sooo beautiful! It arrived and fit me like a glove. I didn't have to look for another, better coat, as the one I had/have was just perfect, and I'll wear it until it falls apart. That's what I want for all pieces in my wardrobe

Some of the classic pieces my mom bought at my age don’t work for her anymore and it’s so fun to get them. I’ve gotten classic 90s jeans, a chic leather jacket, and some accessories as well. I’ve also found the transition to quality over quantity so refreshing.

Reminding yourself of what you already have is such a good idé! This is why I keep folders on my phone where I see all the items I own (I divided my clothes into every day, work, and fancy categories). This is so helpful if I see something I like! Often I find I already have something identical. And if I decide I like the new, but similar, item more I do a hard think as to why and decide if I should replace the item.

This video was posted 7 months ago, but the “prioritize how you feel in an item” made me finally make a simple spreadsheet to keep track this. I have 106 items in my wardrobe right now. I don’t want to get rid of just for the sake of getting rid of it. I need to see what I’m drawn to and what I’m not. Thank you for the tips.

I really agree with the sixth rule. That is something I'm trying to stop doing this year and actually buying clothes that I feel good in not just because the cloth looks nice or because it's popular.

Adding to color schemes- getting a professional color analysis is the best money I have ever spent. I know exactly what colors make me look and feel incredible. It has really taken the guesswork out from getting dressed and decluttering. And it paid itself off very quickly by helping me make better purchases.

This is exactly the minimalist video I needed to see. I have known my color palette for years, but style wise I have been all over the place. Your explanation of "You have a blue sweater. Do you really need another?" hit me! Keep up the good work!

I love the "how do you feel in this item ?" question, because I feel it covers several aspects : does it feel "me" ? Does it feel comfortable ? Does it feel appropriate ? I sometimes disagree with the proof of concept idea though, recently I really wanted a blaser but the only one I had had (and worn, and loved) was very different to what I was attracted to. I decided to buy a not-too-expensive version of the blaser I wanted in order to test the idea but I couldn't just rely on a proof of concept. Now that I have it I might invest more though 😇
@NajaSierra3 жыл бұрын
Yes I agree, it can be interpreted to mean exactly what it needs to at the moment 🙌🏼
@NajaSierra3 жыл бұрын
I wanted to add something about your point to the proof of concept. I agree! I think you're absolutely right. It's not a rule you can apply to everything, and even if you could I always stand by that there are exceptions to the rules as well - I still think a proof of concept makes great sense for having a smaller wardrobe - even if you can't and shouldn't apply it every time you shop. Of course, if we can never experiment with new styles, we would never evolve. I recently got into slip dresses and would have never done so was I exclusively buying things I already wore. BUT if you want to keep a small wardrobe, going with what you already reach for is a good strategy for the majority of the time! Thanks for watching and sharing your opinion, I always really appreciate these thoughtful comments xx
@lifeontheledgerlines83942 жыл бұрын
I'd argue that buying a cheaper version of an item you want IS searching for a proof of concept. You want to build up the knowledge that you would use a more expensive version of that item, therefore, you're trialing it with something that's lower-risk because it costs less.

Thanks for the helpful tips. I would also ad that it's important to understand what flatters our individual body type and stick with it. That can be tough when trends change and all of a sudden we are told everything that works for us is out of fashion. I would rather be a bit out of fashion than out of proportion, and really where I live it's not like many women are following the latest cutting edge trends, anyway. It just sort of feels like being judged by random anonymous strangers on the internet. I tell myself it's not good for the environment to suddenly switch horses in mid stream and ditch everything I invested in my wardrobe for new trends.

The fantasy self concept really hit me and explained a lot. There used to be a lot of fantasy self items in my wardrobe and of course seperate ones, almost never worn. I stopped buying them but I still feel the urge to buy when I see one. Now I know why. Thank you, really. Now I can minimize the items of that kind, really use them and feel happy 😊
@ashleywagner86503 жыл бұрын
I really like your point about focusing on how something makes you feel vs whether it’s a nice item. I think that’s where I get stuck a lot of the time, and I think it’ll help me a lot to shift that focus!

