As-Salamu 'Alaykum would have been a common greeting in Sicily a thousand years ago. Why? Because from 827 to 1061, Sicily was under Arab rule. It was a period of enlightenment, whose cultural, social, and economic reforms had a profound and long-lasting influence still felt today.
After the birth of Islam in the 7th century CE, the Arabic world soon rose to a position of dominance in many fields, such as medicine, mathematics, farming, and cartography. Their military might was no less significant, and it was only a matter of time before Sicily, the crossroads of the Mediterranean, fell into Arab hands.
Ziyadat Allah seized control of Mazara del Vallo, and the invasion continued towards Palermo. Bal’harm, as they renamed the town, was to become the capital city. Over the next fifty years, most major towns fell to the Arabs, the last being Syracuse in 878.
In the field of agriculture, the Arabs divided up the larger estates and diversified production. While continuing to exploit Sicily’s potential as a wheat producer, they introduced a whole variety of crops, including citrus fruits. Sugar cane and hemp were also cultivated in considerable quantities, nurtured by highly effective irrigation systems. And if all that weren’t enough, Sicilian Arabs were the first to mass-produce dried pasta - an undertaking of huge importance for the world as a whole.

Italians and the arab/muslim world have shared a lot in past. While in some times of history we had to defend ourselves from the Ottoman expansion, we understand what they wanted to do. That was the restauration of the old Roman empire. It was a noble purpose. But apart from that, relationships between us and the arabs and muslims in general was always quite deep and friendly. We traded a lot, we had a lot of shared history, both our cultures was respected until the religious fanatics from northern europe imposed an hard regime here in Italy. Many italians remained in the Ottoman empire becoming citizens, many even converted themselves to islam. Even today, despite the rough relationships we had during ww2, theres a mutual respect between Italians and Arabs/Muslims. Just after the war, many italians continued to support the cause of Palestinians that saw their land stripped away from them by Israel. One of our common martyr is Vittorio Arrigoni, that gave his life for Palestina. We have a lot in common. We italians love the muslim world. 🇮🇹😉👍

The Ottoman is the Turkish empire. It takes its roots from Central Asia, Iran and Eastern Rome. They used a lot of Arabic words because of religion, but other than that, this empire had nothing to do with Arabs.

Well Italians also stayed for a while in the Middle East ... Baalbeck is a great Example . I am from Lebanon and when I went to the South Italy I flet at home . We have the same relation to food , to family , the look of the people .

Veramente molto interessante! bravissimo Patrick. Qualche anno fa lessi un libro interessantisismo: "La Sicilia araba" che descriveva una cultura dinamica e moderna durante la dominazione araba dell'isola che ha lasciato tantissimo nell'architettura ma anche nelle storie. Il personaggio della tradizione siculo-araba per definizione è Giufà, ragazzo del popolo un po' sciocco e un po' furbo. Potresti fare un paragone con tantissime figure simili della tradizione narrativa araba (?). Bellissimo video, molto istruttivo

Ci sono delle piccole imperfezioni, ad esempio, in italiano pronunciamo le sillabe in maniera diversa rispetto all'arabo (è una cosa che sicuramente sai già) e potresti cercare di pronunciare -tr-, -dr-, -fr-, -cr-, -chi(V)-, -pr-, -pi(V)- in un'unica sillaba, perché magari, posso sorvolare sul tuo nome (anche se rischia di turbare e distrarre un ascoltatore che abbia pure inconsapevolmente una sensibilità fonetica), però etruschi pronunciato et-ruschi, Africa Af-rica, mac-roculure, dimentich-iamo, rip-iene ... è proprio strano e straniero. ;P Inoltre, -gn-, -gl-, -sc(i)- sarebbero sempre doppi (sempre sempre!! anche se sembra strano, pure a inizio di parola dopo pausa!), sicché Spagna è meglio pronunciarlo Spagngn-gna. ;) Novesimo, dicesimo -> Nono, decimo! però undicesimo è giusto! ;) Mi sono iscritto, un saluto, Giacomo

Very good video. One interesting fact - the Latin and Greek alphabets are descendants of the Phoenician alphabets. The Phoenicians were/are a Semitic people native to the coastal Levant. It's interesting to see how Semitic and Indo-European cultures interacted throughout history.

The term Africa predates the Arab invasion of North Africa by at least 1000 years. Scipio Africanus was given the title Africanus in 202 BC for conquering Africa. Don’t try to make it look as if Africa is an Arabic word or as if Arabs named it that lol. Wallahi Arabs can’t stop claiming people history and culture (and land)🤣

The early Sicilians came from NorthAfrica and India many many thousand years ago. Sicily is more arab than the rest of italy. Therefore we were threatened in other countries and speacial the north italy as "terrone". That means "soil eater" because the majority of sicilians have their own farm and have a strong bond of affection to the family, culture, traditions, Land of Sicily and Family.
