Thank you for tips. The answers are good, just a little bit long.... There is a doubt, that this information is a very useful for me. I am always stressed at the job interviews. That is why I work at my current workplace (Nursing Home) for 7 years. But I recently completed Master of Social Work and looking for a job. There are many obstacles on my way: age, non-English speaking background, stress at the interviews, no experience in the social work (apart of two placements of 1000 hours)....I am now applying for the jobs. I have been called for an interview. Not sure if I passed it or not...I did not expect to have a written and personality tests followed by the online interview... I think, my written and personality tests went Ok. But the online interview.... I was ready to answer the questions that you covered in this video but.... these questions were different..... There were only five situational questions at the interview (nothing like "why do you like to work for us,... what do you know about us, ...your strengths and weaknesses,.... what your friends will tell about you, etc....). The hardest question among five questions was " ...tell me about a challenging situation and a tough decision you took..." I did not know what to answer....I told something about an everyday life in the Nursing Home, that some people are cranky, can shut and scream, other people are quite and do not want to hear it but there is not another recreation room to divide them....They all have rights to be there, to get the same service and treatment. We (workers) are like between two fires.....But sometimes you have to take a decision and remove the one who is the most loud (and take him\her to the sister station) for sake of others. .. I am not sure if my "story" was understood at the interview by the panel. Because someone has to work in a Nursing Home to know their specifics. It would be good if you could make a video covering a job interview for graduates. And situational questions as well. Thank you in advance!

Imho, your response about the shouting client was excellent, especially if you had already failed to calm him using some decompression and distraction strategies (i.e., activities he enjoys, reading, etc). Also when you said you only had 1000 hour placements, you should be celebrating that not diminishing it. Referring to those as placements not as merely 'just 1000 hour placements' sets the right confident tone. Employers like to see positive and upbeat people for interview, even if these candidates have doubts inside (don't we all). Show your 'best self' when interviewing, since your experiences prove you deserve to be working in an environment you dream of.

I used motivational interviewing probing and asking questions to get him to realize how leaving the program could affect him and he realized it was not a cycle he wanted to repeat so he stayed in the program. Some good answers here but highlighting that you don't do the work for money is irrational in a job interview. This is a reason social worker salaries continue to remain lower. People literally keep sending the message that they will work for far less. Otherwise good.

Was anyone actually asked these questions though? I only got to the third or 4th one before it began becoming abundantly clear these weren't questions remotely relevant to social worker positions but rather just generic interview questions where you can switch out social worker for literally any other profession. For my interview questions I got asked my experience working with multidisciplinary teams, my clinical approach, if I had experience doing family work, how I'd approach a risk assessment and much more specific clinical skills related questions. And while we are at it let's stop perpetuating the "social workers are underpaid" trope and start demanding the pay the position deserves or being more transparent about how you could make money in social work just as easily as any other profession.

Are social workers allowed to befriend their clients? I know of a social worker who befriended three of her clients, they live at her house, they spend almost all their free time together, go on holidays together... In my country she could be fired for all of this.
