I am turning 18 tomorrow and I have decided to buy the Henry single shot in 308. It is not to expensive and here in Indiana I’m never shooting more than 200 yards. The single shot I also believe make me more accurate because I need to have a great shot.

just get a tikka t3x lite, swap to the limbsaver recoil pad, change the trigger spring and get a bradley adjustable cheek riser. get something that is drop tested and can take a fall like a nightforce, trijicon or swfa mrad scope with a bubble level and you are good to go.

At 7:50. I 100% agree and think people should really really listen to that point about sighting in your new rifle build or just new rifle before you get to the field. It’s happened to me once and plenty of times to people I know that while sighting in a new rifle or a rifle with new bottom metal or magazines, they shot single feeding rounds at the range just to find out on game day that they have feeding issues. Could be something simple as mag feed lips needing adjustment or something much bigger. Always shoot the way you plan to hunt. Great advice!

This video is spot on. Bought rifle check, scope and rings check, ammo check, and it’s all out together at the store….flop. There is so much more to do with your hunting rifle like making sure the scope is mounted properly for proper eye relief. That’s a whole video itself. Then there is length of pull correction for fit. Then there is the ammo that your rifle likes. Oh and btw, when you went out the shoot it the rifle gives you scope bight damage or kicks you so hard you say heck no I’m not hunting with this rifle. There’s lots to consider and fit to the hunter. Not to mention the range time for practice. If I knew back then what I know now I’d never buy a “mountain light” rifle. Lots to consider. My approach years down the road are much different than when I first got into hunting. I consider so much more than just buying a rifle off the shelf. Thanks for the awesome video! 😃👍🏻

In my Leuopold VX6, it has a fire dot reticle. One of the features is the level feature. If you are not holding your rifle level, it blinks at you. Really cool as your eye does not have to leave the sight picture to look at an exterior bubble level.

Still a great pump gun even though it is mostly plastic, kzbin.infoUgkxh4su9YgU1tWmjikirWcKJbjsFLEU62Bc but with care it will last a long time. It would be neat if Crosman would make a commemorative version of this with real wood stock, but of course it would weigh more and cost more, but hey, it would be cool. The included scope is more of a toy, but it does work for backyard plinking. I prefer to use pellets for greater accuracy, but BBs are just as good for plinking. This is not a Red Ryder folks; fully pumped it is 3 times the power of a Red Ryder and can be dangerous if not handled properly. Be safe out there.

When I got into shooting, I bought Athlon optics because they were less expensive. I have much better optical quality scopes that are lighter now. But the Athlon Talos BTR 1-4x24 is a great scope that I still use from time to time to this day. They’re a bit heavy, but durable. You can buy that scope today 01/24/2023 for $175. Nitrogen purged, illuminated, and true one power. That’s a great deal.

Awesome vid. I have seen people glow about zeroing a rifle with a sled and then "fine tune in the field." I cannot do that. I have to zero the rifle to my shoulder. I am not going to be hunting on public land which is very much like back country in some cases, with a table and a lead sled. It's going to be my shoulder. So, adjust to my shoulder and whatever rest. I hunt with a tripod but I can also use a tree branch or do the Jeff Cooper thing and brace my off hand against a tree trunk. The only way to ensure the same MV every time is to hand load and match all the slug weights to a fraction of an ounce and match the powder weights to a fraction of a fraction of an ounce. Outside of that, you are going to vary by as much as 20 fps. Live with it. By the time you go through a box of 20 that hopefully came from the same lot, you will not have that lot any more. So, I practice a lot. Which means I manage recoil so that I don't get a flinch. Pachmayr slip-on, muzzle brake, earphones. And I found a commercial made ammo that is giving me 1/2 MOA from my rifle. So, I have followed the good advice here. Pick a rifle with a scope that you can use that gets you sub MOA accuracy with a particular cartridge and practice. That way, on the stalk or in a stand, you don't have to think of any of that. Point and shoot.

Jim, Great vid on picking a primary back country rifle. I have a late model Winchester Model 70 in 300 Win Mag as my primary gun. Sig Sauer 4-16 scope, first focal plane in MOA, a good muzzle brake and a 2 1/2 lb trigger. I love it but I was thinking about a back up gun for next years elk hunt. I have a Winchester Model 54 in 35 Whelen with a Leupold 3-9 scope. I was thinking about changing the scope out to maybe a SWFA 4-16, FFP in MOA but my real challenge is max range. I have some reloaded 180 Barnes copper rounds that have been chronographed at 2980 fps and I would probably have no problem going to as much as 400 yards with this set up but my 300 Win Mag is a consistent 3-5 inch group at 500+ and where I hunt in AZ that could easily be the shot I have to take. I am thinking that if I could find a 35 cal. round with a boat tail to increase the BC maybe the old girl could be stretched out to 450-500 yards, but I can only find flat tailed bullets. Do you know of anyone that makes boat tail 35 slug, and is this a good plan? Thanks again and I love your KZbin videos!!!

I honestly think you need to do a significant amount of shooting with a rifle before it goes hunting. A fouled barrel with generally shoot better and a new barrel with gain velocity up until about 100-150 rounds. You won’t get accurate dope until you’ve got a good number of ammo through it. That barrel will actually gain a significant amount of velocity. It’s not just a little. 100fps is not uncommon

I have a question...when I site a Scoped Rifle does it make any difference to site at or near as possible the elevation you will be hunting in? My elevation where I would site a rifle(near my house) is around 2,000 feet, but where I hunt typically is around 6 to 8,000 feet. Should I site at the elevation where I will hunt or does it not matter?

Air density differs at altitude, so there will be less drop with lower density air. How much I'm not sure.

I have never heard of a store/shop offering to sight in a rifle. Bore sight yes. Hopefully they know the difference.

Right. That’s what I mean. I frequently hear people thinking that a “ bore sight” is like a magical scientific sighting in that is super accurate. Yikes.

I read somewhere you were reluctant to recommend Fierce rifles at the moment, is that still true?

A 1° cant at 500 yards is 1 inch when shooting 308. 1 degree of cant will only be a major factor at 1000 yards or so. Even a 5° cant will only cause 1" of error at 300 yards.
