“A good character is the only guarantee of everlasting, carefree happiness.” - Seneca
The Stoics believed in living a virtuous life, one with the potential to bring us personal happiness and fulfillment. And that’s one of the reasons a person may choose to live after their fashion. After all, what good is philosophy if it doesn’t ultimately bring us happiness? But in Stoic philosophy, it’s the pursuit of virtue and good character that allows us to get there. For the Stoic, the pursuit of virtue is the pursuit of happiness. If we can live virtuously, a good life will follow.

Dad & I have Long Covid. We’ve been sick for 26 months this past month has been particularly difficult I’ve only gotten more than four hours of sleep two nights in August 2022. I feel like I’m gonna die today and the feeling of death has become very normal very often 💫 good luck almost no one that will ever read this has any idea how blessed you are

I only got 3 hours of sleep every night for a year so I vaguely understand what horrors you're dealing with but I pray you & your dad will overcome this as I have. it's true most people have no idea how blessed they are to be without chronic illness & to be able to sleep at night. I'm going to pray a sincere prayer for you both.

I am mobility, hearing and memory challenged, and undergoing tests for stomach cancer and diabetes. I am also seeking new employment. I am on my own as my husband died 10 years ago. No children, no family. How do I continue as I seemingly have nothing to live for? I have terrific friends. The little work I still do gives me joy. I volunteer in my community. I have an accessible flat. I can still walk, still do meaningful things, recently I suggested a new piece of legislation thanks to a theatre project. This week I gave two interviews to mainstream media about private property renting. Potential. In all our forms…

9 things to quit for all Strong Men: 1. Caring about what others think 2. Not believing in yourself 3. Not experimenting different ideas / solutions for problems (life & business) 4. Not prioritizing your health 5. Wasting your precious time 6. Wanting something (instead write a plan and work towards it) 7. Chasing meaningless relationships 8. Wasting time by scrolling social media 9. Quitting addictions for good (if you have any - consider stopping it as it makes you mentally weak + affects your confidence and all other areas of your life!) 🚀 Take it easy and I hope you found one thing helpful in this list 💯☝

“Happiness is a quiescent state. It is not jittery. It is not trying to go anywhere or get anything. It is very still, so you have to become a little still to come into proximity to it. It is as if happiness is going five miles an hour and you are going a hundred miles an hour! Well, you passed it by!” _Wisdom from the Greater Community, Book 1 » Chapter 22: Escaping Suffering_ - by Marshal Vian Summers.

Comparison is also the giver of joy . Depends if you look up or down, short term happiness you look down , long term happiness you look up . Looking down is gratitude , looking up is envy and motivation, for happiness you need financial freedom, health and family values, if you have these 3 you are rich and happiness is then a very easy mindset to achieve.

Ryan, I've got a question on how stoicism deals with illness. Specifically how does stoicism help to push through a chronic illness? I've only been watching you for a few months, but looking back to my time against cancer back in 2001, I'm confident I dealt with it as a stoic would. I overcame the challenge, and moved forward. My wife being pregnant at the time, I needed to Be There for my son (and her). No one understood how I had the determination to push through as I did, but it was for them. However, I've come to find out that the treatments I received (specifically radiation therapy) have caused health issues coming in like a very slow tide over the last 20+ years. There are times I feel like I'm drowning in that in coming tide. I've had all the testing to confirm "I'm not gonna die from this" (i.e. no cardio-vascular issues), but BP and heart rate are out of control, not responding to medications as it's a baroreflex dysfunction or some other sort of dysautonomia. Despite mental fortitude, there are days where the body just WILL NOT do what I need it to do, and no amount of physical conditioning seems to help. This isn't a health issue that has an outlook of "getting better". Again, thi isn't something that is going to kill me, but it's more of dealing with what comes, even though "what comes" is involving stopping and sitting just to attempt a trip around the grocery store. None of this helps for any possible concept for a career goal (In fact, I'm filing for disability), hobbies (brain fog is an issue too with this), and like the grocery store, even daily tasks that have to be done. I glanced through your catalog of videos and only saw a couple videos on the pandemic and anxiety, but nothing on dealing with long-term or chronic illness. So, how would the stoics push through?

Virtue and being one with Nature are what matters in Stoicism. Living with virtue IS happiness. However, in order to remain virtuous, you change your perspective on things. For instance, Epictetus talks about never using possessive language for anything other then your mind as that's all you can control. You wouldn't say "my brother died", you say something like "a person who's related to me died.” Came from the Stoicism subreddit lol

I suggest that you invest in your own inner peace. Stop worrying about people, situations and things that are out of your control. We can’t control anyone or anything other than ourselves and our responses/ reactions to what life throws our way. We can’t stop what’s coming . Acceptance is a powerful key to happiness. Stay blessed!

Thank you sir! Posted the below a few days ago as a response to Ben and his great works here specifically ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/sIeVlJiwjKaWjdU&lc=UgxAgWhEEWNQrMEFmn54AaABAg ) and the decades he has been fighting the good fight (but i digress)... For what it is worth. Thank you so much sir! Somewhat relevant, ordered and am reading Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. Not any kind of substitute for your own religion but is helping get my head right. As well as (at the start a few months ago forcing it) finding any good thing at the moment, no matter how small (a hummingbird fighting it out with another out the window, back and forth) while there are a 100 "legitimate" reasons you could wallow in your own self pity by only seeing the bad. I struggle with this daily but have found it becomes more easy all the time and for me it is saying thank you Lord for those little things rather then Lord help me with my $hit. Take it for what it is worth but please know all that you are not alone. Oh and one more thing, please check up on your strong friends and family members. They may not be as strong as you think. God bless you all.