Congratulations on 10K subscriptions, Naja, and I love the new bangs. Jeans are an item that don't work for me. I know they are consdiered a staple in most people's wardrobes, but whenever I wear jeans, no matter how well they fit, I don't feel good in them. I keep only one pair in case I need them to do outdoor activities, such as hiking, but they don't form a part of my daily lifestyle.

Yeah I am a stay at home mom now for good... quit last week, so no longer need all of my business attire. My “ fantasy self” was to be a working corporate mom but that’s not how it turned out...and that’s ok. My style now is super casual and I wear cardigans , not blazers
@malihagarden70623 жыл бұрын
Michelle, even if you are a full time stay at home person now, you can still wear blazers as part of a casual outfit in fall when you go out. Jeans or any casual pant with a tee shirt looks very nice with a blazer. So don’t ditch all your business attire yet. 😊

You had some great tips. I think that I tend to keep things because they are nice even though I do not feel good wearing them. I plan on doing a wardrobe declutter soon and am tucking that concept into the back of my mind to use when I go though things. I like the color scheme idea as well and have been moving toward having one as well.

Great Video, thank you so much! I have to say I disagree with decluttering the fantasyself. I would like to see more people dress like there fantasy and go to the office or for a hike or grocery shopping.I think minimalism is a great tool to live an authentic life. And if you have a goth person living inside you, don´t supress it. Let the freaks lose, let it all hang out or you might end up replacing a fashionmagazine with a minimalist youtube channel to tell you how to dress. By the way what is extreme for some is completly normal for others. I think what I try to say is that it is more fun to declutter the fear of judgement from others then your fanatsy.

My fantasy self wears edgy, girly, sexy, fancy items, my reality self is always in my bike, busy with the kids and in the office and mature. I choose to have a few items to live my fantasy self with a cool, Grafik wide leg pants, a pleated skirt, a t-shirt with studs, which I love to wear every now and then ; I donated the fantasy self items which really don't fit for me like a tailored slip dress with cutouts, several extremely wide leg pants, a long leather coat. So I find the perfect way for me to say goodbye to a part of my fantasy self and say hello to other parts of it😊🤗

I think the super-bright, intense colors being pushed by brands this autumn are going to throw a lot of women’s wardrobes out of whack, if they buy too many. Personally, I’m not buying them because they don’t suit my coloring or light, muted wardrobe palette. Could you explain what Proof of Concept means? Thanks, it’s new to me.

I also don’t know what is the proof of concept. I’d love to know that.
@lifeontheledgerlines83942 жыл бұрын
Proof of concept means that it's something you've tried, tested, and seen that it works for you. This could be something like trying out a denim skirt because you know you love jeans, buying a higher-quality pair of jeans because you know you really love jeans, or if you've never worn jeans before, buying a cheaper pair to see if/how often you will wear them.

I would be so depressed if I only wore things that “suit my lifestyle”. Loungewear, I suppose, no thanks. I’ve also resigned myself, at age 61, to the fact that nothing is going to fit both my larger bust and my narrow shoulders. Changing the shoulders is one of the most expensive alterations, often exceeding the cost of even a high-quality silk blouse or dress, or doubling the cost of a blazer. There is also a limit as to how much the shoulders can be narrowed, about one inch at each shoulder, at the most. The more Asian design and manufacturing dominates the market, the worse this gets, nothing has bust darts as they are designed for A cups. So, I’m a medium stuck in extra-large everything. I’m only an E cup (about the median?), I can’t imagine how really busty women manage. Yes, there are knits, but that straining across the bust is uncomfortable and looks terrible, like we’re bursting out all over the place, or just fat.
@emmy85263 жыл бұрын
For pullover sweaters, diagonal 'shoulder' seams (like the standard design on good sweatshirts) might alleviate this effect. Something to look for in future knitwear maybe.
@malihagarden70623 жыл бұрын
Kimberly, you’ve pointed out the problems of ready to wear garments so well! I’m 59, and petit with large bust. I face similar problems as you. So true, that clothes nowadays do not have bust darts. I now rely a lot on knits, but as you pointed out, they also tend to stretch too much at the bust line making an ugly appearance!
