To be fair, things like phones and games aren't being released every year in order to incorporate the newest features and designs, it's just to make you buy it again on account of designed obsolescence. They don't want any of their features or designs to last more than a year, or they would make them that way.
@chrisfranklin75473 жыл бұрын
That’s half true. Anyone buying a new iPhone every year or every call of duty game is getting duped. But the cumulative updates over say 5 years are far from trivial. I think this video just highlights some of the ridiculousness of how the Star Wars EU developed. There are a handful of lines in the original trilogy and prequels that force writers to set their stories thousands of years earlier, but they still want to use the same elements of lightsabers, blasters, space battles and droids. So we end up with slightly ludicrous lore that says technology has basically stagnated for tens of thousands of years. A galaxy full of advanced interstellar civilisations and virtually no scientific advancements happening.
@techzone15522 жыл бұрын
@@chrisfranklin7547 I see your point, but at the same time, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. There's no reason why people in Star Wars need to develop highly-advanced starships if upgrading the hyperdrive and weapons systems makes a significant enough difference. And while it may make more sense for starships in Star Wars to be more advanced over time (which they are, as modern SW ships are way bigger and have way more weapons and advancements in sublight and hyperdrive tech), if you make something that might be scientifically or realistically accurate, then it would stop being Star Wars. Don't go to Star Wars looking for realism.

You could pretty much fill it up with Stargate ships. The 5000+ year old Goa'uld designs are considered _new_. The Asgard Belsinker is some ten millennia old, the Wraith ships are also around that age as well, the Atlantis-class cityship and the Aurora-class Ancient battleship classes are a couple of millions of years old (the Ori designs might be around that age as well, though it's questionable whether they maintained a standing fleet), then of course there's Destiny which was launched in the Eocene epoch not long after the non-avian dinosaurs died out.

For the real world equivalent, look no farther than the American B-52. Still flying combat missions 69 years after the first ones rolled off the line and projected to be flying for many more years. Of course, today's B-52 is a very different beast from those first ones, having nearly every system upgraded and replaced over the years. I would assume it's the same for these vessels. If it still works (or can be made to work) for the mission, there's no reason not to keep using it...

Star ship designs that remained relevant for thousands of years? This is what sets Star Wars apart from other sci-fi franchises like Star Trek. In Star Trek technology is a huge part of the story. If you have a problem, just insert a lot of technology and techno-babble until it's fixed. (I'm exaggerating a lot, but seriously how many problems have been solved by "reversing the polarity" of whatever gizmo?) But in Star Wars, the technology just helps to establish the setting. The stories of this new mythology could be set anywhere, any time or place, and still tell basically the same story and speak to an audience. There's a reason why it's been called a "modern day mythology".
