I am 60 years old retired as Government Engineer and recently i visited Australia and felt comfortable speaking to English people easily.English people understood nicely and surprised when I said l never gone out of India and this was my first trip English speaking world.i narate my habits.when I did diploma engineering my professor told to listen bbc and voice of America thru radio and you know those days getting a radio was very difficult but still I found one and listen to their broadcast in odd time.later after the technology I listen to Wollongong FM which is far way town from sydney because of internet.since technology available now,it is high time that we must learn English from native speakers and it is very much possible even for remote people.this is going to be future and you are going to see

Watching Tamil movies with English subtitle also helps. It enables to us relate the words.

With smart phones and social media, two other techniques I used in the process of learning (I learnt Hindi as an adult) 1) Listen to popular music of that language: Google the list of top artists in that language, pick a style, follow them. Listen to them while driving, at the gym and slowly learn the lyrics and sing along. You not just learn the language, but will be part of that culture. I listened to a bunch of bollywood songs. 2) Follow influencers in the topic you like: I followed environment, food and farming related influencers. Even if you don't understand every word, you will get the context and not get bored. Now if I meet a hindi speaking farmer, I can have a conversation with him. Basically, pick an area where you have knowledge and interest.

No sir.. actually English is tougher than Tamil...in English the are different phonetic sounds for same letters in different context..eg.. colonel and colonialism..both has some similar letters, but sounds completely different...like wise there are letters in some words , which should be silent.. eg.. Wednesday (d,e.. silent), doubt (b .. silent).. like that there are soo many....on the contrary , Tamil is a very very easy language..once if you learnt the basic (12+ 18) letters...you can fluently read any sentences...but in case of English, each and every word should be taught by someone to pronounce how it should.. because the letters are 26, but it has 44 phonetic sounds.. English is such a nonsense language I have ever seen...
